Chapter One
The small tom blinked. He could see...
He looked around. He saw two other kits, a dark gray one, and a lighter gray one.
He tries to stand up, but immediately fell down. He looked around more.
Who am I? He thought to himself.
Suddenly he felt something move. He looked over his shoulder to see another cat sleeping next to him. She yawned.
"Oh, your eyes are open?" She looked at the kits.
"Hm, Stripefall?" Another tom entered the den they were all in.
"Yes, Foxclaw?" The tom responded.
"Their eyes are open... time to name them?" She asked.
The tom nodded. "I already have a few names in mind." He nudged the light gray kit. "This one, is Sootkit..."
The she-cat nodded as she pointed her tail at the dark kit. "This is Darkkit."
"Okay, what about this one...? Uh, Brackenkit?" Stripefall wanted to see if she liked it.
"Perfect." Foxclaw's neck stretched to touch noses with Stripefall.
He sat down. "This one is different..." He poked Brackenkit.
"Why should we worry?" They both watched as all the kits tried to stand up. Darkkit got up, no problem, shakily. Sootkit mewed as she stood up.
"Yes, different. I agree with you now. Always the last to do something. Last to get born, to open his eyes, to get to the milk, to get up." Foxclaw nodded her head as she watched the kit struggle to get up.
After a few tries, he got it, and they were all over the den.
"You three can go outside, now."
Brackenkit immediately padded outside, full of excitement. He saw cats all over the place. They were talking, telling stories, and some were just eating or sitting down. He watched the other cats go in and out of the camp. A warrior passed him and greeted him with a tail flick. Brackenkit got closer to the cats. At one point a warrior hissed at him.
It was night time, so Brackenkit was once again, the last to get back into the den to sleep.
"How was it?" asked Foxclaw.
"It was cool!" Darkkit replied excitedly.
"I agree!" Sootkit's blue eyes were shining with happiness.
"Okay, I guess," Brackenkit expected the place to be larger and have less cats inside, but that did not happen.
Foxclaw looked at Stripefall. Brackenkit watched Sootkit and Darkkit play with a moss ball. Stripefall nudged him farther.
Brackenkit just kept on watching until he stepped forward and asked if he was gonna be able to play.
"Can I play?" he asked the two kits. Sootkit stopped the ball and looked at Darkkit. Darkkit was waving his small tail.
"Sorry, we were just about to end there. Maybe you can play with us tomorrow?" Sootkit lied. Brackenkit's eyes brightened.
"Of course! Well, thanks...!" Brackenkit moved over to Stripefall. The other two kits, Sootkit and Darkkit, moved over the Foxclaw. She nudged them closer and Stripefall just moved Brackenkit over to Foxclaw.
"Mom, why do they hate me?" he asked her.
Foxclaw looked down at him. "You're a runt, you're behind, but don't worry..."
Foxclaw nudged him even closer. Brackenkit stared at the other two kits. They were already asleep. Stripefall nodded and walked out to his den. Brackenkit slowly let his eyes close.
He saw two cats, rather large, one was dark gray and one was a lighter gray.
"You're useless!" hissed the dark one.
The other stepped foward. "You pathetic excuse for a cat!"
The dark one grabbed the kit and quickly scraped him down the stomach, Brackenkit screeched in pain.
The dark one grinned and the lighter gray one smirked as he saw him try to kill the kit.
The lighter gray cat pounce onto him and scratched his neck deeply. Bracken suddenly woke up in his den. He looked down and saw that he was still bleeding. He gasped as he got up and looked at the two other kits. Darkkit had a grin. Sootkit had a smirk.
His eyes widened. "They wouldn't do that, would they?" He crawled closer to Foxclaw and whispered.
"Help me, mom!" Foxclaw quickly woke up and grabbed the kit by the scruff. She carried him to the medicine cat den.
In the medicine cat den, Honeyfur grabbed a few herbs. She used the juice of marigold on his wounds, and covered them up with cobweb to let them soak in the blood.
"How did this happen, little kit?" Honeyfur asked the kit as she pressed the cobweb up to his scratches.
"I was attacked, by Sootkit and Darkkit, when they were older, in a dream. They were grinning and smirking... I woke up and found Sootkit and Darkkit grinning and smirking, as they were sleeping. The cats looked exactly the same too...!"
Honeyfur's eyes narrowed. She stared at his mother for a minute. "Well... What do you think?"
Foxclaw didn't reply for a minute. "Well, honestly, as long as he's taken care of... I'm fine with it!"
The medicine cat gave poppy seeds to the small kit. "Just eat these," she instructed the kit. She stared as she watched him slowly eat them.
"Am I okay? Is this a dream?" Brackenkit looked around in confusion.
"You're fine, stop moving around. You're sleeping here for the night," she told him. "Go head out, Foxclaw. Keep an eye on those two kits!"
They both watched Foxclaw leave and Brackenkit looked down.
"You're fine... don't worry. You become an apprentice in one sunrise now. Look, it's already climbing sun out there." She pointed to the light peeking into the den with her tail.
"Honeyfur... why did they attack me?" he asked Honeypelt in confusion.
"Well, you're a runt, and not many cats like runts, sorry. But get some sleep!"
The kit closed his eyes. He soon found himself back with Stripefall, trying some apprentice moves with him. He woke up rather soon, cause a large hole in the den showed the bright light and he got up. He walked outside to the clearing.
"Hopefully this is a better day..." Brackenkit looked around. A few cats were already out, along with Stripefall.
Many cats were soon out, including Foxclaw, the two other kits, and Honeyfur.
He saw a brownish ginger pelt that stood out of all the cats.
Yep, it was Pinestar.
