Chapter 4- Ambush

Nothing exciting came after that. Scar, Bark and Cream were no longer kits. But Jaws would make speeches of glory, of the Clan cats blood staining their claws.

"I want to attack a Clan cat," Scar had growled to Jaws the previous day.

Jaws had shaken his head but he added that Scar could fight the other rogues if he wanted to.

Scar glanced at Bark. He was unusually quiet and had a thoughtful look on his face. "Bark, is there anything wrong?" Scar asked.

Bark shook his head. "I'm just... thinking," he replied, facing him for a moment before turning away.

Cream had just returned from a hunting trip with a few other rogues but judging from her looks, she had not caught enough prey.

"Rogues!" Jaws' call startled Scar slightly. "Gather now!"

Scar raced to the front. He was always eager to listen to what Jaws have to say. Bark nearly crashed into Caw, who gave him a death glare.

Scar remembered that day. Although Bark had injured Caw greatly, Caw had survived; however he was not as strong as he used to be. Therefore, Night became Jaws' second-in-command.

"Rogues!" Jaws yowled. "I sense your impatience to destroy the Clan cats! But soon, the blood of the Clan cats would stain on our claws! Selected cats will ambush - individually or in twos - one of the Clan cats' territories!"

The rogues yowled in approval and hunger. Scar joined them, wondering if he would be chosen.

"Now, I shall chose the cats," Jaws' eyes gleamed. "Night, you come with me. Bark and Scar, go to the Clan territory known as 'ShadowClan'. Take the tunnel under that stinky Twoleg road. And..."

As Jaws continued, Scar was excited. "Are you ready Bark?" he asked his friend, who nodded.

"Go now!" Jaws yowled. "Strike uncertainty in the Clans!"

Scar and Bark ran out of the rogues' camp.

"We are here," Bark announced. Scar couldn't tell whether Bark was eager or not, but at least he knew that Bark woukd fight the Clan cats if he was in trouble.

"We need to find a patrol," Scar mewed. "Then we strike them so fast that they can't determine us from the other Clan cats!"

"Good idea," Bark mewed.

They disguised their scent with mud, like they have done so as kits. Soon, Scar spotted a Clan patrol.

"Ready?" he whispered, quivering with readiness to attack.

"Yes," Bark replied tensely.

"Go!" he yowled, pouncing onto the nearest cat.

It was a small one, probably what the Clan cats call an 'apprentice'. Scar's eyes gleamed with anger and rage as he clawed the small cat mercilessly.

Bark was fighting two Clan warriors, and Scar was impressed with his friend's quick and accurate moves.

"Littlepaw, get help!" one of them yowled to the cat Scar was fighting.

"Not so fast," Scar snarled, pinning the small cat under his claws.

Littlepaw's blue eyes stared at his own amber ones, and surprisingly, Scar felt a rush of pity.

Littlepaw used Scar's hesitation to his own advantage and ran off.

"Bark!" he called out urgently. "We have to go!"

Bark bit on a Clan cat's pelt one last time before they fleed into the shadows.

~~~~
"Congrats," Jaws mewed. "Both of you did well. Especially you, Bark. I'm sure the two Clan warriors would remember your attack on them. And Scar, the cat will certainly be scared stiff every time he sees you."
"Thank you," Scar mewed happily. For once, Bark's eyes were gleaming with satisfaction, as if he had finally shared Scar's beliefs of the Clan cats.
"Tonight, we shall celebrate!" Jaws yowled. "The Clans will fall!"
The rogues yowled in triumph and Scar joined them.
Soon, I will finally avenge my mother's death.
