Thanksgiving- Collie and Misha
“Misha! Misha, something is burning!” I called.
Misha hurried out of our room and into the kitchen area of the apartment. He pulled the microwave open and waved away at smoke frantically.
“Collie! You could’ve taken it out of the microwave!” he whined.
“You told me not to touch anything,” I reminded him.
“True. It probably would’ve burst into flame the second you touched it,” he said, throwing whatever “it” was into the garbage.
“Thanks,” I said with a pout. Though it was true. I had very, very bad luck with cooking. I tended to Mary Winchester everything that I made. But, hey, who doesn’t like their turkey to be flaming?
“Well, the good news is that everything else came out right,” Misha said proudly. Unlike me, Misha was a very talented cook.
We had decided to have Thanksgiving at our apartment this year to celebrate our first one living together. Misha had been hard at work with food ever since yesterday. I had cleaned the entire apartment and helped with some of the desserts.
“They’ll be here soon. Are you ready?” he asked, pulling the turkey out of the oven and setting it on the table.
“Yep,” I said.
He hesitated before coming over and pulling me into his arms. “Are you okay?” he asked quietly. “I know this is your first Thanksgiving without your family.”
“I’m fine Misha. I don’t need them. I have you,” I said.
“Normally I’m the one who’s being cheesy,” he teased.
“Oh, shut up you dork,” I said and kissed him.
I had invited my parents and brother to come to our apartment for Thanksgiving. My mom had sobbed over the phone, begging me to come home and celebrate with them. Begging me to get away from my faggot of a boyfriend. I had firmly told her that if they wouldn’t come to our apartment, they wouldn’t see me.
I had then called Colin and told him he could come up later if he wanted. He promised he would, and proceeded to tell me that our charming parents had banned him from going to Ant’s house for Thanksgiving.
There was a knock on our door and Misha brightened up. He went over and pulled the door open, instantly engulfed in a hug from his little sister.
“Happy Thanksgiving!” Emma said.
“Happy Thanksgiving Em,” he said, hugging her back.
I watched, fighting down my jealousy as his parents hugged him and kissed his cheek. They smiled at him, love in their eyes. They loved their son. They accepted him.
“Happy Thanksgiving Collier!” Mrs. Redner said, coming over and surprising me by pulling me into a tight hug.
“Uh…happy Thanksgiving Mrs. Redner,” I said, hugging her back.
“I’m starving. Let’s eat! Unless Collie cooked. Then let’s order pizza,” Emma said, sitting at the table.
“I cooked,” Misha assured her, laughing.
I rolled my eyes but helped Misha set the food down on the table. We all sat down and passed the food around, filling our plates.
“Before we eat, we’re all going to say what we’re thankful for,” Mrs. Redner said sternly, smacking Misha’s hand when he reached for his fork. She turned to Emma. “You start, Emma.”
“I’m thankful that Collie didn’t cook,” she said. I shot her a glare and she laughed. “I’m just messing with you Collie. Well, kind of. But I guess…I’m thankful for my family. Even if my brother is the biggest dork in the world, and even if dad always eats all the Oreos.”
“I’m thankful that my wife keeps buying more Oreos. And of course I’m thankful for you two monsters,” Mr. Redner said, tugging on Emma’s hair playfully.
“I’m thankful that we’ve added Collie to our family, and that I have all of you,” Mrs. Redner said with a smile.
Misha looked at me and smiled softly. “I’m thankful for my family, because you guys love and accept me. And I’m so thankful for you, Collier. You make me happy, and you’ve given up so much for me. You chose me over your family. I love you with my whole heart. I know things are hard for you, but I’m always here for you and you’re always here for me.”
I looked at him, fighting back against my emotions. “I…Thank you. All of you,” I managed, afraid that if I tried to speak any more, I might turn into a blubbering mess.
Misha put his arm around me and pulled me close. “I love you.”
I smiled weakly at him and grabbed my fork. “Let’s eat.”
After about three hours of eating and talking with everyone, there was a knock on the door. I got up, knowing it was Colin.
I pulled the door open and Colin grinned at me. He pulled me into his arms, hugging me tightly.
“Happy Thanksgiving little brother,” he said.
“I’m younger by, like, ten minutes. Get over yourself,” I said, flicking him in the forehead.
He followed me into the apartment, greeting the Redners and hugging Emma. He grabbed a slice of pie and sat down with us.
“I can’t stay long. I’m sneaking over to Ant’s house. He told me to tell you happy Thanksgiving,” he said.
“What does he do?” I asked curiously.
“His family comes to his house. I think it’s a hard holiday for him and his mom,” he said with a shrug.
He may not have a dad, but at least he had a mom. At least he had one parent who loved him and was there for him.
I shook my head. No, I had to stop thinking like that. It was done and over with. I had made my decision and I stuck by it. I would pick Misha over them every time.
Misha, seeming to sense my sinking mood, put his arm around me and kissed my cheek. “Come with me,” he said, pulling me to my feet. “We’ll be right back,” he said to everyone.
He pulled me into our bedroom. “Are you okay?” he asked in concern.
“I…I am okay, Misha,” I said honestly. “I’m okay because I have you and your family. I have my brother. You all love me, and that makes me happy. I love you. I’m thankful for you, Misha.” Blushing at how cliché I sounded, I rested my head on his chest, wrapping my arms around his waist. “I’m so thankful for you.”
He put his arms around me and rocked together in silence. I did have a family. I had the Redners. They cared about me. They accepted me. And I had Colin and Misha. What more could I possibly want?
A small smile came to my face. I really was happy.
