Halloween- Will and Ethan

“You’ve never been through a maze before?” Benji asked in surprise as we sat in the car.

I shook my head. “Nah. I mean, my dad took me through a maze once when I was five, but I don’t think it counts.”

“Well, you’re in for a surprise,” Sonnet said, snickering. “Haunted mazes are the best.”

I sighed. “With my luck, I’ll get separated from all of you and get murdered.”

“No one gets separated! Well, except for Sonnet,” Will said.

“Shut up fatass,” Sonnet said. “I bet you can’t even run with all that candy you eat weighing you down.”

Will pulled into a parking lot, ignoring Sonnet. We all got out of the car and I followed them into a little place. Will paid for my ticket and they stamped my hand, waving me on through with the rest of our group.

“Try not to let anyone get separated on their own,” Gideon said nervously as we walked outside.

I looked at the giant maze in shock. Apparently, Will, Sonnet, Benji, and Gideon came here each year a few days before Halloween. How the hell they had never gotten lost in there, I would never know.

“No one jumps out at you in here,” Will explained. “But there are people waiting in the corners of the dead ends. That’s the only time anyone jumps at you, and they’re not allowed to touch you. There’s a guy in the middle there.” He pointed, where I could make out a tall platform at the center of the maze, a man sitting at the top. “If you get hopelessly lost, sometime they’ll direct you. If you absolutely need to get out, get that guy’s attention and he’ll get you an escort out.”

“So, what are we trying to find?” I asked, looking down at the paper they had handed me when Will bought our tickets.

“There are stamps at certain parts in the map. Get all the stamps and you get some free stuff,” Will said. “So you have to find the stamps, and then find your way out. Everyone have a flashlight?”

We all held up our mini flashlights. Will nodded and the five of us entered the maze. I looked around at the tall stalks surrounding us as we walked.

“Oh, right, I forgot. There are three guys in here called the Crawlers. They’re kind of like zombie things that chase after you, sometimes they yell at you when they do it. They can’t touch you, but they will get right up to your legs screaming, so most people run away. Sometimes you’re unlucky enough to have all three chase you, but usually it’s just one or two,” Will said.

“Benji and I got separated from everyone last year and two of them came after us,” Gideon said.

“It was horrible,” Benji groaned, stepping closer to Gideon and grabbing his hand. “They cut through the maze to sneak up on people.”

                “Joy,” I grumbled.

We found a stamp without incident after a few minutes. We were all shining our flashlights around, peeking around corners and trying to watch out for the Crawlers.

We turned a corner and all yelled as a bloody clown jumped out at us with a butcher knife. Will yanked me back since I was the closest to it. The clown moved towards us with his knife and we all turned and fled, winding through the maze until we were a safe distance away.

“Imagine if that was in the maze runner,” I said, trying to catch my breath.

“Well, you’re certainly no Thomas of Minho,” Will said as he waited for me to catch my breath.

“Guys,” Sonnet said, and her voice was a little shaky. “Um…we have company.”

We all turned and saw I groaned as I saw three zombies on the ground crawling towards us slowly. They weren’t too intimidating.

That is, until they all let out high pitched screeches and gained speed, crawling right at us.

I knew they couldn’t touch us, but it was still terrifying as they neared us. We all yelped and ran desperately as they gained on us, still screaming.

Benji and Gideon turned off one way, and one of the Crawlers followed them. Will and Sonnet were faster than me, and I tried to force my little legs to keep up as they turned a corner. I turned the same corner and groaned again.

“Shit,” I hissed, looking between the two sharp turns, having no idea which way the Duvet siblings had run. “This is how I die. I am the white girl in the horror movie.” I took a right and ran as fast as I could, until I thought I was safe.

I shone my flashlight around, trying to see if Will or my friends were nearby. But I was completely alone.

“Great. I’m totally the white girl who just got laid. Jason and Michael are on their way as we speak,” I mumbled, trying to remember which way I had come from. Maybe one of my friends would head back there to meet up. The fantastic thing about this maze was that there was no cell phone service, so I was totally screwed.

To make matters even better, my flashlight flickered out. I smacked it a few times and tried to turn it back on, but the stupid thing was as dead as I was going to be.

“Oh good, this will be in my obituary,” I said, stuffing the dead flashlight in my back pocket and wandering through the maze, hopelessly lost.

It was quiet except for the sound of my feet on the ground, occasionally snapping a twig or crunching a fallen stalk. There was no sign of my friends, or of anybody for that matter.

I heard a rustling and looked up, letting out a yell as someone launched out of the stalks at me. I stumbled backwards as they advanced, shoving me to the ground and standing over me, a hood covering their face.

But then they were shoved and fell to the side roughly. I looked up at Will, who pulled me to my feet and put an arm around me protectively.

“Drunken assholes,” he snarled, and I noticed that there were two other guys standing in the corn stalks, beer bottles in their hands. The guy on the ground grumbled out curse words.

“We’re just having fun!” he slurred.

“So am I,” Sonnet said, ripping off a growing head of corn and chucking it at the guy’s face. He yelped as it hit him.

Will pulled me away and Sonnet followed us. Once we were a safe distance away, Will hugged me.

“You slow idiot,” he said, scowling.

“Little legs,” I reminded, gesturing at them.

                “Are you alright?” he asked.

I nodded, though my heart was still slamming. I moved closer to Will, and he hugged me again, probably feeling my slight trembling.

“Let’s rest for a minute,” he said, sitting on the ground and pulling me into his lap. Sonnet sat next to us.

Will tilted my head and kissed me. “We’re not getting separated again!” he said sternly.

“No we are not,” I said, resting my head on his shoulder. “No more stupid haunted mazes full of stupid drunk people.”

He kissed me again. “Next year we can just go to a Halloween party.”

“We can roleplay. And by that I mean I’ll dress as a vampire and suck the life out of your dick,” I said.

“Wow, I could’ve lived my whole life without hearing someone say that to my brother,” Sonnet said.

“Shut up Sonnet, I like his idea,” Will said. He ran a hand through my hair comfortingly. “Sorry we got separated.”

“It was strangely fun, and it’ll make a good story someday,” I said, kissing him and smiling at him. He returned the smile and we stood up, holding hands and going off in search of the others with Sonnet.
