Halloween- Kory and Trace/Zeke and Tommy
“And this is Trace and Zeke when they were 6 years old. They were Todd and Copper from The Fox And The Hound that year,” Brandon said, pointing to a picture.
“AW!” I squealed. Trace was wearing Todd’s costume, and Zeke was wearing Copper’s. They were smiling at the camera happily, their arms around each other.
“Dad!” Trace said, coming into the room and glaring at his father. “Are you showing him pictures of me again?”
“You and Zeke,” Brandon said, flipping the page. “And this is Trace when he was 7 years old. He was the Mad Hatter that year!”
I looked at the picture and shock entered me. Trace was standing there, grinning at the camera. Brandon and a woman stood behind Trace, their hands on his shoulders.
It was the first time I had ever seen Trace’s mom.
She had a tight smile on her face and a serious look in her eyes. She looked like she would have rather been anywhere else but there. Brandon, on the other hand, looked genuinely happy to be out trick or treating with his young son.
Trace, however, seemed to remember that both of his parents had been in that picture. He stormed over, snatched the photo album out of Brandon’s hands, snapped it shut, and tossed it to the side.
“Get up. Let’s go,” he said to me, gripping my hand and pulling me to my feet.
Brandon shot Trace an apologetic look, which Trace promptly ignored. “Bye boys. Have fun at the haunted house,” he said.
“Bye,” Trace said, dragging me out of the room.
“Good luck with Kory in a haunted house,” mom said as we passed through the kitchen. “He’ll be jumping into your arms and screaming like a little girl every five seconds.”
“Mom!” I whined. “I will not!”
“Yes you will and you know it,” she said.
“I’ll handle it,” Trace said and pulled me out of the room.
“Oh, stop being such a grumpy gills!” I said as he unlocked the car.
We climbed in together and I rolled my eyes as he stayed silent. He pulled out of the driveway and took off towards Zeke’s house.
“Trace!” I said, poking his face.
“Kory, don’t annoy me,” he grumbled.
“It’s Halloween! Lighten up!” I said, smiling widely at him.
He sighed, pulling into Zeke’s driveway. I hooked up my iPod to the car and played Panic! At The Disco’s cover of This Is Halloween.
Zeke and Tommy came out of the front door and got in the back of the car. Zeke took off towards the haunted house we were going to.
“Nice music choice Corny,” Zeke said.
“Thank you!” I said.
“So, Tommy doesn’t think he’ll get scared in the haunted house,” Zeke said, grinning.
“Because I never do,” Tommy said with a shrug. “Haunted houses don’t freak me out.”
“You guys should have a bet!” I said. “Actually, I want a bet too, because yesterday Trace said he wasn’t going to get scared either!”
“Okay, if Trace and Tommy get scared, they have to put on dresses for the rest of the night when we get back, and sit outside passing out candy,” Zeke challenged.
“And if we don’t get scared, you and Kory have to put on dresses and pass out candy for the rest of the night,” Tommy said.
“Deal,” Trace said. He glanced at me. “I hope you’re ready for this, princess.”
I reached over and pinched his cheeks. “I think role playing will be good for our relationship.”
Tommy and Zeke snickered as Trace pouted. He smacked my hand away from his cheek and shook his head.
“Not happening. And could the idiots in front of us go any slower?” he grumbled.
He let out a sigh of relief as the car pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex. We kept driving until we reached the haunted house, and got out of the car.
“If you get scared, just let me know little lady,” Zeke said, winking at his boyfriend.
“I can’t wait to see you in a dress. I’ll call my brothers to come,” Tommy said, grinning at Zeke.
We bought our tickets and got in the fairly short line. It was late, and a lot of people had already gone through the haunted house. We had planned it this way on purpose.
“Excuse me, but where did you guys get the tickets?” a girl asked, coming up to us.
“Over there at the booth on the right,” Trace said, pointing.
“Okay, thanks! Alek, come on, the tickets are over there!” the girl said, bounding away to her friend.
“Morons,” Trace said once they were gone. “There’s a damn sign that says tickets.”
“Be nice mister!” I said, hitting him in the arm as the line moved forward.
After a few minutes, the doors opened and we were ushered inside. I gripped Trace’s hand, hoping that I could be even braver than him. I just didn’t like scary things…
“Are you ready?” the creepy maid lady asked, pulling aside a curtain. “Then step through. Just don’t expect to come back.”
“I’m a brave boy, I’m a brave boy, I’m a brave boy,” I whispered to myself as we stepped through the curtain into what looked like a funeral parlor.
“You’re pathetic,” Trace said to me, kissing my cheek and squeezing my hand.
“This is going to be entertaining,” Tommy said.
Someone crawled out from under a coffin resting on a table, and I shrieked and jumped into Trace’s arms. I yelled again as people began to get up from chairs and stagger towards.
“SAVE ME TRACE!” I cried, wrapping my arms around his neck.
He sighed and calmly carried me away from the people staggering after us. He set me down and pushed me through a door at the end of the room.
“This is so boring,” Tommy said as a headless man leapt out at us, brandishing a bloody axe.
“I hate haunted houses, shut up Tommy!” I cried in terror, ducking behind Trace.
Trace pulled me forwards. “They can’t touch you, Kory. You have to remember that these are just people volunteering,” he said in annoyance. “Stop overreacting.”
“It’s not just him,” Tommy said. “Zeke is shaking.”
“Shut up Tommy!” Zeke said, blushing. “You know I hate when things jump out!”
Zeke and I both let out screams as we entered the next room and immediately had a girl crawl at us from behind the door. I jumped back into Trace’s arms in terror.
“HAVE A GROWTH SPURT SO I CAN JUMP INTO YOUR ARMS!” Zeke snapped, punching Tommy in the shoulder.
“It’s not even scary!” Tommy said, rolling his cool gurple eyes.
We worked our way through the rest of the house, me and Zeke screaming in terror. Although I had to admit, I might have been screaming a little more than Zeke…
Finally, we entered the very last room of the house. I was absolutely clinging to my boyfriend. He was holding me close, protectively pulling me away as things jumped out and crawled at me.
“See? There’s the exit. Not so bad,” Trace soothed. He had started taking pity on me when I nearly fainted in the basement after being attacked by a horde of zombies and a creepy little girl with a blood-covered knife.
“HOLY SHIT!”
I jumped in surprise and we whirled around. Tommy had backed against Zeke, and Zeke was holding him, trying not to laugh.
“Stop laughing! That’s a real spider!” Tommy said, punching Zeke in the arm.
I looked over and paled, realizing that there was indeed a live, large spider crawling up the wall that Tommy had been walking near. Tommy was staring at it in terror.
“That spider just put you in a dress, Tommy,” Trace said, laughing.
He spun around to leave and let out a yell as he almost ran into a boy with a blood-covered face and a stitched up mouth. He backed up, accidentally pulling me with him.
“Did you just get scared?!” I cried, ignoring my own racing heart.
Trace let out a groan. “I didn’t hear anyone sneak up behind me. Fuck! Damn you,” Trace snarled at the guy, pulling me out of the exit angrily. Zeke and Tommy hurried after us.
“WE WON! WE WON! WE WON!” Zeke and I cheered, jumping up and down together.
“Oh shut up,” Trace and Tommy grumbled at the same time.
“It’s definitely going to be an interesting night,” I said, winking and kissing Trace.
He glared at me and I burst into laughter as I imagined him in a dress for the rest of the night. Yes, it was definitely going to be an interesting night…
