Father's Day- Swan Song

A.N.- Okay, Jasper won the favorite dad contest thing! But I also wrote several other father's day specials, which I'll probably just put up as a mass post. But I decided to have this one separate. So, enjoy Jasper Marion being cute with Mitch and Shane :D

                “Daddy!”

Jasper Marion forced his eyes open. “Oh god,” he moaned as his bedroom door was flung open. “They found me.”

“Of course they found you,” his wife, Carol said.

“Daddy!” 5 year old Mitch cried, running over to the bed and trying to crawl onto it.

Jasper leaned over and lifted the little boy onto the bed. He gestured at 7 year old Shane to get on the bed as well.

Shane crawled on and smiled at his dad. “Happy father’s day dad!” he said, flinging his arms around Jasper’s neck.

“Thank you,” Jasper said, hugging him back. He pulled away and stared at Shane. It had been 7 years, and he still couldn’t believe he was a dad sometimes. He imagined little Jace Butler, probably crying at the thought of his father, and wondered how any person who was coward enough to leave their child could possibly be called a man. He couldn’t imagine life without his sons.

“Happy father’s day,” Mitch said, climbing into Jasper’s lap and smiling up at him.

Jasper laughed at the strange crooked smile Mitch had always had. “Thank you Mitchy,” he said, ruffling Mitch’s hair.

“The boys went out and handpicked worms like the disgust males they are just so they could take you fishing today,” Carol said.

                “Is that so?” Jasper asked.

“Yea daddy! We got worms from the front yard this morning!” Mitch said eagerly.

“I got the biggest one!” Shane said.

                “Nu-uh! I did!” Mitch argued.

“Hey! Don’t argue. It’s daddy’s day and he doesn’t want you to argue,” Carol said sternly.

“Sorry daddy,” the boys said, peeking up at their father.

“Don’t fight today,” Jasper said, putting an arm around Mitch and the other around Shane. He smiled at them, touched that they had gone to so much trouble just so he could go fishing today. “You guys are fishing with me right? I can’t go fishing without some big strong men to help me reel in the big catch!”

“Of course!” Shane said, flexing his little muscles. “We’ll help you catch the biggest fish! Right Mitchy?”

“Right!” Mitch agreed with a nod, giggling.

“Then let’s go fishing!” Jasper said happily.

                                                                                                ***

It had been 13 years since then, and now Jasper sleepily walked out to the living room. Shane was lying on the couch, lazily flipping through TV channels.

He looked up, noticing his dad. “Happy father’s day!”

“Thanks. Where’s your brother?” Jasper asked, stretching.

“Probably still sleeping,” Shane said with a shrug.

Jasper shook his head. “That boy needs to get help with his sleeping problems.”

“No I don’t. I’m awake,” Mitch growled, stumbling out to the living room. He yawned and rubbed his eyes. “Oh, right. Happy father’s day.”

“I appreciate the enthusiasm,” Jasper said.

Shane pushed himself off of the couch. “Mitch, wake up.”

                “I’m awake,” Mitch whined.

“Barely. I mean really wake up,” he said, snapping in Mitch’s face.

Mitch slapped his hand away. “I am not afraid to rip your fingers off one by one, you asshole.”

“Don’t fight on father’s day!” Carol’s voice floated out from the kitchen.

“Shut up!” Mitch said and shoved Shane’s hand away as he began to snap again.

“Don’t tell your mother to shut up you rude bastard,” Jasper said, smacking Mitch in the back of the head with a sigh. Oh, how he missed the days of the boys’ innocence.

“Ow, don’t hit me!” Mitch said.

“I can do what I want. I’m your father, and it’s father’s day,” Jasper pointed out.

“Shane, go light his gift on fire,” Mitch said.

“Quit being an ass,” Shane said, grabbing Mitch’s arm and yanking him into the kitchen.

Jasper followed after them and froze when he entered the kitchen. He eyes widened in surprise.

“Brand new fishing poles for each of us,” Shane said, gesturing at the nice fishing poles propped up against the counter.

“And we went out and handpicked worms. Which was gross, by the way,” Mitch said, holding up a container and pulling the lid off so Jasper could see the worms inside.

“Hope you’re ready for a day of fishing down at the lake, old man,” Shane said with a grin.

“It’s tradition. We just figured it was time we got new fishing poles for everyone since ours are probably hand me downs from the damn dinosaurs,” Mitch said.

Jasper held his arms out and gestured at the boys. Shane moved forward and Mitch hesitated before following. Jasper hugged them each individually, tightly.

“I love you guys,” he said, pulling them both into his arms. They were rude little bastards, but they were good kids and he loved them with his whole heart.

“I love you too,” Shane said.

“Ditto,” Mitch said, but he gave his dad an honest smile, still crooked as it had been 13 years ago.

“Happy father’s day,” the boys said, hugging Jasper.
