Unconventional
Will wasn't exactly sure when a switch had suddenly flipped on in his head and he'd thought to himself, My life would be a living Hell without Nico in it. Maybe it was when he woke up to Nico for the billionth time and realized that mornings just wouldn't be the same without him, or maybe it was when Nico slid into the room with messy hair, wearing nothing but an old t-shirt, boxers, and a pair of knee-high socks, clutching a spoon like a microphone and belting the lyrics to "Love Me Like You Do" and Will decided that he was the biggest dork on the planet, or something as every day as Nico smiling at him over a bowl of cereal like he'd put the stars in the sky that made Will realize that this wasn't something he could take for granted. Maybe it was simply a suggestion at the back of his mind all along, and so when it finally found its way to the forefront, Will wasn't that surprised.
He did know that now that he'd bought the ring and had it hidden on the top shelf of their closet where Nico couldn't reach, it had been sitting up there for so long that it was probably collecting dust. He'd spent weeks, maybe even months, worrying about it, staring at Nico, the guy he loved more than absolutely anything, and tried desperately to decide what would wow him the most because he wanted his proposal to be perfect.
And now, for some reason, this seemed to be the perfect night to do it even though they were just casually hanging out in their apartment, lounging on their ugly couch, Nico's legs slung over his lap as they watched Groundhog Day. Neither of them were even wearing pants and Will was elbow deep in a bowl of popcorn when he glanced over at his boyfriend and found that Nico was already looking at him with the most beautiful smile he'd ever seen, the plastic spoon he'd been using to scoop peanut butter from the jar was stuck firmly between his teeth and his eyes were sparkling mischievously. Something in Will's head sent a thought sparking to life, If I don't do it now, I might never have the courage.
He couldn't live with the idea of never even taking the chance, so he said something about going to get ice cream and gently maneuvered himself out from under Nico's legs before running into the kitchen as fast as he could without seeming suspicious. Once there, he immediately crossed through and out the other door leading into the hallway so that he could make a quick stop in their bedroom to retrieve the little black box from its hiding place.
He actually did get them ice cream, two bowls of Nico's favorite: cookies 'n' cream, except at the bottom of one bowl was the ring, a black zirconium band with delicate silver inlays and a strip of small diamonds crossing it diagonally. Will had saved up for months before going and carefully choosing it and now it was doused thoroughly in a huge sticky mess of ice cream.
His hands were shaking when he entered the room and there was a moment of sickening dread when he handed Nico his bowl because he was worrying himself sick over three things in particular: if the timing was right, the horrible possibility that Nico would say no, and whether he'd given him the right dish.
Nico was utterly oblivious to the tirade of thought and emotion inside Will as he thanked him and snuggled into his side once his boyfriend had settled down, his bowl nestled safely in his lap.
Will watched him nervously out of the corner of his eye as Bill Murray flirted with Andie McDowell on screen. Nico was taking devastatingly tiny bites and Will wanted to reach over, dig the rig out, and just get this over with. His heart was pounding hard and fast and he hadn't even touched his own ice cream.
He was so focused on worrying that he didn't notice when Nico was nearing the bottom of his bowl until a little gasp sounded beside him and Will glanced over to find Nico holding the ring with eyes as wide as dinner plates. His eyes fled upwards to meet Will's, questions swarming through his expression and mouth open in wonder. "Will..."
Will took both of their bowls and set them aside, worming out from beneath Nico at the same time so he could get down on one knee in front of him. Words escaped them both for a few moments.
"Look, I know this probably isn't how you imagined this would be, but I don't think-" he was cut off by Nico dropping to the ground in front of him and pulling their lips together. "Save the speech for our wedding vows, Solace," he muttered, and Will grinned. Nico always had been the more straightforward of the two.
