Personified Trees

(Emma's POV)

"EMMA!" David yelled, running into the playroom.

"What?" I asked.

"There's a letter for youuuu," he sang. "Want me to read it for you?"

"Sure!" I chirped. The letter had little hearts and stars doodled across it, like freckles. It reminded me of my two freckles on my wrist. They were the same size, and they were close enough that it looked like they were kissing. I used to pretend they were my parents, and I'd have small conversations with them in the evening. It's slowly faded out after I met Michael and Jeremy, though.

"'Dear Emma,'" he started. "'We would like to formally tell you that we have decided to adopt you! We now have the necessary funds we need and are preparing to welcome you to our family! We would also like to let you know that you will have an older brother named Evan!! With love, Michael and Jeremy Heere!'"

By this point, I was grinning wider than I ever had before. David picked me up and raised me above him.

"This is so exciting!" he said to me. I nodded back happily.

David set me down and ran off, probably to tell his coworkers.

I waddled over to the letter to look at the doodles. Some of the stars had one more point than the others.

Then, I noticed there was a small drawing inside. I took it out to get a better look.

It featured Michael and Jeremy across from each other. I was drawn in my favorite purple sweatshirt on Jeremy's back, and Michael did the same for a slightly bigger boy who also had blonde hair, though his was a bit darker than mine. The boy and I both held sticks, and it looked like we were play-fighting. I flipped the paper over to see if there was any side. There was, but I couldn't read what it said.

"David!!" I called.

"Yes?" he answered, extending the "y".

"Can you read this for me?"

"Of course!" I handed him the picture.

"'Drawn by Michael Heere. Not Jeremy Heere. I draw real people, not personified trees.' 'You said it was cute!' 'I mean, it WAS, then I finished MY picture, and it was superior.' 'Whatever. We love you, Emma, please enjoy this picture that doesn't feature trees.' 'Fine! I'll add a tree.'" He gave the picture back to me and I thanked him.

I looked around for where he could have put the tree. The background simply showed a blue sky and green grass, along with a sun with a smiley face.

I finally found the tree after a good five minutes. It was growing off of Jeremy's butt.
