Chapter Nineteen

PoV: Kaylee

As we walked back towards David, I felt very uncertain. Am I doing the right thing? Is Julia right, and he's actually here to kill her? I fretted, but at the same time, I was quite certain I was right. Or maybe I just really wanted to be right because that meant I was actually meeting Jason Bourne.

He was leaning against a tree, hood up, looking generally like someone you'd want to leave to do their own thing. As we approached though, he stood up, facing us both, looking nervous. I wondered if that was because of me snapping at him before I left, bluntly telling him that he handled the situation poorly and that he needed to stop chasing Julia, as she is scared silly of him. He'd been somewhat confused about that, so I filled him in with what she'd told me about Jason Bourne, and what I'd inferred she had been told herself by crazy secret agent type people.

Julia, on the other hand, was looking determined. She seemed intent on getting her answers, and I hoped that would stop her from lashing out at him again.

"Hello again," I said to David, not bothering to hide my exasperation, "Julia has agreed to..." I trailed off, looking over at her, "What did you agree to?"

"I agree to work with you until I have the answers I need about my past. After that, I will re-evaluate, and we can decide where to go from there," she was speaking very crisply, and her gaze only just avoided looking like a glare, "For now, we will head towards Alberta, and then onto Castle HQ, where we shall speak to my handler, outside of headquarters, to be clear, and then see where we stand. If you are lying, and we find that this David Webb person isn't real, I hope you understand that you will never be leaving this country again."

He nodded slowly, "I understand. I am able to prove who I am, as well as who I have been. I would need to call some people to prove it, however."

"We will deal with that later," She replied, "Come, let's get in our car before the RCMP catch us with a wanted man."

We walked quickly back towards the car, and I ended up in the lead, as Julia subtly managed to always stay behind David.

He didn't seem interested in leading, which made me wonder how long he'd been following us, and if he even knew where we parked.

Once we got back to the car, Julia gestured for me to drive before she slipped in back with David. As I got the car into drive I looked back at her, "Where to?" I asked, deciding that ignoring David's presence was probably the best idea for me to limit the possibilities of fangirling in an uncomfortable manner. I'd always tried to understand that the actors were just people too, but now the honest to goodness Jason Bourne was in my car, and I had to contain my fangirl at all costs.

"We are going to head towards Alberta, so follow signs for Calgary," she ordered, "I'll probably have to give Noah a call and give him some explanation for what happened in downtown before Blackwood finds out through social media."

I nodded, and pulled out into the road, "So... what do you want us to call you? David? Jason? Where does Matt Damon fit into the story? Oh, and why do you hate him?" I decided that I needed some answers, and if Julia wasn't going to ask, I'd have to.

"David is fine," he answered, "And I don't actually hate Matt Damon. I just find that being compared to him can be very inconvenient so I tried to discourage that line of conversation."

"So, why do you look exactly like him?" I pressed, glancing back at him with the rearview mirror.

"It's complicated," he said, clearly reluctant to share.

I wasn't going to let him off that easily though, "Fine. Julia, how long is the drive?"

"About five hours," Julia eyed me suspiciously, and I got the feel she had a guess at where I was going.

"Five hours?" I repeated, clearly exaggerating my astonishment, "You know, David, I think you could probably explain your story in that time, and correct any misunderstandings we might develop. And also," I added in a quieter tone, "If you want to get Julia to trust you, you'll need to make the first move. I have seen it many times."

He sighed, looking uncertain. Suddenly his phone rang a tune that had a very romantic feel to it, despite the lack of lyrics. David closed his eyes, sighing again, but this time it seemed like he was disguising a groan in the sigh.

"I need to answer that, " he said, seeming uncomfortable.

Julia nodded, then added, "Put it on speakerphone. Kaylee, you need to be silent."

"I wish you didn't feel the need to target that comment at me, " I grumbled as David pulled out his phone, and accepted the call.

"Hello?" it was a feminine voice on the other end, "What's all that noise?"

"Hey Luce, yeah, I'm here," David replied, "I'm traveling right now, that's why it's so loud."

"Oh, okay. Does that mean you'll be back home soon? The kids and I miss you."

I started, realizing what I was hearing. I struggled to focus on the road, and not exchange any glances with Julia.

"I think so, but you know how suddenly this came up, I can't promise anything," he said, "But I'll be back as soon as I can."

A young girl's voice was heard quietly in the background, "Is that Daddy on the phone?"

The woman's voice went quieter, as she'd probably moved away from the phone, "Yes, it is. Do you want to say hello?"

A couple of seconds later the girl's voice came through at a normal volume, "Hi Daddy! Are you coming home soon?"

"I'll be back as soon as I can sweetie," David answered, and I looked at his face using the mirror again, and all I could see was the look of somebody talking to someone they loved and missed.

My brain was going crazy trying to decipher this new information, He has children! Jason Storming Bourne has children! And a partner, probably wife! Not named Marie. What is going on?

As I freaked out, David wrapped up his conversation with his daughter, then asked if he could, "Talk to Mommy again," and his voice was so sweet and gentle when he talked to the little girl, I was certain my heart was a going to be a puddle for a long time.

"Should I call the others down?" the woman he'd called Luce asked once she got the phone back, "Or could we do a call this evening?"

"I'm not sure what my evening plans are," David said slowly, "But I'll try to text you once I find out."

"All right," she said, "Anyways, are you doing okay? Your agent is getting annoyed at how I'm brushing them off when they try to contact you."

David paused, "Yeah, I'm okay. And thanks for keeping them entertained for me."

She laughed, "It's kind of fun. I'm so glad you are all right. Whenever anything crazy happens in the news I get so worried that you were involved!" She laughed again, "I'm sure you've been involved in more than I'd like."

I managed to adjust the mirror so I could slightly see Julia's face, and I saw a face void of emotion, which I had learned meant she was full on panicking.

"Look, sweetie, I have to go now," David said, "But I will do my very best to call you later, I promise."

"Okay Matt," she said, and my eyes widened, "I love you. Stay safe!"

"I will," he said, "And I love you too. Talk to you later!"

"Talk to you later, " she agreed, "Bye!"

He hung up, and the car was silent.

In the silence, I pulled the car over, parked it by the side of the road, then turned to look at Julia and David, who his wife knew as Matt.

Julia was still completely empty of emotion, so I broke the silence.

"David... why did she call you Matt?" I asked, pulling out my phone, hiding it from their view with the back of my seat.

"Is that honestly your first question?" Julia glared at me, then looked at David, her gaze steely, "Who was the agent you mentioned, and what is their purpose in your life?"

I finished my google search, and interrupted Julia, "Yes, that is my first question, and I think you should let me handle this, at least for a bit," I turned to David, "Was that woman's name..." I looked down at my phone obviously, "Luciana Barroso?

He sighed, "I should have expected the fangirl to figure things out faster, instead of the trained agent. Though you do seem pretty good at reading people, have you had any training for that sort of thing?"

He complimented me, he complimented me, oh sparks, oh sparks! I freaked out but managed to keep it contained by biting my lip as firmly as I dared. I waited a couple of seconds before speaking, "No, I haven't had any training. My role on this journey is fangirl, useless civilian, and sidekick to her," I nodded my head at Julia, who appeared to be hiding a glare.

"I see..." he seemed taken aback by my frankness.

"Anywho, how..." I sighed, then continued, "How is Jason Bourne and David Webb also Matt Damon? I mean, how does that even happen?"

"Tragedy and luck," he answered shortly, looking out the window.

"Well that's fantastic," Julia joined in the conversation, "Elaborate, now."

"I was looking for a new job, someone close to me suggested acting, I began looking into that career, then they died, so I decided to pursue that job as a tribute to them. I landed the Bourne role completely based on luck, and that launched my acting far higher than I would have ever expected."

I took a deep breath, turning back around to face forwards, "Julia, I need a moment. You can bombard him with questions if you'd like," Yet again, my mind was racing, trying to cope with the fact that I was in the same car as Matt Damon, and that Jason Bourne and Matt Damon were one and the same, and that somehow he thought that he was related to my adopted sister.

Julia was silent for a couple of moments before she spoke again, "How are you an actor who is popular in the USA without the CIA cracking down on you?"

"I have an agreement with them, they leave me and my family alone, and I leave them alone. Almost no one knows that Jason Bourne is not fictional, and I've found I prefer it that way," He explained, "They have made it so no one knows what Jason Bourne looked like, which means that Matt Damon's only connection to the world of spies is the people he's played."

"That's a nice arrangement," Julia nodded, "Can you prove it?"

"Would multiple pieces of ID satisfy you?" David asked.

Julia didn't answer his question, but instead said, "Show me what you have."

He nodded, "That will involve me going into my backpack, do you understand?"

"Of course I understand, do it," she snapped.

"Hey," I snapped back at her, "You might want to stop displaying how nervous you are."

She froze slightly, then nodded, saying nothing.

I realized that David, Matt, whoever he was, was watching our interaction very curiously, and I suddenly felt very uncomfortable.

"So, ID?" I prompted David pointedly.

"Right, let me get that," He reached into his bag, which he'd had between his legs for the drive.

Julia watched him carefully as he dug through his bag, especially as he pulled things out. He set them on the seat between them slowly and carefully, displaying them so Julia could see them without needing to touch them.

After a couple of seconds of looking at the pieces of ID, Julia groaned and leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes.

"Can you interpret that groan for me?" I asked tentatively.

"He's the real deal," She replied, her eyes still closed.

"He's the..." I took a deep breath, "Can I step outside for a moment?"

Julia opened her eyes, and met mine, frowning slightly.

I tried to communicate nonverbal that I needed somewhere to let my fangirling out without being a nuisance, and I think she got the gist of it.

"Yeah, but stay close," Julia answered, and I got out of the car as fast as I could, fumbling with the door handle in my hurry.

Once I was outside, I took a couple of steps away from the car, and rested my arms on the guardrail, looking into the valley between mountains.

Matt Damon is Jason Bourne. They are both in the car I am driving. My sister is a spy and possibly related to David Webb, Jason Bourne's normal side. I have left the country I have spent most of my life in to help my adopted sister, who isn't even properly adopted, escape that country and journey back to the country I was born in. In the last two days, I've been in a car chase, shot at, shot other people, brained a guy with my water bottle, and met Jason Bourne. This is completely insane.

And so, I did the only thing I could think of. I looked back at the car quickly, and seeing that Julia and David seemed to be busy talking, I wrapped my arms around myself like a hug, grinned hugely while still facing the valley, and yelled as loud as I dared, "Squeeeeeeeeee!"

After releasing my emotions to the world, I got back in the car and was surprised to see that Julia had tears in the corners of her eyes as she was talking to David.

"...thought I was worth all that?" she asked, glancing to the side quickly to wipe her eyes.

"I thought all of my biological family was dead," he said kindly, "When I heard that it was possible I had a niece, well, I had to find out."

"Okay, hold up," Julia held up a finger, stopping him from continuing, "Based on what you've told me, you took out a helicopter to get to me. And taking those out is hard."

He laughed, "I also accidentally made the United States think that Kaylee Boardman and Megan Jones are working with terrorists, so I think we are pretty even."

I spun to face him, "That was you? You were the one who-"

Julia tried to cut me off, "Kaylee, calm down!"

I continued anyway, "-made me a fugitive? In my own country?"

"Kaylee, you did that when you joined me in the car!" Julia snapped, "As soon as you joined me, you were marked. I tried to explain that, but no, you were too concerned for your little sister's safety! And then I've spent the last few days keeping you safe, and running at almost a jogging speed when we need to be sprinting! It's a minor miracle that we weren't caught before we crossed the border!"

"Girls, be quiet!" David yelled, and we both fell silent, "You two are tired of traveling together, and are therefore getting mad about nothing. Kaylee, you are old enough to know better. Julia, I'm pretty sure you've been trained to know better in some form or another. We still have four-plus hours of traveling to do, so let's get going."

We were silent for a couple of moments, then I broke the silence.

"You have an excellent yelly parent voice, David," I stated, my voice small.

"Thank you," his voice was back to a normal tone, "Can we get moving now?"

I nodded, "Yeah, sure, unless you have any issues, Julia?"

Julia was sitting still, staring ahead blankly. When I addressed her, she looked up sharply, then said, in a voice just louder than a mumble, "Yeah, let's get going," then went back to staring at the back of the seat in front her.
