Chapter 7:Alexander Lightwood

For some reason, Ragnor decided not to come to work today. Scratch that, I know exactly why he didn't come today. This morning a went over to his house and knocked loudly on his door, but he ignored me. When I barged in he just covered his face with a pillow and told me he wasn't feeling well. He then threw said pillow at me and told me to leave. I was sure he wasn't sick, he just needed a day off from being around me. After yesterday's incident, he got very upset. He called me a few choice words when we walked home, then rudely left.
Honestly Ragnor can be such a drama queen sometimes. Even more than me.
Sadly, halfway through the day I started to feel lonely. It was different without having Ragnor by my side yelling at me. There was nothing out here besides me and the merfolk, and they weren't very conversationalists. There was that one from yesterday, though, he was something to look at. If only he wasn't a Merman. I'd love to get to know him, but I do realize that more than likely will not be happening any time soon.
I made my way across the boat and stood at the edge. There was nothing around, and I was completely alone. I let out a breath. It was all very boring now. I was just waiting for when it was time for me to go home, but a few hours felt like decades now. I hated long days.
After a long day of standing around and doing hardly anything, I decided to rest next to the ocean. There's rocks leading a into the ocean a good distance from the shore. I usually sat here at night whenever I needed to calm down, but this time something caught my eye. There was a dark figure in the water make its way towards me. It was too small to be a shark or anything dangerous, so I wasn't worried. It neared, and I waited for whatever it was. It got close enough that I could see that it was the Merman again. He came out the water, and I looked for any injuries from yesterday. He looked okay, and I was glad he didn't get any major injuries. He didn't say anything at first. He just slowly neared towards me. I stayed silent, but kept my eyes on him. He was unarmed, but seemed to have more of those tattoos covering him today. Along with the tattoos, I can also see now that his skin is covered in small, sliver scars. Every inch of his skin was covered with either scars or tattoos. There was a specifically large one on his shoulder.
He kept nearing closer, and looking around. We were alone. Just his stance said a lot about him. He leaned in, but not too close. He kept his distance, but curiosity got the best of him. His eyes were bright and full of life, but they were never focused entirely on me. He was weary.

The boy looked like he'd seen too much in his short life, but then again not enough.
"Hello." He was terribly shy. "I just wanted to say thank you. For cutting me free. I know it's stupid and risky for me to come here, but- I don't know where I was going with this." There was a pause. "I'll be going now."
"Wait," I said immediately. "You came all the way here just to say that? Stay. I'm sure I'll make it worth your time." He looked uneasy. He was a second away from swimming away and not looking back, but he didn't. He stayed, and rested his arms on the rocks.
"I'll stay. My name is Alexander Lightwood, but everyone calls me Alec."
"So formal. I'm Magnus. Magnus Bane if you want to know." He looked me over, and I suddenly wished I had changed. My clothing was extremely dull and lifeless.
"Sorry, I'm just used to introducing myself by my full name. I thought everyone did that, and by everyone I mean humans too."
"It's just you. We don't really do that unless we're talking to someone really important. Other than that, it's just first name." He kept trying to avoid eye contact, but I made sure I had his attention. He was adorably shy. "Tell me more about yourself and others like you. Like what kind of Merperson are you?"
"You don't know?" Alec said it as if it was supposed to be common knowledge. He was about as confused as I was. I knew nothing, and he was confused as to why I knew so little. He must've figured I knew something, but clearly not. "I'm a Shadowhunter. We protect the kingdom of Idris from Demons and other things that would cause harm to anyone. We're also half Angel. Which makes us stronger and faster than other Merfolk." That explains the weapons and scars. Killing Demons can't be an easy thing to, and will eventually scar you.
"Interesting," I said as if I was actually interested in what actually he was saying and didn't just like listening to his voice. "What are those?" I pointed to the stark black tattoos etched on his pale skin. They were all in different shapes and sizes.
"They're called runes. They make us stronger, or faster, or can even make us fireproof. There's one for almost anything. Stamina, luck, and there's runes that are just for ceremonies like the wedding and love rune. There's also a rune called the Parabatai rune." He pointed to a rune on his his forearm. "It's a bond between warriors. My Parabatai is my adopted brother. You fight together and you're supposed to be closer than siblings. It's a very powerful bond."
"They look very nice on you." He blushed.
"Everyone has them."
"Yes but I like them on you." He was awestruck and didn't know what to say, so I changed the subject. "So according to you there's Angels and Demons, is there a heaven or hell?" I had to ask.
"I can't tell you if there's a heaven, or even Angels. We're supposed to be defendants of them, but no one has seen on in ages. But there definitely is a hell. It's at the bottom of the ocean. That why no one goes there, and if someone does, they don't come back." He touched the scar on his shoulder.
"Is that how you got that scar?"
"This? Yes and no. My sister and I wondered too close one day when we were on a hunt, and demons came out at us. One was going straight for her, and I got in its way so I took the blow instead of her." Pretty and caring. "I kept telling her to come back but she wouldn't listen. There's certain clicks we can make and usually they mean stuff like 'come back' and I'm safe' and you're supposed to listen to those no matter what, but she never did really listen. I didn't want her to get hurt so I ended up with this. It wasn't that bad compared to some situations my Patabatai has gotten us into." He laughed. "I also have a younger brother. He's only nine, so he can't hunt yet. Luckily. Imagine what he'd get into with my Parabatai. Am I boring you?" I was staring at him, so he must've thought I was losing interest. Quite the opposite actually.
"No, keep telling me about yourself."

That night I left with new information about Alec, and plans to meet with him tomorrow too.

I'm so sorry I'm so bad at getting my life together. Late but here so enjoy
