Chapter 3:Mermaids
"You have to admit. It's a good idea," Ragnor told me. We've been trying to come up with a way to make money so we can leave Indonesia. Ragnor wasn't the best at it as I'd come to learn. He even thought that calling up my ex's and asking them for money was a good idea. While Camille is loaded, no way I'm asking her for money. I wasn't that desperate.
"Ragnor, I'm not going into the Black market business so I can get out of here. While it sounds fun, it's also illegal."
"Magnus Bane, a little afraid to break the law." He rolled his eyes. "You come up with some ideas then." He sighed and went to go check on a net. I looked at the ocean. It wouldn't give me any ideas, but it was peaceful. The crystal blue waters only disturbed by us. Many fishermen didn't like going out this far because it can be dangerous, but Ragnor and I had to make ends meet. The catch out here was great. But the farther you went out the more likely you were to have an unfortunate encounter with a Madame White or a Blue Man of Minch. Nither of those were beings that I wanted to encounter. The Blue Men would sink my ship by conjuring up a storm, while the Madame White would just attack. But there's also the merfolk. After catching fish for a while here, you learn a few things by just watching. Like most Merfolk don't even attack. They're like us but with fish tails. Most Merfolk are distinguishable by their tails. They're usually colorful with a shimmer to them. Then there's others that are different, and I'm sure that they're an entirely different species. The other type of Merfolk I've noticed have completely black tails. They're usefully just swimming around, but they carry tridents and swords with them. If Ragnor and I stay where we are, they won't come near. I've only seen them in action once. A single Mermaid took down a Blue Man on her own while the other stood back and watched. I'm assuming their some kind of protectors or something like that. Who they're protecting, I'm not sure. It's either themselves, or us, but I doubt that it's us. They live on their own, making no contact with us. I guess even they need some kind of protection. No wonder they go for so much when you catch one. That's when it hit me like that Fossegrim did when I tripped over the little guy. "Ragnor. How about a mermaid? Think about it. If we can get our hands on one we can leave as soon as possible." He looked at me as if I was insane.
"If. You said if we can get our hands on one. It'll be nearly impossible to catch one. They're smart, but you gave me another idea. How about a Ruslka? Those demons are everywhere and no one likes them anyways. Rusalka week is coming up too and it won't be too hard to get one of those. Yeah sure I'd probably put up a fight but we could take one down."
"Yeah, but Rusalki are everywhere. It would be easy to catch one which makes it not worth much, but mermaids. Those things are worth thousands of dollars. That'll definitely get us out of here and it'll support us in New York." He looked at the ocean and at the mermaids that swam by. They were fast swimmers, yes, but I'm sure we can figure something out. "Think about it Ragnor. Don't you hate it here? I don't know about you, but I definitely hate it here. Ragnor-."
"Quiet. I get it, and I've made up my mind." He groaned. There was no fighting with me. He knew he'd have to agree or I'd just keep pushing at it. "I Guess it'll have to work. It better work or I'm leaving to America without you." He rolled his eyes and walked to the other side of the boat.
"Thank you, Ragnor." He pretended to ignore me, but I know he heard me. We continued our work without speaking of money or mermaids for the rest of the evening. We'll begin tomorrow for sure.
When it was time to go home Ragnor turned the boat back and we got back to the shore in no time. When we got to the shore we lugged our catch for the day to a small shop. Our boss was a small man. Ragnor was at least a foot taller than him, and Ragnor wasn't even as tall as I was. We left our catch there and he then paid us for today's work. He would take it and go sell it to markets and store. The small man was mostly silent, but we didn't care. As long as I was able to go home with money in my pocket.
It was the same routine everyday. He turned the boat back, we sold our catch to our boss, we get paid, and we go home. End of story. It got boring honestly, but if my plan works our we won't have to be doing this any longer. Maybe we'll have more adventure when we move. Well, as much adventure as we can have with our money. Sadly money affected every aspect of my life. If it wasn't for that than maybe my life wouldn't be as bad, but it is what it is.
Ragnor I made it back to our houses. We didn't live too far away from the ocean, so we were able to walk home after work. The ocean was gorgeous as the sun began to set. It might be the most beautiful thing around here. The setting sun made colors dance along the surface. It simmered in brilliant reds, pinks, blues, and yellows. Making it look like someone smeared paint over a canvas. Cars passed by, the water was calm and undisturbed, and the sun was barely a sliver over the horizon. It made me feel calm and at peace. The sight never failed to take my breath away. It was the only thing worth looking at around here. Well, maybe besides me.
Our walk home was silent as it usually was. We were tired, and we didn't have to communicate to know that. Ragnor lived right next to me, so when we reached our street we part and say goodbye. Then we're on our only slightly different paths. All houses on my street were somewhat similar. They all they the same layout inside. My house was small with one bedroom and bathroom. There was a small living area and a kitchen. Though, I didn't stay here much. I tried to get out as much as I could into town. Often spending what little money I already had. Either way, this was home to me. Then again, not for much longer.
As soon as I reached my bedroom I fell onto my old bed. The springs creeked but the noise didn't bother me anymore. After living here my whole life, you grow accustomed to such things. I've also learned which places in the house I should put a bucket under when it starts to rain to collect the water that falls down. Sadly many of those places were in my room. I've had to get used to many noises in the night to get to bed, but I don't get much sleep anyways. No matter tired I am, I never get much sleep. This night was no exception even though my eyes were closed as soon as my head hit the pillow.
Another sort of short chapter. Hey but I hoped you liked it I enjoyed writing it. And I usually try to do weekly updates, but I don't think I can do that until next month. School is starting soon and I also have dance practices for my friend's Quinceañera. Until then, bear with me and ill try to update as much as I can. Vote, comment, and stay awesome.
