Introduction

I gasped from my position inside the ventilation shaft, blue eyes widening as my fingers tightened on the metal grate. Trembling, I slung my pack on my shoulders and ran off, towards home, towards my brother, Max. We had to move. Why? Example: Monsters, which EAT borrowers.

We live in a small area between two walls, surrounded by insulation, which keeps us warm during winter. Before my father was.... killed, he had made a sort of tunnel through the insulation, and hollowed out an area roughly the size of a toaster oven. The walls are covered in scraps of fabric and there are two levels, a top where we keep all our stuff, and a bottom, where we sleep. Max is on the top layer organizing our food and materials, muttering to himself as he does so.

He turns as I climb the toothpick ladder frantically, and watches confusedly as I grab an extra bag, filling it with cracker chunks and shreds of beef jerky.

"Audrey? What's going on?"

My eyes flash to him.

"There are monsters moving in. Remember what Dad said about em?"

"T-that they e-e-eat borrowers?"

I nod, and his face pales.

"W-We have to leave!"

Borrowers move houses from only extreme circumstances. Example: Death of House-Dweller. Example: Being seen. Example: Threat such as cat.... Or monster.
