Chapter 8- Wolf's-Bane and Reunion

Annabelle's POV

A female faun led Peter, Susan, Lucy, and me through the crowded camp, directing us towards two tents. Peter was directed to the smaller of the two while Susan, Lucy and I were taken to the slightly larger one. Peter nodded to us as he disappeared into his tent. I followed Susan and Lucy inside our tent.

Inside was decorated much like a grand bedroom, though instead of beds, three hammocks hung next to each other. A mirror stood to one side. There was a trunk next to it, the lid open, revealing all sorts of different dresses. Lucy immediately ran forward and pulled out a dress just her size.

"Look Susan!" She exclaimed. Susan and I looked at each other, grinning widely. We leaped forward, all of us grabbing dresses, holding them up to ourselves and each other, trying to pick out one for each of us. We each changed through about half a dozen dresses.

I twirled around in a deep red floor length dress. It was snug around my waist, but the skirt widened out. The sleeves were long and fanned out at my elbows, the hem cut at an angle so one end hung just below my hands, but the other stopped at my wrists.

"You look amazing!" Lucy shrieked. I laughed.

"Thank you." I said, catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I halted.

The hint of a smile remained on my face and my neat hair cascaded down my shoulders and back. I felt taller and older than I did before we entered Narnia. And my eyes weren't tired or scared.

"Is something wrong?" Susan asked. I took a breath and straightened the skirt of my dress.

"Yes... I just feel so... different." Susan smiled.

"You look different." She commented. "A good different. Back in...our world, you were sad. And even before we met Aslan, you seemed lost. I don't know what he showed you, but...it obviously pulled a weight off your shoulders." I moved away from the mirror, sitting down on one of the hammocks as Lucy continued to rifle through the trunk. Susan sat down across from her on her own hammock.

"Aslan showed me my past. One I didn't remember. My time in Narnia before the white witch attacked. I saw my parents again and my mother was like me, just like Father Christmas said." I said.

"I didn't realize you never knew your parents. I'm sorry."

"It's okay. I guess I always held hope that they were still alive somewhere. But I'm happier knowing that they loved me right up until the very end." Susan smiled.

"So that's where you're at now? Happy?" She asked hopefully.

"Content is more accurate, I suppose."

"Susan, can you help me?" Lucy asked, half a dress pulled over her head as she struggle to tie the back. Susan and I laughed, getting up to help her. Then we made our way down to the river to wash up

I stood in the river next to Susan and Lucy, staring out at the mountains in the distance. Susan and Lucy were laughing next to me, but I found myself focusing on my own thoughts.

My mother and father were in the back of my mind, laughing an dancing like they always seemed to do in each and every memory Aslan revealed to me. With them with me, my thoughts were no longer dark and muddled, but instead they were bright and clear.

Edmund remained the forefront of my mind. Now with a personal memory of what the white witch was capable, I didn't want Edmund to have to stay in her clutches any longer.

Suddenly I was splashed with cold water. I shrieked in surprise and turned to see Lucy with a guilty look on her face. I laughed and splashed her back, catching Susan in the line of fire as well. They both shrieked and laughed as we continued to splash in the water.

When we were out of breath, we climbed out and Susan reached for her towel.

A wolf jumped out with a snarl, causing us to scream. I immediately reached behind my back for my axe, realizing it was missing. Susan glanced over at the table where we had placed our things and threw the towel at the wolf before sprinting towards it.

I grabbed Lucy and pushed her up a tree before following close behind. Susan blew into her horn, the sound echoing into the sky.

"Susan!" I screamed as a second wolf moved to attack her. She moved quickly and I reached a hand down, pulling her up into the tree.

Both wolves jumped and tried to bite at our feet. I heard splashing and saw Peter running through the river, his sword at the ready.

Aslan followed behind as well as an army of centaurs. He pinned a wolf to the ground.

"Stay your weapons! This is Peter's battle." He bellowed. Peter pointed his sword at the wolf as it circled him. It spat insults at him, one after the other.

"You might be a man, but you're going to die...like a dog!" The wolf leaped and tackled Peter to the ground.

"Peter!" Lucy, Susan, and I screamed, all of us jumping from the tree. Susan and I, pulled the limp wolf off of Peter, finding him uninjured. He sat up, wide-eyed and shaking. Susan pulled him into a tight hug, Lucy joining in.

Aslan released the other wolf, letting it run away.

"Follow him! He'll lead you to Edmund." He said to the warriors behind him. Orieus nodded and rose off. Aslan turned his eyes on the four of us.

"Peter, clean your sword." He commanded. Peter stood up and walked down to the water, rinsing his sword of blood. He knelt down, planting the tip of the sword in the grass.

"Rise, Sir Peter Wolfs-bane--Knight of Narnia." Peter looks at Aslan in awe and stood up. Susan, Lucy and I embraced him.

****

The next morning, I rose early and got dressed. Susan stirred slightly as I strapped on my axe and short swords, slipping out side. The sun was just rising over the mountains and few creatures milled around outside. Orieus walked by me, bowing his head slightly.

"Edmund?" I asked. He looked behind him. I followed his gaze, looking up to see a large rock formation to where Aslan was talking quietly to a young boy.

A smile grew on my face as I recognized Edmund, still dressed in his English clothing that he had stepped into Narnia wearing. The lion spoke to him in hushed tones, but I knew that Edmund was safe. Peter emerged from the tent next to me, noticing me. I looked over to him, smiling widely.

"What?" He asked. I pointed in Edmund's direction. He let out a short laugh, relief on his face as tears sparked up in his eyes. Lucy and Susan emerge from the tent behind me, following mine and Peter's gaze.

"Edmund!" Lucy shouted excitedly, running forward. Peter quickly reached out and grabbed her arm, stopping her in her tracks.  Edmund turns at the sound of her voice. Aslan finishes his conversation with Edmund and they both began walking towards us.

"What's done is done. There is no need to speak to Edmund about what is past." Aslan said before nodding to all of us and walking away.

"Hello." Edmund said unsure. Lucy immediately wrapped her arms around him tightly. Susan does too. Edmund let out a sigh of relief.

"It's good to see you in one piece." I said. Edmund looked over to me, his eyes widening slightly.

"Thank you." He said, with a nod.

"Are you alright?" Susan asked, looking him over much like a mother would.

"I'm a little tired." Edmund admitted.

"Get some sleep." Peter said, walking up and motioning to their shared tent. Edmund nodded, and began walking towards the tent. "And Edmund..." Peter called after him. Edmund turned.

"...try not to wander off." Peter said, a light smile playing on his lips. Edmund flashed him a smile in return.

Edmund emerged from the tent hours later, just as lunch was being brought for us. Edmund had changed out of his clothes, wearing a similar tunic as Peter. He eagerly sat down at the table and grabbed a plate, filling it up with toast. He started munching on it hungrily.

"Narnia's not going to run out of toast, Ed." Lucy laughed. Edmund sent her a smile, slowing his chewing. Peter walked up to the table, his arms crossed.

"I'm sure they'll pack something up for the journey back." He commented. We all turned to look up at him.

"We're going home?" Susan asked.

"You are. I promised Mum I'd keep you three safe. But it doesn't mean I can't stay behind and help." Peter said.

"But they need us. All five of us." Lucy said.

"Lucy, it's too dangerous. You and Anna almost drowned! Edmund was almost killed!"

"Which is why we have to stay." Edmund spoke up. "I've seen what the White Witch can do. And I've helped her do it. And we can't leave these people behind to suffer for it."

"Anna, what do you think?" Peter asked, looking to me. "Have you...seen anything?" I turned to took at him.

"My mother was the one who spoke the prophecy into existence. I believe her... All of you are meant to play an important part in this story." I said. Peter sighed, looking defeated.

"Well, I suppose that's it then." Susan said, standing up from the table.

Where are you going?" Peter asked as Susan bent to pick up her bow.

"To get in some practice." She said with a smirk.
