Chapter 5- Hidden Tunnels and A Wolf Chase
Annabelle's pov
I sprinted behind Peter as he tried to catch up to Edmund, who I could just barely see in the distance.
"Hurry!" Peter shouted over his shoulder at everyone else. We reached the top of the hill. Edmund in the distance was walking through the Witch's gates, disappearing inside.
"Edmund!" Lucy shouted
"Shh! They'll hear ya!" Mr. Beaver warned. Peter took off after Edmund but Mr. Beaver leaped forward, grabbing him by the sleeve of his coat
"No!"
"Get off me!" Peter protested.
"You're playing into her hands." Mr. Beaver pressed.
"We just can't let him go!" Susan argued.
"He's our brother!" Lucy added.
"He's the bait! The Witch wants all five of ya!"Mr. Beaver said
"Why?" Peter asked.
"To stop the prophecy from coming true! To kill ya!" Mr. Beaver said, raising his voice.
"This is all your fault." Susan snapped at Peter, who looked at her in shock.
"My fault?"
"None of this would have happened if you had just listened to me in the first place!" Susan continued.
"Oh, so you knew this would happen?" Peter countered.
"I didn't know what would happen." Susan snapped back.
Suddenly, my vision wavered and I was standing outside of a grand tent in some sort of makeshift camp. The snow was gone and the grass was green, but in my heart I knew this was still Narnia. I looked up to a large rock formation to see a beautiful golden lion, talking to a young boy.
A smile grew on my face as I recognized Edmund, still dressed in his English clothing that he had stepped into Narnia wearing. The lion spoke to him in hushed tones, but I knew that Edmund was safe.
I gasped as I came back to the present, the three Pevensie's watching me curiously as I stumbled back a few paces.
"You saw something, didn't ya?" Mr. Beaver asked eagerly. I opened my mouth to say 'no,' but then I glanced back at Peter, Susan, and Lucy, who all had worry for their brother plastered onto their faces. I stood a little taller and looked Peter in the eyes.
"Edmund will be alright. There will come a time when he will be safe and back with us." I said slowly.
"You...saw him?" Peter asked, seeming wary to mention me seeing the future.
"Yes."
"And how did he get back?" Peter asked. I looked over to Mr. Beaver, recounting the previous conversation in his home.
"Only Aslan can save your brother." Mr. Beaver said.
"Then take us to him."
Mr. Beaver ushered us away from the Witch's Castle and we began walking back towards his home. Suddenly, a wolf's howl sounded on the wind. Mr. Beaver's eyes went wide.
"It's her wolves! Run!" He shouted. Peter grabbed hold of Lucy and ran after the beaver. Susan grabbed my hand and we ran in pace with each other, behind Peter. They reached the small dam and Mr. Beaver burst through the door.
"Hurry, Mama! They're after us!"
"Oh, right then..." Mrs. Beaver said before dashing around grabbing things from various cupboards.
"What's she doing?" Peter asked.
"Oh, you'll be thanking me later. It's a long journey and Beaver gets prettycranky when he's hungry." Mrs. Beaver rambled, tossing food into a basket.
"I'm cranky now!" Mr. Beaver shouted. Susan moved to help Mrs. Beaver.
"Do you think we'll need jam?" She asked.
"Only if the Witch serves toast." Peter snapped. The wolves suddenly began clawing their way through the dam walls. I jumped away from the wall as a wolf's paw broke through the wood.
"Come on!" Mr. Beaver called, opening a small door that led into a tunnel. Lucy jumped down first, then Susan. Mrs. Beaver followed. Peter grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the tunnel. I jumped down and Mr. Beaver hopped down after me.
"Peter, come on!" I called as everyone else started running down the tunnel. The blond boy hopped down, closing the door behind him. Without thinking, I grabbed hold of his hand and began dragging him down the tunnel. We slowed to a brisk walk once we caught up with everyone.
"Badger and me dug this. Comes out right near his place." Mr. Beaver explained.
"You told me it led to your mum's!" Mrs. Beaver said. Lucy tripped over a root, just as howling echoed behind them.
"Lucy!" Susan exclaimed, helping her up.
"They're in the tunnel." Lucy said
"Quick!This way." Mr. Beaver called.
"Hurry!"
"Run!" We began running at full speed, taking several twists and turns.
"Quick! Quick! Quick!" We suddenly came to a stop at a dead end.
"You should have brought a map!" Mrs. Beaver shouted.
"There wasn't room next to the jam!" He snapped, jumping up the wall and into the hold. Susan lifted up Lucy before climbing out after. Mrs. Beaver jumped up after. Peter boosted me up and I climbed out before turning and grabbing Peter, helping him up as well. Lucy backs away as the everyone emerged, tripping and falling flat on her back. Peter and Mr. Beaverroll a barrel in front of the hole, Mr. Beaver turned around and his face dropped when he saw what Lucytripped over – little woodland creatures turned to stone. Mr. Beaver walked up to a stoneBadger and touched its paw.
"I'm so sorry, dear. Mrs. Beaver murmured.
"He was my best mate." Mr. Beaver said, tears in his eyes.
"What happened here?" Peter asked, looking around. A fox appeared on a little ledge above the Badger hole.
"This is what becomes of those who cross the Witch." He said, jumping down into the snow.
"You take one more step, traitor, and I'll chew you to splinters!" Mr. Beaver threatened.
"Relax. I'm one of the good guys." Fox said calmly.
"Yeah? Well, you look an awful lot like one of the bad ones." Mr. Beaver threatened.
An unfortunate family resemblance. But we can argue breeding later. Right now we'vegot to move." Fox said.
"What did you have in mind?" Peter asked as the wolves got louder.
"Climb." Fox said, nodding his head at the tallest tree in the area. "I'll ward them off." Peter nodded and turned to his sisters. He ushered them up the tree. I climbed up after them. Peter jumped up onto a low hanging branch and pulled himself up. The beavers scurried up and we watched as Fox began covering up our tracks by brushing his tail over the snow.
A few moments of silence passed before the wolves burst from the tunnel, snarling loudly.
"Greetings gents. Lost something have we?" Fox said, his voice steady as he looked up at the wolves. The leader stepped forward, circling him.
"Don't patronize me! I know where your allegiance lies. We'relooking for some humans." He spat.
"Humans? Here in Narnia? That's a valuable bit of information, don't you think?" Fox laughed One of the other wolves pounces on the fox and grabs him harshly in his jaws. Lucy gasped and Peter slapped a hand over her mouth. The leader walked right up to him.
"Your reward is your life. It's not much, but still. Where were the fugitives?" He growled. Fox hung his head in shame and points with a paw.
"North. They ran north." He whispered.
"Smell them out." The leader order. The other wolf cast aside Fox and ran off.

Not long after the wolves departed, we set up a makeshift camp. We sat in a circle around a warm blazing fire. I sat between Susan and Peter, with Lucy next to Susan and the beavers and Fox on the other side of Peter.
"They were helping Tumnus. The Witch got here before I did." Fox explained, nodding to the frozen animals. "Ow! Oh!" He exclaimed as Mrs. Beaver tended to his wounds.
"Are you all right?" Lucy asked.
"Well, I wish I could say their bark was worse than their bite. Ow!" Fox winced away from Mrs. Beaver
"Stop squirming! You're worse than Beaver on bath day." She scolded.
"Worst day of the year." Mr. BEaver chuckled. Fox stood up, facing all of us.
"Thank you for your kindness, but that's all the cure I have time for." He said.
"You're leaving?" Lucy asked.
"It has been a pleasure, My Queen, and an honor," He said with a bow. "but time is short and Aslan himself hasasked me to gather more troops." I looked up at this.
"You've seen Aslan?" Mr. Beaver asked.
"What's he like?" Mrs. Beaver asked excitedly
"Like everything we've ever heard. You'll be glad to have him by your side in the battleagainst the Witch." Fox responded.
"But we're not planning fighting any witch." Susan cut in
"But surely, King Peter, the prophecy!" Fox protested.
"We can't go to war without you." Mr. Beaver added.
"We just want our brother back." Peter said. Then Fox turned to me.
"And Annabelle? This is your home, will you not fight for it?" He asked. I felt all eyes on me and I looked down.
"I have no memory of this place. This is not my home." I whispered, looking up slightly to see Fox's disappointed face.
"One day, Aslan will show you this is where you belong. I only hope that day is soon."
