Chapter 31- A Broken Promise and A Breath of Life

Annabelle's POV

I ran to Peter as the earth began to shake, grabbing hold of his arm to steady myself.

"Aslan!" I shouted over the noise of battle, "It's Aslan!" Peter's eyes widened as the trees around us uprooted themselves and joined the fight, tangling the Telmarines in their roots and throwing them with their branches. Another tree drove its roots back into the ground, digging through the dirt until it reappeared in the midst of the Telmarines, crushing a catapult. Peter raised his sword, rallying the Narnians who had stopped to marvel as the magnificent sight.

"For Aslan!" He cried, charging forward. The Narnians let out a roar, almost loud enough to match that of Aslan's.

I grabbed a low hanging branch of one of the trees and pulled myself up, swinging right into a group of Telmarines. They froze as I landed in their midst. Letting out a battle cry, I attacked. It didn't take long for the soldiers to recover from their shock and soon I was taking on three soldiers alone. My axe was knocked from my hand and a soldier pushed into me with his shield. I fell to the ground, but before the Telmarine could deliver his final blow, a sword stopped him.

"I wouldn't, if I were you." Caspian growled, kicking back my attacker. I jumped to my feet, searching the ground for my axe.

"Looking for this?" Another voice spoke. I turned to see Edmund holding it tightly in one hand as he fought with his sword in the other. He tossed it into my open hands and I turned on my heels, slicing right into the throat of a Telmarine.

"Thanks for the help, boys!" I called, spinning around to lock another soldier into combat.

"No problem!" Caspian answered.

"Peter would actually kill me if anything happened to you!" Edmund added.

"To Beruna!" Sopespian's voice rang loud and clear over the chaos of battle. The Telmarine I was fighting turned without a second thought and fled into the woods. The rest of the soldiers followed suit. I looked at Edmund and Caspian, who both nodded and we followed them to the river.

The Telmarines reached the bridge, Sopespian at the lead, when they all came to a screeching halt. I froze, my feet planted in the sand as I saw two figures blocking the Telmarines way. A valiant queen, holding a dagger tightly in her hand with a smile on her face, and a mighty lion who stood calmly in the face of the enemy. Faces of soldiers looked back as the Narnians blocking their escape.

Sopespian raised his sword and issued a charge, flicking the reigns of his horse to keep going. His army followed suit, running across the bridge and through the water. Seeming unfazed, Lucy and Aslan stood their ground as the Telmarines got closer. Then, just as Sopespian was halfway across the bridge, Aslan let out an earth trembling roar, bringing the Telmarines to a stop. Silence fell as the water began to recede downstream. All eyes followed as the water collected into a mass that leapt forward in large crashing waves.

The Telmarines in the water turned to make for dry land, pushing passed each other in search of an escape. Sopespian dug his heels into the sides of his horse and continued across the bridge. Then from the waves, came the river god, towering over the fearful soldiers. As he drew nearer, the Telmarines jumped from the bridge, swimming back to shore in surrender. The river god dove back into the water and under the bridge, his hands breaking it apart and lifting it high into the air. Sopespian remained on the bridge alone, looking around frantically as his men abandoned him. He locked eyes with me, his eyes becoming filled with rage.

"Witch!" He spat as time seemed to slow around me. In one movement, Sopespian drew out his crossbow and shot just as the river god devoured him. I stumbled as someone  jumped in front of me. The arrow found its mark in Peter's chest as he fell back into my arms and I sunk to the ground.

"Peter!" The scream ripped from my throat as time caught up to itself and the world became a blur. Tears streamed down my face as I supported Peter's head with one hand, the other pressed around the arrow in his chest, trying to slow the bleeding. I looked around at the blurry figures surrounding me.

"Lucy!" I shouted, my throat raw. "Someone get Lucy!"

"Annabelle..." He murmured, his eyes open slightly.

"It's me. I'm here, Peter. I'm right here." I whispered, pressing my forehead against his. "Stay with me." Peter's hand reach up and tangled with my hair.

"I'm sorry..."

"Shhh... It's okay. You're going to be okay." Peter's breath caught in his throat and he let out a shaky cough.

"I love you..." His voice only loud enough for me to hear. His hand slipped from my hair and fell into the sand and his eyes stared up into nothingness. A final breath escaped his lips before his body went still.

"No!" I cried, a sob rising up in my throat as I buried my face into his neck, tears soaking his hair. All around me I heard tears being shed for the fallen king.

"Peter?" A small voice spoke. I looked up to see Lucy and Caspian running up, Lucy holding her cordial in her hand.

"You're too late." I whispered. Behind Lucy came Aslan, walking quietly passed her and coming to a stop in front of me.

"My child, "He breathed. "This is not the end."

"Then save him." I pleaded. Aslan looked at me, sorrow in his eyes as a single tear ran down his face and into the sand. "Please, Aslan." The lion stepped back and sat down, bowing his head slightly. Then his eyes gazed at those around him. From Susan and Edmund holding on to each other for dear life as they stared in horror at their dead brother. To Lucy with her face buried into Caspian's stomach, who eyes showed nothing but despair. Finally, Aslan looked back to me, holding Peter's limp body in my arms, my body shaking with sorrow.

"Peter!" He spoke, his voice loud and clear. "Wake up!" A gust of wind blew passed me, kicking up the sand, which swirled around me before falling back into place and the air growing still. I looked down at Peter to see the arrow gone from his chest and all the blood washed away. His glassy, lifeless eyes blinked and color came back to his cheeks. He took in a gasping breath and sat up, staring at me in confusion.

"What happened?" He asked. I tackled him into a hug, holding onto him tightly, afraid that he would disappear.

"Don't ever do that to me ever again." I ordered. Without a word, he hugged me back just as tightly.

"Peter!" Susan, Edmund, and Lucy cried out, joining in the embrace, all of us shedding tears of joy. Caspian stood by and watched, a relieved smile on his face until Susan pulled him into the hug as well. I looked up to Aslan and pulled away from the hug. I knelt before Aslan, the others following suit.

"Rise, kings and queens of Narnia." Aslan declared. Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy rose to their feet.

"All of you." Aslan murmured. Caspian looked up while I kept my eyes fixed on the ground.

"I do not think I am ready." Caspian said, his voice shaking.

"It's for that very reason I know that you are." Aslan said gently. Caspian took a deep breath and stood. I felt the lion's gaze rest on me.

"Are you not a queen of Narnia, my child?" Aslan spoke.

"I was never meant to rule, Aslan." I said.

"You were always meant to rule, even if you couldn't see it inside yourself." I bit my lip and shook my head.

"I never wished to be queen. I only ever wanted to serve."

"Did you not serve Narnia as her queen? Were you not serving when you guided Caspian to this moment? Or when you helped regain a Narnia that all thought was lost?" I finally looked up into the lion's golden gaze. "This was always my plan for you. Now rise Queen Annabelle, Seer of Narnia." I stood to my feet, still unsure of my place, until I felt Peter's hand in my own and Susan putting a hand on my shoulder. Edmund shot me a toothy grin and Lucy, unable to contain her joy, tackled me into a hug.

Then from behind us came the playing of a small, sad flute. I turned to a group of mice walking solemnly forward, two carrying Reepicheep on a makeshift grass stretcher. Lucy ran forward and poured a single drop of the fire flower from her cordial into the noble mouse's mouth. Reepicheep to a breath in and sat up.

"Oh, thank you, Your Majesty..." He said to Lucy, standing to his feet. He turned to see Aslan and his eyes went wide. "Oh, hail Aslan! It is a great honor to be—" He moved to bow but stumbled forward, looking around, he found only a stump where his tail once was. One of his mouse soldiers let out a gasp. Reepicheep covered the stump in embarrassment.

"I am completely out of countenance. I mustcrave your indulgence for appearing in this unseemlyfashion. Perhaps a drop more?" He looked up at Lucy, who still help her cordial.

"I don't think it does that." Lucy answered with a frown.

"You can have a go." The mouse suggested.

"It becomes you well, Small One." Aslan cut in.

"All the same, great king, I regret that I mustwithdraw. For a tail is the honor and glory of a mouse." Reepicheep said, drawing his sword and raising it towards the lion.

"Perhaps you think too much of your honor, friend." Reepicheep rose to his feet.

"Well, it's not just the honor. It's also greatfor balance... and climbing... and grabbing things."  He explained as the other mice drew their swords and hold out their tails.

"May it please your high Majesty, we will notbear the shame of wearing an honor denied to our chief." One declared as Aslan laughed. He turned his gentle eyes on Reepicheep.

"Not for your honor, but for the love of your people..." With those words, Reepicheep's tail grew back to its full length.

"Oh, look! Thank you, thank you, my liege! Iwill treasure it always! From this day forward, it willserve as a great reminder of my huge humility." Aslan chuckled and looked back at the six of us still standing before him.

"Now, where is this dear little friend you've told meso much about?" We all turned heads to see Trumpkin calling out orders to the surrendering Telmarines. He looked over nervously, seeing all eyes on him. He slowly walked over and got to his knees, bowing his head low. Aslan stood to his feet and roared. Trumpkin cowered for a moment, trembling at the power of Aslan as he looked up.

"Do you see him now?" Lucy asked with a wide smile on her face. I watched everything happening before me, the Telmarines throwing down their weapons, Narnians laughing and talking to one another. My lost family now found once more stood by my side, with our new found friend, Caspian.

I felt the world around me still as words came to my mind that then flowed from my lips without me granting them permission.

"Upon this day, the Telmarine who saved Narnia has now proved himself worthy in this war of deliverance.

He will be clothed in honor and courage then crowned with gold.

The Kings and Queens of Old shall entrust the throne to the new King of Narnia when the moon is but a sliver in the sky.

And thus the great lion shall depart, as peace meets this land once more."

I blinked and the world came back to life, with Peter holding me steady and Aslan staring at me with a small smile on his face.

"Just as the Seer has spoken, Prince Caspian shall be crowned in four days time." Aslan declared.
