Chapter 3- Visions and Reality

Annabelle's pov

I watched as Susan opened the beautiful wooden wardrobe and pushed the coats aside. She knocked on the back of it as Edmund, who was behind the wardrobe, knocked back twice. Susan stepped out and looked at Lucy.

"The only wood in here is the back of the wardrobe." She said gently. Peter sighed.

"One game at a time, Lu. We don't all have your imagination."

"But I wasn't imagining!" Lucy countered. Suddenly I felt dizzy and had to lean against the wall for support. Luckily, everyone else was so wrapped up in Lucy's story that they didn't pay me any attention.

"That's enough." Susan ordered.

"Well I believe you." Edmund stepped up and I felt dread wash over me as I knew what was coming.

"You do?" Lucy's eyes were wide and so full of hope.

"Yeah, didn't I tell you about the football field in the bathroom cupboard?"

"Why don't you just stop it? You always have to make everything worse." Peter scolded.

"It was just a joke!" Edmund defended.

Edmund yelled at Peter then they all faded away. I was running down the corridor of the mansion with Lucy's hand in mine. Footsteps of Ms. McCready echoed against the walls, seeming to follow us where ever we went.

Peter rushed to a door, twisting the knob frantically, but it didn't budge. Edmund pushed passed and ran to the second door, swinging it open and sprinting to the wardrobe.

"Come on!" He urged. Susan glared at him.

"You've got to be joking." She scowls. The footsteps thunder closer and Peter shoves her forward.

"Go!" He pushes all of us into the wardrobe, before following me and closing the door. We all begin to step back, knocking elbows and shouting at one another until Peter and Susan are pushed to the ground.

I look up in awe at the snow covered world. My breath billows out of my mouth in small clouds. Peter and Susan stand up, their faces equally shocked.

"Impossible." Susan whispers.

"Annabelle?" My head shoots up to see Lucy staring at me, her eyes filled with tears.

"Lucy..." I stepped forward and knelt down, "I...I think I believe you..."

"You do? Wait... you're not lying like Edmund, are you?" She stepped away.

"No. No not at all. Lucy, I've seen this place. All my life, I've dreamed of it. I always thought it as all in my head but maybe... maybe since you've seen it too..."

"Then maybe it's real!" Lucy cried with excitement.

"Lucy! Annabelle! Time to eat!" I heard Ms. McCready shout. I took Lucy's hand and stood up.

"Come on. We can talk about this later."

"Peter wake up! Peter wake up! It's there, it's really there!" I woke up to Lucy shouting from the other room. Quickly grabbing my robe and slippers, I raced into Peter and Edmund's shared room to see Peter standing up, his hair ruffled and his eyes tired. Susan followed after me, tying her robe around her waist.

"Oh Lucy, you've been dreaming." She said gently. Lucy shook her head excitedly.

"But I haven't! I've seen Mr. Tumnus again! And this time- Edmund went too!" All eyes turned to Edmund, how looked around guiltily.

"You saw the faun?" Peter asked. Edmund shook his head.

"Well...he didn't actually go there with me..." She suddenly turned and eyed her brother. " What were you doing Edmund?"

He glanced at each of us individually, almost squirming under our stares.

"I..I was just playing along. I'm sorry Peter. I shouldn't have encouraged her. You know what little children are like these days. They just don't know when to stop pretending." With those words, he sat down on the bed, a smug smile playing on his lips as Lucy teared up. She bolted from the room, her cries echoing through the hall.

I hurry after her with Susan. Peter rushes out after pushing Edmund over. I sprint down the hall, reaching Lucy right as she runs straight into an elderly man with a robe on. Her arms swing around his waist as she hugs him tight.

"You children are one shenanigan away from sleeping in the stab-" Ms. McCready comes marching around the corner, stopping short once she sees the professor.

"Professor, I'm sorry. I told them you were not to be disturbed."

"It's alright, Ms. McCready. I'm sure there's an explanation. But I think this one is in need of some hot chocolate." He slowly led Lucy towards Ms. McCready.

"Yes, professor. Come on dear." She took Lucy by the hand and walked in the direction of the kitchen.

Susan and Peter turned to leave but the Professor cleared his throat and motioned for us to follow him.

He led the three of us up to his office. It was messy, full of books and smelled of smoke. Professor Kirk sat down and pulled out his pipe, taking a moment to light it before looking at the three of us.

"You seem to have upset the internal balance of my housekeeper." He commented, a spark of humor in his eyes.

"We're very sorry sir, it won't happen again." Peter grabbed Susan's hand to leave, but she pulls away.

"It's our sister, sir. Lucy."

"The weeping girl?"

"Yes, sir. She's upset."

"Hence the weeping."

"It's nothing. We can handle it." Peter again grabbed hold of Susan.

"Oh I can see that." The professor said as Susan turned back to him.

"She thinks she's found a magical land, in the upstairs wardrobe." In that instant, Professor Kirk lost the humor in his eyes and replaced it with wonder as he stood up.

"What did you say?" He asked as he motioned for us to sit down.

"The wardrobe...upstairs. Lucy thinks she's found a forest inside." Peter explained a little slower.

"She won't stop going on about it." Susan continued.

"What was it like?" He asked, still transfixed in wonder.

"Like talking to a lunatic." Susan sighed. I felt myself shrink down into the couch. Professor Kirk glanced at me.

"No, not her.. the forest!" Peter and Susan exchanged a look.

"You're not saying you believe her?"

 "You don't?"

Of course not. I mean, logically, it's impossible." Susan explained.

"What do they teach in schools these days?" The professor muttered.

"Edmund said they were only pretending." Peter cut in.

"And he's usually the more truthful one, is he?"

"No...this would be the first time."

"So, if she's not mad and she's not lying, then logically...we must assume she's telling thetruth." "You're saying we should just believe her?"

"She's your sister, isn't she? You're a family. You might just try acting like one." Professor Kirk then looked at me and smiled. Peter and Susan got up and left the room. I began to follow when Professor Kirk cleared his throat.

"You believe her, don't you?" He asked.

"I don't know what I believe right now..."

"But you have seen it."

"How did you...?"

"That, my dear,  is a conversation for another day. Good night."

The next morning, I walked outside to see Peter, Susan, and Edmund playing cricket. Lucy sat in the shade of the trees, head buried into a book. When Peter laid eyes on me, he smiled and waved me over but I shook my head and walked over to Lucy, sitting down in front of her.

"I thought we could talk about Narnia." I said, quietly. Lucy's head shot up and she smiled.

"What have you seen? In your dreams and stuff?" I sighed, nervous about talking about my dreams.

"Well, it started when I was little...I would have dreams of a world completely frozen over,  almost as if it had never known the warmth."

"Mr. Tumnus said it was always winter, always cold..." Lucy mumbled.

"At first they were just dreams...but then they started leaking out the the waking world. All of a sudden I'd be immersed in this world. And every since I've met you and your family, you all have been a part of it. I only see bits and pieces, but it's like we're on a quest..."

"Like a vision! Maybe you're seeing the future!" Lucy said excitedly. I opened my mouth to respond when the sound of glass shattering filled the air. I looked up to see a gaping hole in a stained glass window. Lucy and I jumped up and ran after her siblings into the house.

Edmund, Peter and Susan stood over an armor display that had been knocked to the ground by the cricket ball, shattered glass littering the floor.

"Well done, Ed!" Peter scolded.

"You bowled it!" Edmund countered. Suddenly, footsteps began echoing through the house, seemingly surrounding us. A sound that was some how familiar to me.

"The Macready!" Susan said frantically

"Run!" Peter yelled.

I ran down the corridor of the mansion with Lucy's hand in mine.

"You've got to be joking." She scowled. The footsteps thundered closer and Peter shoved her forward.

"Go!" He pushed all of us into the wardrobe, before following me and closing the door. We all stepped back, knocking elbows and shouting at one another until Peter and Susan were pushed to the ground.

I looked up in awe at the snow covered world. My breath billowed out of my mouth in small clouds. Peter and Susan stand up, their faces equally shocked.

"Impossible." Susan whispered.

Impossible is right, I thought as now my visions were becoming a reality.
