The Discworld and Death's Domain in the Uncommon Year 1973
It'd been a long day, I'd somehow forgotten that no one could see me- again- and got knocked off a roof because someone opened a window I'd been working on in Ahnk-Morpork. Because of course while no one except for wizards, witches, or beggars could see or interact with me objects still hurt. So I picked myself up from the cobblestones, because of course I'd forgotten that I could fly after being knocked off the roof, picked up my paintbrush which had skittered out of my hand when I fell, and made my way to go visit my oldest and only friend.
"That's it.... I'm only painting on the windows of the Unseen University from now on, at least they know to wait until after I've finished to open the windows." I groaned rubbing the spot on my back that I'd hit. A strong, cold wind blew down the street carrying a message of the Wintersmith's displeasure at my choice.
"Hey! I don't want to hear it! You don't have a corporeal form to injure, I do! And besides quite frankly if you don't pay me somehow you aren't actually my boss." I stated glaring in the direction that the wind had come from. When no response came I rolled my eyes and made my way to Death's Domain. I'd been expecting to get my usual greeting of "Oh you're 'ere again are you? Well make yourself useful and go talk to 'im He's in 'is office with that look in 'is eye that always means trouble." But instead I was met by Albert running around like he'd been set on fire and only stopped briefly enough to say, "I've lost 'er if Master doesn't kill me then 'er mother bloody well will!" Suddenly feeling overcome with curiosity I made my way to Death's office hoping to find him there. The good news was that I did, the inevitable bad news was that he was sobbing. In all my existence I'd never seen the old skeleton cry, quite frankly I'd always been pretty sure that he couldn't, but here He was slumped over His desk, His face in His bony hands sobbing for all He was worth. I gingerly walked over to him and, after a great deal of deliberation, asked, "What's wrong? Albert mentioned that he'd, ahem, 'lost' someone?" He looked up at me despondently and moaned, ALBERT HAS LOST SUSAN....... I WAS ONLY GONE FOR A SHORT HOUR AND HE LOST HER! I frowned. Of course I'd heard about my friend's granddaughter to no end in the three years since her birth however I'd never met her myself. However that aside I couldn't just leave a kid to be lost in Death's Domain granddaughter or not, besides if there was any way to get Death to stop crying I wanted to make sure it happened it was..... unnerving to say the least.
"Okay, where could she have gone?" I asked a grin spreading across my face. He looked at me and asked, WHAT? Clearly shocked by my attempt at helpfulness. I repeated my question more emphatically and He told me to check the forest as she'd been really interested in going exploring there since she'd been everywhere else. I nodded and rushed off, hurrying into the woods. I tried calling out for her a couple times but stopped when I heard the faint sound of sobbing. I made my way towards the noise and found myself emerging from some bushes into a tiny clearing where a little girl with white hair was seated against a tree in front of me. She was looking at me with fear stricken black eyes and flinched when I crouched down and held out my hand.
"Hey, hey it's alright, I'm a friend of your grandfather's he sent me to come find you." I said with a reassuring smile. She searched my eyes for a moment before rushing over to me and clamping onto me in a teary hug. I fell back a little, shocked by the contact. Before wrapping my arms around her tiny, warm frame and picking her up.
"Let's get you home, okay Susie?" I asked smiling fondly at the little girl who's face was still buried in the crook of my neck as her tears froze on her cheeks. She nodded slightly before snuggling into me and falling asleep. I chuckled and made my way back to the house.

I had let myself get distracted. I'd been so DAMN focused on my own thoughts and memories that I hadn't noticed the shadows gathering in the room; and now here Pitch was standing in front of Susan and Sophie clear as day while I was being held back by his black sand, separated from my staff. I kicked and, admittedly with more than a little shame, swore as he reached out towards them. Susan glared at him unwaveringly and, without taking her eyes off the bogeyman before her, ordered Sophie to put her head under the blankets. That... won't work....! I thought straining against the sand that was slowly starting to tighten around my throat. However as soon as the little girl had done what she'd been told Pitch swung his head towards Susan with a fierce glare.
"Just because you've been able to keep her from me for now doesn't mean that I won't be able to find her later." He hissed earning a strained but victorious grin on my part. My grin didn't last long however as his glare was replaced by a sneering grin and he said, "No matter, after all it wasn't her I was here for!" I was finally able to freeze the sand enough to get free just as Pitch closed a hand around Susan's throat and both of them disappeared into the shadows.
