Chapter nine
Jack flew alongside Binky and tried not to glance at Susan who rode the horse quietly. He sighed and flew in a bit closer so that he could talk to her.
"Hey!" He yelled over the wind. She looked at him and replied,
"Yes?" He awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck and asked her, "Are you sure you'll be fine in that cloak? I mean it's still pretty... You know...." He trailed off.
"Oh don't worry about it, once we've gotten into town it will update itself." She said with the self-assuring tone of someone who is far too used to doing something. And once they had landed and made it into town he noticed that she was right, it did in fact update itself. It had changed from a long cloak to a long, hooded black down coat. The change was so sudden that Jack balked when he noticed it. This got a reaction that from the looks of it even Susan hadn't expected: it made her giggle. A shocked and mortified blush shot its way across her pale face as she covered her mouth in horror. Jack chuckled slightly and put a hand on her shoulder, in what he hoped came across as a friendly sort of way, before simply telling her,
"You have a nice laugh."
Albert chuckled as he read Susan's Autobiography.
"Oh it'll be really good when she finds out who 'e is..." He murmured laughing quietly to himself.
Jack shot Susan a worried look as she stood frozen her eyes wide with horror, her hand firmly clamped to her mouth and her birthmark standing out vividly against her pale cheek. If he'd been able to read her thoughts he'd have found himself trying to read a whirlwind of horrified embarrassment that only a woman who's mind still retained the thought processes of the 18 year old it was frozen as, and at its center would have been one simple thought I can not believe I just giggled! As far as Susan was concerned giggling was for the kind of girl who sat around in towers all day waiting for a charming, and usually insincere and integrity-less, man on a white horse to come save her- and she knew with absolute certainty that the only tall man on a white horse coming to save her was not only actively on holiday but would leave her waiting a very, very long time. All that being said she felt that she couldn't have helped but giggle, it just felt like the right thing to do at the time and this is what had really sent her usually very practical and controlled mind into a total tail-or as she noted with a private chuckle followed by a very stern self-berating "head"-spin. Jack tentatively placed a hand on her other shoulder hoping that he wouldn't startle her too much because, to be honest he really didn't want her to hit him and he had the sinking feeling that that would be exactly what she'd do.
"You gonna be ok soon or do you need a minute?" He asked her cautiously. She took a deep breath and slowly lowered her hand as though she were worried that she'd giggle again.
"I....think I'm fine..." She said mentally checking off the fact that she was still blushing and that there was a strange tingling sensation coming from the spots Jack had his hands over that she knew for a fact could NOT be attributed to the fact that his hand was incredibly cold.
"Alright then! Come on, my friend is probably waiting!" He suddenly called clapping his hands together and hurrying off through the town. Had Susan been able to read Jack's mind it would have been a slightly easier read than her own had been a moment before. In fact there would only have been two thoughts that she would need to pay any mind to: she looks really pretty when she smiles.... And I hope Jamie hasn't stopped believing in me.
Meanwhile in a cave quite a ways underground, Pitch Black was finishing up his newly updated plan. With the emergence of this new Death he'd come to a new conclusion as to how to take his revenge. He figured that if he could manage to break her spirit or convince her it was in Her best interest to do so he'd be able to make this new Death join him. And if he did that, oh well then no one could stop him, oh no, no human, guardian or otherwise would be able to lift a finger against him then. What Pitch's plan lacked however was a contingency plan for if his plan to traumatize and/or convince Susan ultimately failed; this is, of course, because it hadn't come to mind. It was rather unfortunately too late when he would come to realize this significant flaw in his plan. But first he would need to find her, and that would take quite some doing.
Jack had finally made it, he was outside Jamie's house waiting for Susan who was just getting to the lawn. Here goes nothing... He thought as the two of them went around to the back of the house and into the yard. Immediately Sophie ran over and clamped her arms around Jack before staring up at Susan with her natural cry of, "Pretty!" Which of course caused Jamie, who was, as all teenagers are, glued to his phone, to look up and frown while she babbled to Jack about her year so far.
"Sophie, who are you talking to?" He asked walking up to the three of them. Jack very clearly felt his heart plummet. Because while he knew that eventually Jamie would have stopped believing in him regardless of whatever he tried, the fact that it was happening was still just as painful. This train of thought however was quickly derailed as his friend finished his sentence.
"All I see is a hot goth girl and a loser who is so not in her league." At this Jack, who was equally annoyed and relieved, laughed and gave his friend a good natured punch in the shoulder.
