Chapter four

Susan looked around her at the building she'd arrived in. It was headach-indusingly large, but after living in her grandfather's house as long as she had that didn't bother her, and along with being incredibly brightly lit it smelled strangely like peppermint and cinnamon. That's odd.... She thought frowning slightly why those two smells? Why not just one or the other? She often thought like this in these odd sorts of situations, it was sensible, in fact she had often been chided by Albert for being too sensible. She was pulled out of her thoughts by the approach of a rather large man. He was wearing a red shirt with a rather large woven belt over loose fitting gray pants.
"Death! Old friend! How long has it been?" He cried jovially in a thick Russian accent. He looks a bit like the Hogfather but last I checked he wasn't... Well Russian, not to mention this certainly isn't the castle of bones, and I'm noticing a rather clear lack of tusks..... Though he did get the belly right.... There's no mistake there. She mused.
"AH ER.... YES IT'S ER... BEEN A WHILE..." She replied awkwardly. She tentatively lowered herself off Binky's back and stared fixedly at the ironically interesting floor.
"SO ER... WHY AM I HERE EXACTLY?" She asked politely as she eyed the tattoos on the large man's arms. The tattoos are in the same spots from what I can tell but.... Is that English? He spread his arms out grandly and cried,
"YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO BE GUARDIAN!" Then in the quiet tone of someone who doesn't want to offend their friends but still thinks that it needed to be said added,
"Though I honestly don't see why...." Susan, who tended to be good at keeping her head in this kind of situation, was shocked to her core.
"ME SOMEONE CHOSE ME TO BE A GUARDIAN? THAT'S JUST SICK!" She exclaimed, unfortunately letting a bit of her personality show. They're confused, I know they are, they're all looking at me like I've said something wrong. She chastised herself.
"That's exactly what we were saying!" An Australian voice cried. She turned her head to see what appeared to be either a very large rabbit or an elderly kangaroo. A small yellow-gold man nudged him reproachfully and Susan stiffened. Sandman is here? Oh no.... He's going to recognize me. Wait I think he just winked, ok so he already knows and he won't say anything- that was in poor taste.... Her mind raced as she assembled and organized her thoughts. As she did this however every light in the large room-minus those on the globe-from the fire to the antiquated lightbulbs were simultaneously extinguished and out of the sudden darkness rang deep, dark, malicious laughter. And this event caused Susan to think one simple thought: Oh what now?

They had all been thinking it, the guardians knew that but none of them wanted him to know that. None of them except Bunny of course, formerly being an animal hadn't exactly given him much of a filter, he didn't care who knew what he was thinking. So when the pole suddenly went dark and became filled with dark laughter you can easily imagine that he spared no time expressing himself.
"You've gotta be bloody joking! How the hell did he come back?!" He cried whipping around boomerangs in hand.
"Get in formation! Keep eyes peeled!" Yelled a thickly Russian accented voice. As the guardians, minus Jack who had disappeared shortly after Death's arrival, looked around the dark room wildly trying to find the source of the laughter. After a few minutes of this a feminine, almost delicate voice rang out from under Death's hood.
"I don't have time for this." With that the dark figure made it's way through the faintly lit blackness towards the grand fireplace and deftly removed a poker from the rack with a thin, dainty, and very much living hand. Pitch's laugh broke off suddenly at this action.
"What are you doing with that?" He asked an almost imperceptible tremor in his voice. Then, to the great dismay of everyone present Death removed his hood and revealed a skinny white haired woman.

She was beautiful in a thin or skinny sort of way. That was Jack's first impression of the girl that now stood in front of Pitch. She had bone white hair and from the back he could clearly see a black streak running through it. She held the poker in her right hand like it was some type of rapier a stance that, from the looks of it, had Pitch as terrified as any nightmare. But Jack saw him compose himself and all of the guardians gasped in shock as he removed what appeared to be one of Tooth's containers for children's teeth and offered it to the girl saying,
"I can help you remember everything all you have to do is say you'll join me and you can have these." Jack stiffened as he recalled a similar chain of events between himself and Pitch. He was about to call to her not to do it when she made the most suprising, and honestly in this case rather spectacular, sound: she scoffed at Pitch Black.
"Is this some kind of joke?" She asked incredulously her voice was clear and hard, a serious, no-nonsense kind of voice that usually gets responses of "'s ma'am" or "no ma'am" without needing to be told.
"If you knew anything about who I was you'd know I Inherited my grandfather's Perfect Memory. Not to mention the fact that I know with absolute certainty that those are not my teeth. All that aside you're a bogeyman right?" Pitch numbly nodded and mumbled a, "Yes ma'am...." Before clearing his throat and drawing himself up to his full height in an attempt to cover up his now very clear embarrassment. She nodded stolidly and said,
"Well then, this should be easy." Then with the fluid grace of an experienced golfer, raised the poker above her head and drove it down directly into Pitch Black's stern jaw.
"Since I'm sure we haven't met allow me to introduce myself, my name is Susan Sto Helit," then she gestured calmly to the poker in her hand.
"And this is my poker, I'm sure you've heard a lot about it." After that one simple statement the bogeyman fled with the kind of haste of one who has just seen the harbinger of his doom and wants to be as far away from it as possible. Slowly one by one all of the guardians except for two broke into a broad grin as North spread his arms out wide and called,
"Susan! You haven't changed a bit!"
