~Chapter 35~
-I Will Stand By You
(Caroline's POV)
I'm scared. That's all I have to say. The doctors have been working for days now trying to keep Lily alive and their almost at the point of giving up. I refuse to except that Lily could die all because of one stupid mistake.
I was currently in the waiting room in the hospital waiting for any news about her health. It was one in the morning and I was half asleep until I felt the presence of someone next to me. I looked up to see Stephan staring at me with two cups of coffee in his hands.
"I know you've been here for awhile. Here, I know you need it." He said and I just sleepily took the cup from his hands, taking a sip.
"Where were you these past weeks?" I asked, my voice coming out horsed.
"I've been thinking." He said vaguely.
"About?" I asked.
"Everything." He said. "I took a trip to a cliff my dad would always take my to, to see the stars. I've just been there for the whole time I was gone, just clearing my head. I thought about Lily and how I was the one who caused this. And then it dawned upon me that I'm there trying to figure my life out while your here trying to save Lily and I'm not. So I came here as fast as I could." He explained.
"It's doesn't even matter anymore if your here. Whatever happens, happens. I can't stop that." I said looking down at my lap, a signal tear falling onto my hand.
"Don't cry." He said pulling me into a hug. "She's going to make it through this. And I will stand by you through whatever comes our way." He said calmly.
"Lily Knight." Someone said and we both looked up to see a doctor.
"Yes." Stephan said standing up and I followed suit.
"Your daughter, right? She is now in stable condition. You can visit her when she wakes up and she will be released tomorrow so we can make sure she's healthy." The doctor said and I started to cry.
"Come here." Stephan said pulling me into a hug. "I told you she would make it through this." He mumbled.
"I can't believe my little girl is ok." I said wiping my tears off of my face.
"I can't believe you didn't resist me this time." Stephan said.
"I'm done resisting. And I'm done with this family being messed up one way or another. I just want us to be us. No strings attached." I said with a smile.
"Good, because I want that too." He said pulling me into another hug.
——-
Lily was now home and healthy. She was released a couple of days ago and has been as happy as ever. She was back to her normal giddy self and I couldn't be more happy. Today Lily was two months old and man has she been through a lot. She's also beginning to attempt to walk. She has been crawling everywhere and would occasionally try to stand up after sitting. Of course she would always end up crawling after her failed attempt.
I was currently in the little play pen we had, playing around with Lily. We only ever used the pen for when we were cooking or cleaning the house and couldn't fully take care of Lily. We would put her in the pen and she would play for hours on end with her toys and never cry once. The pen consisted of almost all of Lily's toys, and some pillows as well. I was afraid that Lily might get rug burns from the carpet, so I had put a ton of super soft blankets on the ground of the pen for her. Which she loves to roll around and lay on.
But me being me, I decided since the play pen was quite big I would join Lily. And also because Stephan was busy making dinner and I had nothing to do. I was laying on the ground of the pen and Lily as on top of me just poking my face. She even got my eye at one point. No pun intended. But I wasn't complaining. She was smiling and so was I, even if I might end up blind after this.
Lily pulled at the chain around my neck and started to fiddle with it. By this time, I wasn't paying much attention because I was looking at an important document that was sent to me on my phone. It wasn't until she tried to crawl away with it that she caught my attention.
"What are you doing?" I questioned as if she could understand me. "Oh your playing with this. We need to give this to daddy. I bet he misses it." I said to Lily and picked her up, making my way to the kitchen. I put Lily in her seat and walked over to Stephan who was cooking at the stove. "Whatcha cooking?" I asked.
"Lasagna and green beans." He said.
"You're missing something." I said.
"No, I think I've got everything I need." He said, putting the green beans in a pot filled with boiling water.
"So your not missing this." I said holding up his ring.
"I completely forgot about that. Thank you." He said taking it and puting it back on his finger. "How's Lily?" He asked.
"She's perfectly fine. I think. Nothing weird has happened so that's a good sign." I said looking over at Lily who was playing with her stuffed teddy.
"That's good." He said.
"Something on your mind?" I asked, noticing he looked dazed.
"Welllllll, are you sure you want to know?" He asked.
"Fire away." I said.
"My mother called." He started.
"Oh, what did she say? Did she want to speak to me? Should I call her back?" I asked.
"No, she actually wanted to speak to me." He said, stirring the green beads.
"Oh, well that's no fun. You must have bored her to death with your corny jokes." I joked.
"Harsh. Are my jokes really that bad?" He asked.
"Yes they are." I said, patting him on the shoulder. "So what did she say?" I asked.
"She wants a grandson."
