~Chapter 16~
-The Bomb
(Caroline's POV)
I did as the note said and turned on the news. But I instantly regretted it.
"The Kingdom of Kedoirin was under attack earlier tonight which resulted in the bombing of the royal castle which left no survivors. The King and Queen of Kedoirin were killed in the explosion along with maids and cooks who were in the castle as well. But the only heir to the throne, their daughter Princess Caroline Angelica Rosalina Mayers III was luckily not in the castle at the time of the explosion and is said to be safe in the care of King Gabriel of Cridia. The Royal Court is now saying that she will have to step up to the crown because of what has happened. Phill back to you." The new reporter said.
I instantly turned off the TV and stayed there. I couldn't feel anything. Nothing. No type of emotion was there. I felt lost, empty. But I wasn't feeling really emotions. I was just there. All I heard was people burst into my room yelling and everything happened so quickly.
Guards quickly pulled me up and took me to the safe room. A room that every castle ever built had. A room were it was completely soundproof. Any type recoding or listening device wouldn't work because it was built to not let any type of signal work, in or out. Anyone who wasn't to hear what was being said wasn't aloud in. Only Gabriel, some members of the Royal Court, and me were in the room. No guards, no security, nothing. Just us.
And that's when it hit me finally. A wave of sadness made me buckle under my knees. Tears flowed down my face in rivers. I felt like I could cry an ocean, and I probably did too. Gabriel tried to comfort me but it didn't work. No one could help. My only family, my only true blood was killed. How could this happen? I was only gone for a couple of days.
Once I stopped crying, Gabriel lead me to a chair next to him at the table and gave me a glass of water. I took small sips. Members of the Royal Court sat across from us. As they began to speak I sat there staring at the glass of water, playing with it.
"First off I would like to say that me and the whole Royal Court are very sorry for your loss. We can't imagine how hard it must be." The girl said and I just nodded.
"You won't get much talking out of her. But she thanks you and will be listening to everything you say. Just no reaction." Gabriel explains.
"We understand." Another girl said. "Well, first we need a ruler. She's not married, so who will rule while she's out?" She said.
"Have my trusted ambassador do it. He won't do anything bad. My parents would've put their lives in his hands if it came to it. I'll be out for awhile. I know I will." I mumble. I see her nod out of the corner of my eye and write something down.
"The princess will now have to be closely watched until further notice. But if she wishes to be alone, let her. She needs it." The other girl said.
"Ok, I'll tell my men." Gabriel says. "What about the castle, where will she live?" He asked.
"I will be moved to the castle at the other end of my kingdom. It was only used for when we decide to have a change in scenery and got tired of the busy towns. Its just as big and has everything I could possibly need. As for maids and cooks, we have our own set of them living there. They never travel to work in the main castle." I say budding in.
"Ok, will she be moved back into her kingdom now?" He asked.
"No. We think it's best she doesn't come back just yet. She's safer and better off away from everything that happened there." The girl says.
"As for now she must rest and get herself back up to normal. She needs to regain everything she just lost. It might take awhile but she needs to. We can't have an unstable queen or an unstable wife for when she finally finds someone the marry." The second girl said.
"How long do you think it will take?" Gabriel asks.
"It could take years. Or if she's lucky months. She needs to find something to channel her feelings into. Something productive. Make sure she doesn't sip into anything that would be bad." The first girl said.
"Oh. I'll keep a close eye on her." He said.
"Ok, thank you sir. Tell us if there are any changes or if she's ready to take her crown." She said getting up.
"Will do." And with that, they left.
I let out a big breath and continue to fiddle with the glass. I was scared and anxious. I didn't notice Gabriel was still there till he grabbed my hands to stop my fiddling.
"Is it back?" He asked in a low voice. I just kept looking at my lap. He made me look at him and asked me again. "Is it back?" He asked a little louder.
"Is what ba-" I was cut off by him yelling.
"Don't give me that crap! You know what I'm talking about! Your anxiety! Is it back?! Yes or no!" He yelled. I flinched a little and continued to look at my lap. Now fiddling with the hem of my soft, mint green dress.
"No." I said.
"You sure? You can't look at me right now." He said in a calmer voice.
"I'm sure. I know it's not back." I mumble.
"Then why are you fiddling with everything?" He asked.
"A habit I picked up when I did have it. I'm just scared they will come after me next." I admit and tears start to fall again.
"It's ok. Come here." He said and embraced me in a hug and kissed the top of my forehead. "What you need is rest, its late. I'll walk you to your room." He said and we left and made the journey back to my room.
Once back in my room I couldn't sleep. I just cried. I needed something to make it all go away. Just for a moment so I can breath. Next thing I knew I was getting dressed. I didn't know what for but I was going out.
I ended up with a full gold outfit and my black cloak. I left with my hood up and told the guard outside my room I was leaving and that I he could leave his post and to tell Gabriel I don't need guards at my door. I didn't want a guard outside my door. I didn't have one before so I don't need one now.
I left the castle and headed into town. It was quite busy for a weekday and it was so late at night too. It was around eleven or twelve and there were many party goers.
And that's when I saw the way I could escape it all...
