A Sliver of Frost is truly a work of art. Every description cuts with both the precision and elegance of a knife and all the world-building is woven in so seamlessly. Yun Zhi is such a relatable main character with her quest for perfection. Even though she's unnaturally skilled and celestially beautiful, I don't find her hard to like at all because she's so unassuming and free of arrogance or guile. She's a refreshing character in that she works so hard to better herself, but doesn't do so in a way that brings others down--like how she quietly patches up her sister's sky and doesn't mock the mistake even to herself. I enjoyed Yun Zhi and Xiao Che's meeting a lot! You're a master when it comes to delicately adding both mystery and romantic tension in a way that complements the plot instead of overshadowing it. Every interaction reveals so much about the characters and the world. One last time I need to gush over your descriptions. They're so much more than pretty words strung together--they're packed full of emotion and meaning. They not only make me want to live in that world, but even more they inspire me to look for and see that same beauty in my own, in music and the sky. This story will be on my favorites shelf.

Of Caverns and Casters by Laine Nichols and Aria Nichols (@avadel) is a market-ready book that honestly checks all boxes. The blurb and cover draw readers in through its aesthetically pleasing design and well-structured synopsis that provides just enough intrigue without spoiling the experience of reading. Moreover, the artwork utilised throughout the story is eye-catching, and the grammar, plot, and characterisation are strong enough to keep you reading chapter after the next.

Following the direct perspectives of three main characters—Leavi and Sean (both researchers in a plague-ridden city), and Aster (a wizard)—this journey-based story shows how three unlikely characters end up finding their way together.

If I had to pick this book's strongest point, it would be how the story effectively uses imagery and mechanics as a way to craft plot and characterisation. Action is spliced with direct insight to the characters' thoughts. Tension is built through short sentences that sometimes exist as their own paragraph (thereby building a sense of urgency). While more scene-setting segments utilise longer sentences and imagery to craft a landscape in the reader's head. Overall, thought has clearly gone into how to create tone and plot through merely the writing alone.

Where this story fell short a couple of marks (though nothing really note-worthy) are within the grammar, plot, and style sectors (which ultimately led to a slightly lower reader enjoyment). At times, the story seems to stretch a little too long in scenes, with one or two errors in grammar noticed in the first few chapters. Finally, what would colour this story more would be a little more intentional use in figurative language.

Yet despite the few noticed blemishes, these in no way hinder the story. All stories ultimately have room for improvement, but readers will struggle to notice these. If Of Caverns and Casters is not already in your reading list, I strongly suggest you add it.
