"Its completely normal for friends to fuck around, Lisa!"
The same phrase kept resonating in Lisa's head every now and then, in a seemingly taunting tone. She should've never agreed to the brilliance of a favour Taehyung had offered her, specifically when he regarded it as the only way she could get a fair share of experience in dating guys, or even bring about a change in her otherwise dull lifestyle.
It's not always all work and no play, is it?
In all honesty, Lisa wasn't interested in relationships in the first place, because if one might put in her words, dating only meant distraction from her goals.
She wanted to reserve herself for universities like Yale and Harvard, not stick her butt and run after guys who didn't seem convincing enough.
All, except for one, her best friend — Kim Taehyung.
And in other words, the quote-unquote campus playboy.
It might seem so very rhetoric to believe how two people with thoughts that are almost parallel and conflicting are the bestest of friends; well, it is how it has been. It's an arrangement that has worked out ever since they were toddlers to their present twenty-year old selves. From being neighbours to friends, they have always managed to create this unbreakable friends-forever from the start and Lisa has completely obliged the idea and perceived that Taehyung was okay with it too.
However, the friendship in the recent years during their senior year at high school has never been the same. Because now, Taehyung was a changed boy, particular because he had a personality that influenced the girls around him, a queue of girls fanning over him in his DM's, a very noticeable popularity indeed. Being part of the campus band as a lead vocalist credited to the overflowing boundaries of his fame. On the other hand, Lisa was a goal oriented student with the perfect grades, leadership and golden talents. Lisa didn't seem to mind being the centre of attraction but had zero intentions to please others while Taehyung wanted the exact opposite.
Now this posed as a problem. And the newfound arrangement of friends with benefits slash fuck buddies wasn't helping at all. It all started that one Friday movie night when they rested comfortably on the couch, cuddled in the warmth of a comforter, running a movie marathon when a tense sexual scene commenced. It felt awkward since the usual genres preferred (rather, fixed) were romcoms or action movies with cringe loads of gun shooting every now and then, until Taehyung thought it was a nice idea to switch to drama concept for a change.
The discomfort stirred in when there were a few dry humping scenes and a climaxed steamy romance. And later, after a bunch of sex-educational ted talk, Taehyung came up with the brilliance of a scheme that entailed Lisa to take sexual advances from him before she could settle in a relationship with someone.
It went embarrassing, sore and ecstatic the first time, then eased after subsequent trials. It had now become uncontrollable to a point that it was difficult for Lisa to continue with the ongoing facade.
Why? Well because, she couldn't see Taehyung as her best friend anymore. She didn't want to jump into conclusions, she couldn't affirm she liked him that way or not, but certainly she was starting to see him as a man.
A fear of falling for her best friend has started to stir some panic in her head, because not only was it distracting her from her career goals but also the fact that the affection they previously shared was platonic and not in the wilderness of lust — she couldn't recount the number of times having cursed herself for ruining their friendship and the best idea she could ever think of was to simply keep it to herself instead of embarrassingly spilling it out to him.
"You seem to be in a dilemma. That only happens when you're burdened with the council work. Everything alright?" Taehyung asked, his arms wrapped around her naked torso, pulling her closer in his embrace. Normally, Lisa would get tired and worn out, sometimes even pass out after the pleasure sizzled down. But she didn't feel responsive to Taehyung in their fuck-session today, which was new and....questionable.
"Uhm—nothing. Just, I...I'm confused about a problem, I'll figure it out later."
"Were you thinking about a fucking math problem the entire time we fucked? Are you even hearing what you're saying Lis—" Taehyung sounded hurt and dejected, as if he had just been neglected of his glory. Lisa writhed and wriggled out of his grip and playfully hit his head before he jumped onto ridiculous conclusions.
"No silly, not every problem needs to be Math related."
"Shit, so it's Physics? Chemistry—"
"Stop overthinking, would you? Thanks."
"Ah...sorry. So you really don't want to discuss it? Any help if I could, you know." Taehyung lifted her sulking face by placing two of his fingers underneath her chin. In her silence he found the answer. He didn't wish to push her off and decided that maybe talking about it another day would be right.
"By the way, are you free the coming Saturday?" He suddenly asked, interrupting the moments of silence that rested before.
"Well maybe....I guess. Why though?"
"Don't freak out, but...we earned our first ever gig at a local bar."
"You—WHAT?!!!"
"I think I just told you—" Taehyung wasn't able to finish off; not when Lisa had straddled on top of him and snuggled herself into his embrace. Astounded to the quaint feeling he was now experiencing, Taehyung couldn't help but smile in delight at Lisa's daintiness. She had known of his dream, just like the six other members of their school rock band to perform on the foreign ground, a first in their lives — almost seemed like a life of a Disney fairytale where dreams come true.
Which was exactly the reason he chose to be the first to let her know the news, before it was officially announced to everyone on the school bulletin board.
She understood and appreciated his dreams as if they were like her own; his favourite in their friendship. The other girls he had previously dated or slept with before had completely failed to achieve this, mainly the reason why he couldn't believe in relationships at all. Lisa was different. If he were being honest, Taehyung would wonder, shockingly that Lisa was still a virgin before he took her. In his eyes, she was drop-dead gorgeous. Not just the face, but her personality too. He often found himself pondering as to why she never had a boyfriend. He couldn't ever detect any flaws.
"Excuse me I just asked you a question. What's taking you too long to answer?" Taehyung snapped out of his trance to find Lisa staring at him with her wide doll-like eyes, luscious lips ever so kissable shaped into a beautiful pout.
"Oh, nothing. I was waiting for you to calm down. You were screeching as if some wild dog bit you, haha."
"Very funny." She mocked in a sarcastic expression, before fluttering her eyes to remember her question again. But her thoughts soon clouded up in haze as Taehyung pulled her closer onto him, her soft lips smashed against his supple ones.
"I just want you to come, please don't say no." he said in between the kiss. "You coming to support me would really mean a lot to me."
And as promised, the D-day was finally here. Seated on one of the few spare tables in the already preoccupied at the local bar, Lisa watched over, waiting for Taehyung to show up on stage. The seven boys, their septet they called BANGTAN, who held the pride of their school slowly made their way on stage. Some distant, off-synced cheering was heard across the ambience of the club, majorly a few girls from their school premise and a few claps from the elders admiring the new faces.
The stage didn't go as planned — a few technical defects caused the audio to switch continually between the music and static. Moreover, the microphones arranged from the staff couldn't survive for long which completely set the mood off. Somehow they managed to put up a good stage, although some of the older audiences rolling their eyes to the discomforting noises penetrating their ears.
"It's crazy, don't they have an ounce of respect left towards our school to just stop performing anymore?" One of the mean girls, Minjoo sneered as she chugged her fourth drink for the evening. "No one looks interested in the music at all, they're nothing special. Everyone's only listening to them because they're the only band on campus."
"If that's really the case, Minjoo-ssi, why not go take their place on stage with your girl gang instead? Its easier to judge and rob anyone off their efforts, but I bet you don't have any guts to go perform there. And besides, shouldn't have bothered dragging your snobby self over here to just badmouth them behind their backs." Lisa finished with a skeptical scoff.
"Can't take the criticism Ms Council Prefect? Or shall I call you Taehyung's slut? Of course you'd be here after stealing my ex boyfriend only to defend him. But get that shit right into your head girlie, you flat ass will never be enough to impress him; he will be back crawling my way and beg me to take him back."
"Its justifiable as to why my best friend left you a long time ago — can't stand the sight of a pathetic bitch known to switch sides and twist her words in her benefit—" Lisa spoke through gritted teeth, pleasured at the anger thus forming on Minjoo's resting-bitch face. She looked down at her friend Minnie in disappointment, after being dragged a few steps away to avoid a chaos.
"What are you doing Lili?"
"What? She doesn't get to question the boys' talents, specifically when she doesn't have one percent of diligence unlike they have. And why pollute the others with the weird prejudice she still has against Taehyung, when she is all sweet and flirty with him right on the face?"
"Exactly, Lisa. That is what I am trying to point out. She's half drunk. Don't expect being surprised when you find her praising the boys right after they get off stage and grind against them. You have a correct objective but the wrong approach; confronting her like that in a faltering sober state would barely make an effect." She explained.
Lisa parted her lips to argue back, but soon let it slide earning a sigh of relief from her friend. And just like Minnie rightfully explained, Minjoo lived up to the assumptions. With the smiles all fake and merry, she praised the boys in a cheeky tone, completely opposed to her words from a few minutes ago.
"What a two-faced bitch." Lisa muttered under her breath, when the septet joined her table.
"We know from how fake her smile was. Thanks for reserving a table for us, Lisa!" Namjoon thanked her. "Finally I can have two shots of tequila, one good thing after messing up on stage." Jungkook groaned followed by Jimin. They obviously looked regretful, as the others tried to cheer up.
"Absolutely not! You guys did great for your first gig." Minnie was the first to say.
"Let's not take the blame solely on ourselves, we know first gigs are usually a failure before we pick up an experience. We have all agreed to be in this together." Yoongi and Namjoon added.
"Remember, the show must go on." Everyone nodded at Lisa.
"Wo, this beat is so catchy! I'll be right back after shaking my booty, don't wait up for me." Hoseok excused himself to join the dance stage on the second floor where the evening DJ started playing some popular dance songs. Following him were Namjoon, Jimin and Yoongi as Jungkook crashed at the bar counter to order himself another drink.
"Oppa! We're meeting after I don't know, three weeks I suppose? I heard you were taking up an undergrad course on management?"
"Yeah, my ambition is to be the CEO of an entertainment company some day, bangtan will be the first group I will launch. Presumably even change the name to something like—BTS? So the people will think its behind the scene but they will eventually come to know it means 'beyond the scene' lol."
"Thats a lot of future thinking! I won't be surprised if you name your company JINHIT corp or something."
"Do we share the same braincells? Cause the name is literally on my list!" The two laughed following which Jin cracked up a list of some new dad-jokes he had written up. Lisa was like a little sister to him, the only one who would never get bored of his silly jokes. The ones now left on the table were Minnie who was already busy texting someone, Taehyung who stared in envy as Lisa chuckled away with Seokjin.
"Tae oppa, will you move aside so I can get up— my God, why are you glaring at Lili like that?!" Minnie asked shocked, although Taehyung chose to ignore her words. Getting no response, the girl only sighed before she left by herself.
Normally, Taehyung not someone who gets all wound up and irritated but somehow, if anybody cared to give a notice would obviously get intimidated to find him unusually seething in anger and frustration — all caused by his best friend (with benefits) now casually talking with his hyung that has gotten into his nerves, the deepest parts of it. That wasn't all; when Jin excused himself to attend a call, Lisa had the audacity to chat with some other dude from their school who looked as if he had the biggest crush on her.
No, Taehyung wasn't mad with Lisa chatting and talking to other guys. He had long known his best friend had more guy friends than girls; she was the cool and hardworking type who usually didn't fit within the stereotypes of the girls of the neighbourhood. So yes, he never minded that. What caused the bubble of his anger to burst was the fact that she had been talking to everyone but him, as if she were seemingly ignoring him.
Grimacing at the sight of Lisa swaying her lips to the slow jazzy beat with the same dude who was trying to hit on her earlier, he rolled his eyes expressively. Lisa, on the other hand was having the time of her night. She had never felt this enthusiastic for a party before and wanted to make her first time clubbing worthwhile. She danced with some of her friends and schoolmates and enjoyed the merriment that the buzzing atmosphere brought for a fleeting amount of time.
The enthusiasm was short lived, mainly because of two reasons; one, she was disgusted by the smell of sweat and alcohol that made her feel suffocated and second, even after being surrounded with a number of familiar and unfamiliar faces, she yearned only for the one that made her feel complete. Lisa hadn't caught the realisation that she hadn't had a proper conversation with Taehyung until now, perhaps because Minjoo had ruined her mood earlier and she was excited to go clubbing that Taehyung nearly slipped out of her mind. She soon found herself looking for Taehyung and heading out was prolly the best thing she'd opt for.
Wandering further away from the crowd with the intensely booming music soon fading away, Lisa reached the rooftop terrace of the bar which had relatively sparse population chattering away with drinks in their hand. Soon she found her best friend she had been looking for — leaned against the railing of the terrace and a certain death stick clasped between his fingers.
Her brows now furrowed, she charged towards him and snatched the cigarette from his hand to incinerate it, earning a surprise glare from him.
"What do you think you're doing? Its not cool to pollute your lungs with tar."
"Wow, so you did realise I exist. Better late than never I suppose. That fucking prude did bore you at the end."
"What do you mean?" Lisa whipped her head close to him to inhale a tinge of alcohol mixed with the cigarette fumes.
Now an octave higher, he started mocking her in an impudent tone. "Yeah, that low-witted jock, I can't even bring myself to remember the name."
"Can you try not to sound impetuous? I don't have the slightest hint of why you're dragging the poor guy—"
"He was trying to hit on you and you obviously let him, choosing him over me. Like you have been ignoring me the entire evening."
"So what if he was trying to hit on me? Why do you suddenly care about my love life anyway? In every normal setting as it may not sit right with you, every man gets a fair chance to charm a woman. Besides, isn't that why your entire 'advancements' were based on, why you fucked me that very night in the first place?"
Taehyung glossed over, chewing on his lip on her absurd questioning. "Wait, Lisa. I am not getting—"
"There's nothing left to hide, Taehyung. I have heard you one too many times, vaunt in all your glory about the player you are, how you are the best every girl has ever had. I know you pity me, which is why you offered the entire friends with benefits deal to begin with."
Taehyung couldn't help but blink for the first few minutes, flabbergasted to form a coherent response.
"No. No. That's... not true."
"Then what is?" She thickly gulped; she knew deep inside her heart she was starting to catch feelings. And she knew Taehyung wouldn't like that; he didn't like to burden himself in a committed relationship when everything for him was just casual sex.
"Truth is...I..."
Silence.
The only voice stirring up was the tick-tock of the wristwatch Lisa was then wearing.
Lisa could feel her heart thrumming loudly against her chest; breathing erratically in anticipation of what his reply would be. In the end of nearly two minutes and counting seconds, she had the answer. He could only shamelessly stand there dumbfounded as she heavily exhaled, collecting herself before leaving.
"Keep your excuses to yourself. I think I have my answer. Thank you, I guess then."
Lisa turned to leave, but the second all she knew was Taehyung briskly groping her in his ironclad hold.
"Please...don't leave me. I know what you've been meaning to hear from me, honestly I wish so too. But I am nowhere close to what you look for in a man."
"What are you trying to tell me then, Tae?"
He let his hold loose and she could finally see his vulnerable, emotional fave gleaming in the moonlight. The soft, weak hearted Taehyung always cast behind the shadow of his bold, confident self, his explicitness.
"You are intelligent, sharp minded, a cute little humble being. You are like the total girlfriend material yet you have high standards, preferences for the perfect one you can call your Mr Right. I can no where imagine you to end up with an easy-going dork like me, even if I admit that I...uh...I...I'm in love with you."
Taehyung's lips quivered when he realised how perfectly the words i love you fitted on all of those rom-coms Lisa would always watch whenever he came over to visit. He couldn't recount the number of times he had imagined how beautiful her eyes would shine and her warm crescent smile would adorn her lips when he'd spell those words.
He wanted her to see the longing and pureness of his eyes, the way they looked at her in utter delight to admire her crinkling eyes as she'd always laugh, making his heart flutter. His eyes began to tear up as he presumed he already made a fool of himself. He stepped away from her wanting to disappear out of sight.
"Wait, Tae." A silvery voice called out and his movements seized. He could hear Lisa walk near him and once she was standing right in front of him, her lips curved into the crescent smile he had always imagined in his dreams.
"Maybe you should know that feel the same too." She whispered lowly, before reaching on her toes to capture his lips into a quick kiss. Having kissed a number of times before, this kiss seemed just like the first time he had kissed her, on the couch that night — hesitant, delicate and heartwarming.
Taehyung was certainly a lovesick fool to believe Lisa held the same spark in her eyes for any other guy like the one she had for him. Maybe the course of events was complicated, but in the end she was glad that Taehyung could finally take notice of the feelings she possessed for him. More than any best friend (with benefits) would.
At least now the other guys were already out of her Mr Right list because from now onwards he had the right to call her his.
"Are you sure you don't want a ride home?"
"Oh, I'll be crashing at my cousin's place tonight, we have our pending weekend plans. My cab is here." Taehyung posed a frown at Lisa's reply, not wanting to let go of his girlfriend.
"Call me once you've reached safely, okay? And I will be the one to pick you up when you return back, no more arguments."
"You— 'kay, fine now. Stop tugging at my wrist now at least?"
Taehyung dramatically sighed before loosening his hold as Lisa mumbled a meek thanks. He walked her over to her pickup point where the cab was waiting and Lisa held his bicep to lean over and peck his cheek again before departing for real.
"I guess the next time we will be meeting is on our first date. As a couple." A smile crept along Taehyung's lips as he let the words out and Lisa beamed as well.
"Yes indeed, Kim Taehyung. I love you too."
