Chapter 30

a/n: sorry it took me so long to update! life's being a lil shit sometimes, but here u go! :D

From the very first moment Jaehyun stepped into the cafe, Chaeyoung's eyes were fixated on the bag he brought with him and her instincts were telling her that it was another gift for her.

After arriving back from her one-week vacation with her fiancé, Chaeyoung finally responded to one of Jaehyun's many messages to her.

Jaehyun: let's meet when you get back

He picked her favorite cafe and the weekend to meet, but Chaeyoung figured that it'd be better to meet him during her lunch break since she was only going to have a half-day of work on that day. Jaehyun had apologized that he was going to be a little late, and Chaeyoung ordered first to not waste the time.

When he arrived though, he had a gentle smile on his face as he mentioned how she had ordered his favorite dessert for him. She wasn't sure if this was all an effect of being someone who was already taken, or she had been too oblivious in the past, but her senses had suddenly become so sensitive that she could instantly notice the underlying message behind that tone, that smile and just the content of what he said itself.

Nevertheless, Chaeyoung displayed a small smile and corrected her friend. "Didn't even know that was your favorite. I just ordered randomly."

Jaehyun's smile briefly faltered at her response but he recovered a moment later. Clearing his throat, Jaehyun turned to the gift bag he brought with him, the corners of his lips pulled into a wide smile as he placed it onto the table and gently pushed toward her.

"What's this?" she asked.

He shrugged. "Just a small gift. I thought that maybe you were mad at me. You didn't reply to me. You didn't answer my call."

Jaehyun took a box out of the bag and carefully placed it in front of her. A frown began to form on her face as she stared at it.

"Just something to cheer you up, I guess?"

"Jaehyun, this is—"

"Got you a limited edition Tiffany watch," he said, opening the box.

When he took the watch into his hand and tried to take her hand to have her try it on, Chaeyoung slowly pulled her hand away from the table, sighing heavily. "Jaehyun... I can't accept this."

A moment passed. "Why not?"

"This is..." Her frown deepened before she gave a brief glance toward the box she placed just right beside her feet. Chaeyoung looked back at the watch, then to her friend. "What exactly is this for? My birthday's passed, and it's not anytime soon either."

Jaehyun's thumb gently brushed against the watch. "You don't like this? I can get you a different—"

"It's not about whether I like it or not," Chaeyoung sighed. "Actually, I have something for you."

His face lightened up, the corners of his lips slowly turned upward when Chaeyoung lifted the big box and placed it onto the table.

"What's this?" he chuckled.

Chaeyoung inhaled softly and gently opened the box, containing all the gifts Jaehyun gifted her in New York, from luxurious jewelries, shoes, handbags, dresses and the perfume. "I've opened a few boxes, like the handbag and shoes, but I haven't worn them." Then, she looked him straight in the eyes. "The perfume's still untouched."

Ever since the day Jaehyun appeared with a bouquet of flowers outside her house, hugging her and commenting about the perfume she had on, Chaeyoung had an unsettling feeling within her. The perfume she had sprayed on was the one she personally bought for herself. When she received the perfume as a gift from Jaehyun, she had assumed that it was only a coincidence that he'd gotten her the exact perfume. But with how things turned out, not one day went by without her thinking of how disturbed she felt with the perfume Jaehyun bought.

Jaehyun's smile vanished as he stared at all the gifts in the box. "You're returning these?"

She bit her bottom lip lightly as she nodded her head. "I really appreciate these, Jaehyun. I really do," she smiled kindly and carefully, she continued, "they're all lovely gifts. But I think you can give them away to someone else who deserves them more than I do."

"Someone else?" He leaned back in his seat. "What makes you think someone else deserves these and not you?"

Chaeyoung stayed silent as she watched the annoyance rising on her friend's face. This was her friend for years. Though they weren't as close as they were back when they were kids, he was still one of those friends that she was comfortable enough to joke around with, to freely laugh together with. But it wasn't until recently that she had begun to realize that perhaps, she was alone in thinking that they were only friends and could only stay as friends, nothing more.

"I bought these in the thoughts of you, Chaeng," Jaehyun said. "Everything that I gave you, is only for you. I'm not going to take these back with me," Jaehyun put the box away and leaned forward in his seat, his arms resting on the table. "Nor am I going to give them away to someone else."

Chaeyoung exhaled softly, avoiding his eyes when he started to search for hers.

Jaehyun tried to reach for her hand, but she carefully pulled it and rested it on her lap. She heard a soft sigh from him.

"Chaeng... You know you can tell me everything, right?" he asked softly. "Even if you don't say it, I know it."

Her brows furrowed before she looked him in the eyes. "What do you mean?"

Jaehyun's gaze was firm. "He made you do it, didn't he? He asked you to return my gifts."

Jungkook's face surfaced in her mind. The image of him telling her to return Jaehyun's gifts roamed her head. As she let a sulky Jungkook wander around her mind on a loop, a chuckle subconsciously escaped her because it never happened. Sure, Jungkook was upset with Jaehyun's constant effort to reach her, but he never knew about the gifts. In fact, he had asked her to talk to Jaehyun to avoid misunderstandings.

"He did not," Chaeyoung said after her soft chuckle ceased. "He had no idea about these gifts. I'm here on my own choice. I'm returning these because it's my decision to do so."

The look on Jaehyun's face clearly told her that he refused to believe it and the scoff that left him after just proved it. "Do you take me for a fool? You're forced to do this. Chaeng, if you want to get out of this, I'll help you."

"Get out?" Her face creased and she let out a dry chuckle. "I don't want that. I don't want to get out."

"Chaeng—"

"I'm happy with him, Jaehyun." Her fingers reached for her engagement ring, rubbing it gently as though it was there to calm her. "Why would I want to get out if I am perfectly happy with him?"

"How can you be happy in an arranged marriage relationship? You think I forgot that you mentioned how your families are mostly formed because of arranged marriages? And now you are in the same situation."

Her gaze fell toward the engagement ring wrapped around her finger. She remembered it like yesterday, how Jungkook had held her hand and put the ring on her. She still remembered clearly how her parents never spoke ill of him and how she was basically the apple of his parents' eyes too. The memories of those times when Jungkook tried to get her to agree to marry him were still fresh in her mind. It never left her mind the number of times she rejected him every single time he showed up. Despite the multiple times he tried, there wasn't exactly a time where he actually forced her to do it.

"You're right," she nodded. "This is an arranged marriage. But I had the choice, Jaehyun. And I chose to be with him."

"Only because you were forced—"

"No one actually forced me to marry him," she cut him off. "My parents might have wished for me to marry him, and tried to convince me to do it, but in the end, it was my choice. I make my own decision. I chose to marry him. I chose to stay in this relationship because I want to be with him," she said as her eyes dropped to her ring. "Jaehyun, I'm... really happy with Jungkook. And I..." she wetted her lips, her cheeks warming and a small smile began to pull at her lips as she said her next words, "I want to spend the rest of my life with him."

Jaehyun inhaled deeply, pressing his lips together into a thin line and his dimples showed up. He looked at her long, his eyes held a thousand emotions in them and admittedly, a little part of her felt bad about this situation.

"Be honest, Chaeyoung," Jaehyun said after a while. "Have I never made you happy?"

Chaeyoung frowned softly. "If you never made me happy, we wouldn't even be friends."

"If I can make you happy, why can't we be more than friends?"

The frown on her countenance deepened before she let out a soft chuckle as her brows furrowed. "If you want to go by that logic, I would be more than friends with everyone I am friends with." Jaehyun opened his mouth to counter that statement but she beat him to it.

"I would never want to lose you as my friend," she gave a soft smile. "It would mean so much if you understand."

His mood was down during the whole day because of the current issue he had to face regarding one of his clients. The long meeting he had to address the issue and have a discussion with his team to come up with a solution was draining, but the simple text he received from his fiancée was enough to improve his mood.

Park Chaeyoung❤️: i'm bored :(

Jungkook tried not to smile as he quickly replied 'come here'. Then, her reply came fast.

Park Chaeyoung❤️: rather at home ;)

A chuckle almost left him. Suppressing his smirk, Jungkook excused himself for a minute to give her a call. As soon as she answered it with that gentle hum that he liked so much, Jungkook lowered his voice and said, "You can't. Not by yourself."

"Why not?"

Jungkook bit his lower lip. "Not unless I'm the one who makes you."

There was silence that went longer than three seconds before she bursted out laughing on the other line. "Can I really go there?" she asked after her laughter ceased.

"I told you, you can come over anytime you want." Jungkook pushed his hand into the pocket and grinned as he looked at his feet.

"Someone's going to chase me out for not making an appointment to see her Mr. Jeon," she muttered.

"No one's going to chase you out anymore. I made sure of that," he said with a roll of his eyes. "And I'm your Mr. Jeon. Not anyone else's."

Chaeyoung didn't say anything and he listened to the soft sound of her breathing.

"I want you here," he said softly with a sigh. "Come over."

There was a short pause. And then, a giggle. "Say please."

Jungkook couldn't help but chuckle. "Who's asking now? Me?"

"My God, never have I thought I'd see a giggly Jeon Jungkook, blushing like a shy highschool girl."

Jungkook's smile instantly vanished upon hearing Yugyeom on his side with an unimpressed look on his face.

"The fuck you want?" he grumbled with a deep frown.

"How long are you going to be on the phone flirting?" Yugyeom sighed heavily. "We have a big issue to handle and our meeting is not done yet!"

He shut his eyes in frustration and when he opened his eyes, he glared at his assistant. "One minute."

"If one minute is up and you're still going, might as well cut this meeting short and go get a damn room with your fiancée," Yugyeom said and walked back to join the rest of the team.

Jungkook pressed the phone back to his ear. "Sorry about that."

"You're busy," Chaeyoung said with a soft chuckle. "Never mind. I'll just wait for you at your place. In your room. On your bed." She giggled and whispered, "Naked."

Jungkook tucked his tongue against his cheek as he inhaled sharply. "You can't do this to me right now, Chaeyoung."

"Do what?" she asked, and he could literally see in his head the image of her innocently asking him that despite her obvious intention to tease him.

"You're a damn tease," Jungkook sighed. "Don't wait for me at home. I want you here."

"But you're busy," she snorted.

"I won't be busy in a couple more minutes," he said and briefly peeked at his shoulder where Yugyeom was narrowing his eyes at him. "So come over."

Chaeyoung hummed for a moment. "Say please," she teased.

"Come over please."

She hummed. "Doesn't sound convincing."

Jungkook bit on his bottom lip when he felt himself smiling. "Please, come over."

"I don't want to interrupt you working so—"

"You're already doing that," he grumbled playfully, causing her to laugh. "Come over."

"Just go back to work. You'll find me in your room naked on your bed when you come home after work."

Jungkook shut his eyes tightly, considering the option and admitting in his head that it sounded like a good idea. What else would be better than coming home to her after such a long draining day at work? But the thing was, he wanted to see her now. "Park Chaeyoung?"

"Hm?"

"Are you going to be responsible if I get a speeding ticket?"

"Aw, do you want me there so bad?"

"Baby, I want you here now, so please, I beg you, please come over and wait for me in my office."

She laughed melodically at the other line. "Can't figure out if that sounds demanding or pleading."

It took almost an hour to finally end the meeting and Jungkook took long strides toward his office but a frown soon fell onto his face when he opened the door to an empty office. Chaeyoung was not in sight. Jungkook swiped his thumb across the screen of his phone as he closed the door and walked away with a sigh.

If he found out that Chaeyoung was stopped once again from going into his office, maybe he would need to start proposing to Chaeyoung to start working with him instead.

Jungkook lifted his head just in time to see the receptionist giggling and when he looked to where the receptionist was laughing, he saw Chaeyoung covering her mouth, laughing together. When she noticed him, her eyes slightly widened and her smile stretched on her face.

He sighed softly and when he reached her, his hand smoothly slid toward her waist and without a second thought, he tugged her close and leaned in to plant a kiss on her lips. When he pulled back, Chaeyoung's eyes stared back at him unblinkingly, her cheeks painted with blush.

"Hi," he smiled softly.

Chaeyoung began to blink. "Hi..."

"I thought I asked you to wait in my office," he said, his eyes taking a few seconds to move away from her lips. When he met her eyes, his brows slowly furrowed. "Did someone ask you to wait here?"

Chaeyoung shook her head as she softly muttered 'no'. "I thought I'd be extra bored waiting for your meeting to end, so I thought I should just wait here."

Then, she cleared her throat and tried to gently push him away but his hold on her waist only went firm. Her eyes briefly glanced here and there before they went back to him. Without moving her lips, Chaeyoung widened her eyes and shyly muttered, "People are watching, Jungkook."

Jungkook briefly looked away from his fiancée and noticed how the receptionist had awkwardly tried to stay focused into the screen of the monitor in front of her, a couple employees quickly walking away when he turned to them, Yugyeom's jaw dropping before his eyes that had been filled with irritance during the meeting turned into a teasing look, and Jihye who quickly looked down and stomped away when their eyes met.

Jungkook turned back to his fiancée and pulled a smile. "Missed you," he said in a lowered voice.

Chaeyoung narrowed her eyes before she whispered, "Are you okay?"

"Are you hungry?"

She pouted for a second. "I already ate. But I brought some food for you." She gently pulled the bag of food she had placed on the receptionist's desk.

"Perfect." Jungkook nodded and his smile widened as he took her hand in his and the bag in his other hand. "Shall we?"

She looked at him for a moment, her face clearly showing confusion and concern. Then, her eyes downcast and she smiled softly before looking at him again with that sweet, soft smile adorning her face, nodding and leaning into him when he pulled her to go to his office.
