Chapter 25
"Are you sure we're going the right way?"
"This is the third time you asked that question, Chaeyoung." Jungkook sighed as he passed her bag to his other hand that was already holding his own bag to take her hand. "And my answer will not change," he said as he pulled her up while she climbed up the huge rock.
"We've been walking for over 15 minutes and the sky is going dark," she grunted and let his hand go once she stood steadily. "And I've been following you blindly and we still haven't found that 'help'. So excuse me for asking the same question over and over again."
"We just need to exit this forest and we'll get that help."
"I think I asked you the wrong question." Chaeyoung looked around anxiously, realizing how far they had walked. "Do you even know where you're going?"
Jungkook pointed to the ground. "Look. That's clearly a trail. Someone must have used this path so I'm sure we'll find the exit by following it."
She stared at the trail he was referring to. Sure, it did look like a pathway but it didn't look like it was recently used either. It must have been at least a decade of neglect by the people who used to walk that path since nature had already claimed its territory, leaving some parts of the trail to be barely recognizable beneath the overgrown grasses and wild plants.
"I think if we actually followed the road by foot, for 15 minutes of walking, we would find someone, anyone who can help."
Jungkook took a deep breath and sighed heavily. "Then why are you here? Why did you follow me if you think you can find any help by using that road?"
Chaeyoung rolled her eyes. "Because you insist on taking this path! And I don't want to be left alone. I don't even have any idea where you're taking me." She groaned as she looked around and saw no way out. "You know, I'm starting to think that you're kidnapping me."
Scoffing, Jungkook shook his head and asked, "You follow me and you call that kidnapping?"
"You tricked me into following you."
"I tricked you?" Jungkook asked in disbelief, tilting his head.
Chaeyoung stopped walking when he did. Crossing her arms, she waited until he turned to look at her. "You created fear so you didn't have to force me to follow you."
He stared at her for a moment before he let out a chuckle. "Go back to the car then."
"I don't want to be alone," she pouted and she noticed how his eyes briefly flicked to her mouth before he looked away.
As they walked deeper into the woods, and the sound of crickets beginning to get louder, Chaeyoung turned around but could no longer see where they came from. It got darker and a moment later, she heard a subtle sound of thunder. "Oh god, it's going to rain."
"Less talking, keep moving."
She scoffed and mocked him from behind, but it was as though he had eyes at the back of his head that he suddenly turned. "What?" She feigned innocence and Jungkook briefly narrowed his eyes at her. "Get moving, Mr. Jeon," she smiled and gestured to him to start moving. "Please, lead the way."
Jungkook only shook his head and started to move again with her following from behind. Just then, Chaeyoung's ears registered rustling sounds from behind her that her heartbeat quickened, and without a second thought, her hand reached for him but could only manage to grab the back of his shirt before she slipped.
It was all thanks to Jungkook's steady stance, his high quality shirt and her tight grip that she wasn't already rolling and tumbling down the small hill. Jungkook whipped his head with furrowed brows. "You okay?"
Chaeyoung merely nodded before she whispered, "I heard some rustling."
He switched his bag to his other hand, now holding their bags together before he wrapped his hand around hers. Jungkook looked over her shoulder for a moment. "It's about to rain so it must be the wind."
"Are you sure it's not a monster?"
"There is no monster," he sighed softly, intertwining their hands.
"That's gotta be a wild animal," she whispered, squeezing his hand tightly as she imagined a wild boar lurking in the woods or some bears just watching them before launching an attack.
"It's not," he assured her and pulled her closer. "Just stay close to me."
Chaeyoung pulled her hand that he was holding as she froze in her spot. "If it's not then why are you asking me to stay close to you?" She whipped around in panic before turning to him with widened eyes. "Does that mean—"
Jungkook groaned. "It just means I don't want your clumsy ass to fall to your death, alright?"
Her jaw dropped and she didn't know whether she was laughing or scoffing. "Wow. That's so comforting."
"Glad I could be a source of comfort," he replied flatly and Chaeyoung rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"Dream on," she responded. Nevertheless, she let Jungkook take her hand back in his as she silently admitted in her head that he really indeed was her source of comfort.
Jungkook snorted softly. "Now let's move."
They began to walk again with her clutching to his arm despite how tight he was holding her hand. A minute later, the rain started to drizzle for a few seconds before it turned into a heavy rain. Their steps quickened and Chaeyoung only focused on following where Jungkook stepped on without looking exactly where they were going until he finally stopped.
She looked up at him before she realized that they were facing a house. "Oh my god," she breathed.
Jungkook nodded. "Yes."
If it wasn't raining, Chaeyoung would have kneeled on the ground and thanked the divine power. This was the light at the end of a tunnel.
Jungkook pulled her hand as he rushed to walk up the small steps leading up to the front door. He dropped the bags onto the floor and looked around. Chaeyoung finally felt that she was safe from any creepy creatures from the forest and hoped that the person living in the house would provide them shelter or at least, get them in contact with anybody for the car problem.
Just as she was ready to knock on the door, Jungkook pressed his hands onto the window right beside the door as he tried to peek inside. Chaeyoung slapped his shoulder.
"Can you behave?" she whispered. "No one's gonna help a peeping tom." Chaeyoung knocked on the door thrice.
Instead of listening to her, he decided to turn the doorknob roughly before she slapped his hand away. "Stop that."
"No one's inside," he stated.
"And?" she tilted her head before rolling her eyes. "Maybe someone's upstairs. None of us knows." She kept on knocking on the door, hoping that someone was really inside and could help them in any way possible.
On her way to her third try to knock on the door, Jungkook suddenly went back down and got soaked back up in the rain, turning around as though he was looking for something. Then, he grabbed a rock about the size of his fist and quickly went back next to her. Before she could stop him, the window next to the door broke after one hit from the rock in his hand, and all she could hear was the glass shattering and her own loud gasp, the heavy rain muted in her ears.
"Are you fucking insane?!" She pushed him away from the window and seized the rock from him, throwing it away to the ground. "What happens to 'knock the door and say hello'?!"
Jungkook ignored her as he stuck his hand inside the hole of the window and tried to open the door from the inside. Chaeyoung whipped her head around in panic, hoping that no one caught her fiancé behaving exactly how a robber would to a stranger's house. The door opened with a click and Jungkook slightly hissed as his arm accidentally grazed against the sharp broken window glass.
Chaeyoung froze as she watched the door slowly swing open and Jungkook turned left and right before he brought their bags inside. She didn't move from where she was, and Jungkook looked at her with confused brows.
"What are you doing?" he asked. "Get in quickly."
"What are you doing?" she asked back in return. "Get out of there."
Jungkook sighed and let go of the bags. He approached her and took her hand, pulling her inside but Chaeyoung fought to stay outside.
"Do you realize that you're invading someone's— hey!" Chaeyoung swung her legs aggressively when he bent down and lifted her up onto his shoulder. "Let me down!"
He slammed the door to a close with his foot and finally put her down.
"I'm leaving."
"No, you're not," he gripped her wrist.
"Yes I am, you intruder!" Her effort to open his fist was vain, but only after a few failed tries that she finally stopped. "We can't be here, Jungkook. This is wrong. This is someone's property and we're being intruders."
"Are you blind? This place looks abandoned."
Chaeyoung turned around and her brows furrowed further because nothing in the house made it look like it was abandoned at all, but the feeling surrounding it seemed to be it. Nevertheless, Chaeyoung tried to get Jungkook to leave the house. "Let's just wait outside."
"You're fucking shivering, Chaeyoung. Do you want to freeze to death outside?" He pushed his wet hair to the back and stared at her for a moment before he groaned. "I promise we'll leave tomorrow morning. But for now, let's just stay here. It's almost dark outside and it's raining."
Chaeyoung continued to look outside. The downpour was heavier and indeed darker outside. And even when they were already inside the house she felt the chill, but it was probably because of the hole in the window.
"What if someone comes home?" she turned to ask him and then, her eyes caught something at the wall over his shoulder. There were two guns attached to the wall and her heart froze. "We're gonna die."
"We're not."
"They got guns!" She pointed at the wall and Jungkook turned to look at them. "They're going to shoot us once they find out that we've entered their house without permission."
"I'll take responsibility. Alright?"
"How?" Then, what happened in the club raided her already troubled mind. "Are you going to shoot them first?"
"Do I look like I murder for fun?" he asked in frustration.
"Don't tell me you're planning to be a stupid hero and cover me when they shoot us." Chaeyoung glared at him. Part of her feared that he wouldn't hesitate to do exactly that seeing how he had bravely held the knife with his bare hand when the damned perverted stranger tried to attack.
She could see a hint of a smile on his face. "That won't happen," he assured her. "No shooting will happen too."
"But what if it happens?" she asked anxiously as her eyes went back to the guns on the wall. "Those guns don't look like toys. If your plan's to eventually leave me here on my own, I should—"
"I won't leave you," he cut her off softly.
Despite his constant assurance, Chaeyoung couldn't erase the worry building within her. Her forehead creased as she let her eyes roamed about the house. Her mind provided her with worrying images of them being held at gunpoint.
"Let's not think about that for now because look around you, there's nobody else in this house but us."
He switched on the lights and Chaeyoung took the time to scan the house from where she was standing, too afraid to move an inch. Meanwhile Jungkook had already begun to step away from her, toward the staircase.
"Where the hell are you going now, Jungkook?"
"I'm going to check upstairs."
Her jaw dropped in disbelief. "For what? Stay here. All we need is a shelter and we already got it after we invaded this house. What do you need to explore the house for?"
Jungkook disappeared even before she finished talking and she was left all alone in the living room of a stranger's house, wondering what her fate would be if the door was opened by the owner. A minute later, she heard footsteps coming down the stairs and she was immediately calmed the moment Jungkook appeared.
She held herself from screaming at him in frustration. "I thought you wouldn't leave me? Not even a minute after you said that, you left me here alone!"
Jungkook pressed his lips together and muttered a soft apology. "There are three bedrooms upstairs, two bathrooms. Water's running fine."
"What's the purpose of telling me all this?"
"You need to get changed," he said. "Get a warm shower."
"No thanks." She shook her head. "I don't want to get caught butt naked showering at a stranger's house."
"You're soaked, Chaeyoung," he sighed. "I'm sure you don't want to end up sick, so stop being stubborn."
"No."
"Chaeyoung," he sighed heavily.
"I'll probably end up dead before I get sick."
Another heavy sigh escaped him. "Okay, at least, just get changed."
"No."
Jungkook looked done as his jaw went tight after a moment of staring at her. "Fine. Do your own thing."
She tilted her chin up. "Fine."
"Don't fucking complain if you get sick."
"I will not," she scoffed.
Right after he turned around with the bags and was at least ten steps away from her, lightning appeared and a thunder roared in the sky, and Chaeyoung squeaked and ran toward Jungkook just right before the fuse was blown and the whole house went dark. She heard a subtle chuckle coming from him when she clung onto his arm as he continued to walk and Chaeyoung had to fight the urge of arguing with him.
Once they were upstairs, Jungkook led her to a master bedroom and placed her bag on the floor before he lit up a candle for her. She was told once again to get changed and dry herself up with her towel while he went to see if he could heat up some water for her in the kitchen.
"No need to heat up anything."
"You're freezing."
"Don't leave me here," she said.
He looked like he wanted to say more but nodded instead. "I'll be in the next room."
Chaeyoung finally let go of his arm and after he left, she hesitated on closing the door. Deciding that it was kind of dark anyway even with the light from the candle, she let the door open. If anything happened, she could just storm out of the room easily.
She crouched down to check on the clothes she got and frowned as the first shirt that she grabbed from the bag was wet. "No..." Her soft no's came out in a loop as she took out more clothes from the bag but figured out that each garment was wet. Chaeyoung sat there on the floor with her shoulders dropped, thinking how on earth the day got even worse.
With a soft sigh, Chaeyoung got up and went out of the room with her bag to get to Jungkook. The door of the room that he was in was opened and Chaeyoung immediately walked toward it before she stopped at the entrance.
Jungkook was facing a long mirror that was facing the door where Chaeyoung could see herself and she stood there silently, watching Jungkook only in his boxer briefs as he was drying his hair off. She slowly swallowed the lump in her throat as her eyes wandered about his topless body, the beautifully sculpted muscles looked even alluring in the dimly lit room. Her gaze briefly flicked toward the muscles in his thighs and calves before Jungkook pulled up his sweater pants.
"Like what you see?"
Chaeyoung's eyes snapped toward the mirror, expecting him to be looking at her with a smirk, yet his eyes were on his sweater in his hands.
The corners of her lips slightly lifted as she walked into the room and went to stand in front of him. She looked him in the eyes for a moment before her gaze dropped to his bare chest, tilting her head to stare at the dips and curves of his abs. Chaeyoung calmly breathed in as she brought her eyes back up to his. Slowly, she leaned toward him, her mouth near his ear. "I've seen better."
When she pulled back with a smirk, Jungkook was not amused as his gaze was dark and he pushed his tongue against his cheek, looking away for a second. He scoffed after clenching his jaw in annoyance and she enjoyed seeing his reaction.
"Why haven't you changed yet?" he asked after putting on his sweater over his head.
Chaeyoung took one step back and lifted her bag. "Everything got wet. Except for some of my underwear that I kept in another waterproof bag," she shrugged. "Wouldn't make a difference if I changed into those."
Jungkook frowned and took her bag and felt the clothes inside with both his hands. Chaeyoung pressed her lips together.
"Did you think I was lying?"
"You refused to change earlier. I wouldn't be surprised if you gave me that excuse so you didn't have to change." He nodded his head at his bag on the bed. "I got some sweaters. Go pick one."
He took out some of her clothes, looking around before he hung them on some chairs near the long mirror, another on the mirror.
Chaeyoung carefully looked through his bag and a small smile tugged at her lips at how his sweaters were all the same but different shades of black and gray. She picked the black sweater and turned to him. "Are you sure I can wear this? Are you fine with it?"
"Yes," he answered briefly without looking at her, still checking the clothes in her bag.
Chaeyoung fiddled with the sweater for a moment, her eyes glued on Jungkook who was busy separating her wet clothes from the bag. She placed the sweater on the bed and breathed softly as she took the hem of her drenched shirt and pulled it over her head before dropping the garment onto the floor. When her fingers landed on the waistband of her pants, her eyes looked up to see Jungkook had already stopped doing what he was doing earlier, his hands stuck midair with her clothes. His eyes ran down her figure before they went back up and glued to her eyes.
Without breaking eye contact, Chaeyoung pushed down her pants and pushed it to the side after it pooled at her feet. She watched how Jungkook's jaw clenched as his eyes dropped to the pants on the floor. When she spoke, she was half surprised to hear her own voice that came out low and sultry.
"You don't mind if I change right here, do you?" she asked.
Jungkook took a long deep breath as he stared into her eyes. "I don't."
She gave him a small smile and began walking slowly toward him. Her eyes never left his as she stood in front of him, and she could have sworn that Jungkook had stared into her without blinking his eyes, especially since the moment she strode toward him with only her bra and panties. Chaeyoung looked down and licked her lips, her teeth gently dug into her bottom lip as her hand went into the bag to retrieve the small waterproof bag containing her undergarments.
She looked up at him for a second before turning around to walk toward the mirrored wardrobe. When she stood right in front of the wardrobe facing the mirror, Chaeyoung didn't need to look straight in the mirror to know that Jungkook was watching her from behind, but she did anyway and maintained her eye contact as her hand reached to her back to unhook her bra slowly. When it was finally unhooked, she took a moment to look him in his eyes from the mirror before she looked down, biting the inside of her cheek softly for a second as she gently pushed the straps off her shoulder and let her bra fall onto the floor.
Chaeyoung put on the short and thin, almost transparent black nightgown, a gift she got from Jennie last year. Then, bending down to the side to pick Jungkook's sweater on the bed, she caught a glimpse of Jungkook's eyes moving down her figure, his tongue poking his cheek as he did so.
She held her smile as she stood straight again, and as soon as she wore the sweater over her nightgown, she asked, "Do you like what you see?"
She heard a scoff.
Then, "Like?"
Chaeyoung blinked her eyes and looked up to see Jungkook looking right into her eyes from the mirror. He walked slowly toward her, eyes still locked onto hers and at each slow step he took to get closer to her, the louder her heart thumped.
When he finally stood right behind her, Chaeyoung swallowed hard and bit the inside of her cheeks harder as he turned his head toward her.
"Like..." he trailed off in a lower voice, leaning slowly toward her ear and Chaeyoung almost shut her eyes close when his lips met the shell of her ear, "...is an understatement."
