Chapter 22

After a long discussion between the two families, the wedding date was finally set. Both their mothers were the ones who were most excited as they proposed wedding themes that seemingly were discussed way before Jungkook put a ring on her finger. Despite her best effort to appear calm and collected during the idea pitching session for the wedding themes, Chaeyoung couldn't contain her own excitement as her mind gave her vivid pictures of how the day would turn out.

It hadn't been too long ago that she had sworn to herself that Jungkook was the exact man she refused to be married to. But it honestly felt like those days had been gone for years as she giggled next to Jungkook and comfortably leaned toward him when he whispered light jokes to her ear when their mothers were focused on their iPads, browsing through a bunch of stuff related to weddings.

Like most people, Chaeyoung had always dreaded Mondays but when Jungkook surprised her by showing up unannounced during her lunch break, she grinned widely seeing him waiting for her right outside the main entrance that she didn't even notice Mr. Lee greeted her as she quickly made her way toward Jungkook. Her hours after the lunch just went by smoothly, as if seeing Jungkook gave her the energy to go through her Monday. Even her colleague mentioned how her mood changed right after lunch break.

"Someone's happy," Sooyoung grinned at her while leaning against the edge of her desk.

Chaeyoung snorted but her smile was stuck on her face. "A filled tummy makes a woman happy."

"Oh come on," Sooyoung placed the files she was holding onto Chaeyoung's desk. "Be honest. Was it the food or your boyfriend?"

Boyfriend.

They didn't spend a good amount of time dating before getting engaged. She could count by fingers the amount of times he was referred to as her boyfriend as compared to being called her fiancé. In fact, she only remembered that there was only one instance where they made it public that they were dating and that was when Jungkook pretty much saved her from having to entertain Mr. Lee. Even then, it was only a make-believe with them playing the roles of each other's partner perfectly on cue. Now that the people who weren't aware of their engagement referred to him as her boyfriend somehow made her insides flutter, her cheeks warm and her smile shy.

"Wait a second," Sooyoung's brows were drawn together as she stared at one place for a few moments before she looked back at Chaeyoung. "You're engaged?"

Chaeyoung chuckled, her teeth made an appearance as she bit her lower lip and nodded. Sooyoung congratulated her and feigned hurt when she wasn't informed about it but made Chaeyoung promise to invite her for the wedding. They spent a few minutes talking about their respective partners before one of their seniors walked past them, leading Sooyoung to scramble back to her desk.

Exactly an hour later, she received a text message from Jungkook asking her if she had anything specific she wanted to eat for the next day's lunch and that alone got herself smiling on her own before she remembered that she had a meeting with a client already planned by Seojun and she was required to be there as his assistant. With a pout, she sent him a reply to tell him about it and felt slightly anxious when his reply didn't come in as soon as she expected it to be.

She blinked in surprise when Jungkook's name appeared on the screen of her phone, waiting for her to answer the phone call, instead of a reply through text.

"Will you be free for dinner, then? At my parents'. To make up for the bad dinner experience you had last time my cousin was there."

"Did you think I was going to say 'no' when it comes to food made by your mom?" she chuckled and he mirrored her in response.

"I still have to ask you. Can't just show up at your house unannounced and drag you to my parent's place. Someone will spread the word that I kidnapped you," he teased, clearly referring to that one time she screamed in his car and accused him of kidnapping her.

"Shut up." Chaeyoung covered her mouth to laugh. "You know, I would actually allow you to 'kidnap' me to have dinner with your mom every day."

"Mm," he responded. "My mom won't have a problem if you wanna have dinner there every day. In fact, she wants you to, but..."

Chaeyoung heard him clearing his throat before saying, "I'd like to have some alone time with you too."

Chaeyoung tried to act cool, like that didn't affect her one bit, but she caught a reflection of herself and her cheeks were clearly turning red. She pouted in an attempt to prevent herself from smiling as she rested her face on one hand as she propped an elbow on the desk.

"We literally see each other almost every day for lunch," she scoffed, feigning annoyance as she thanked the universe that they were only on the phone and not face to face.

"So?" he asked. "It's only around an hour."

Chaeyoung rolled her eyes but the smile on her face finally widened. "Fine," she sighed playfully. "At seven?"

Despite not seeing Jungkook with her own eyes, she knew that he was smiling when he replied, "As usual."

As soon as the door to his office clicked to a close, Jungkook released a long breath of relief before his smile widened. Another one of the projects he handled finally reached the end with success. At times like that he truly believed that hard work always paid off.

"So, shouldn't we celebrate this?" Yugyeom nudged his arm with an elbow. "Say, treat us all for lunch?"

Jungkook playfully smacked the back of Yugyeom's shoulder. "Fine. You did a great job anyway."

"Hey, I always do," Yugyeom clicked his tongue. "Where should we eat, Boss?"

"Your choice."

"Hell yes!" His assistant cheered. "And you're joining, right?"

Since Chaeyoung would be busy for a lunch date, he figured that he could spend a little time with his staff who had worked hard. "Yeah, why not," he laughed.

"We're inviting everyone, right?"

"Everyone," Jungkook confirmed.

"By everyone, do you mean the whole team or the whole department or the whole building?"

"Just the whole department."

"Geez. Tell me you're stingy without telling me you're stingy," Yugyeom purposely said it out loud.

Jungkook didn't turn around when he asked, "Do you still want to eat for free or should I cancel the offer?"

Without missing a beat, Yugyeom responded, "Where else can we get a generous boss who would treat the whole department for lunch?"

Chaeyoung almost cheered when Seojun told her that she could leave after the meeting, and that she didn't need to get back to the office. She flicked her wrist to check on the time, there was around 30 minutes left for her lunch break but now that she was free for the rest of the day after the meeting, she figured that surprising Jungkook at his office for lunch would be a great idea.

Just as she buckled up on her seatbelt and got herself ready to drive to see her fiancé, a group of people crossed the road together, laughing and talking to each other and seemed to have enjoyed their lunch break as they were heading back toward their office. Her lips subconsciously pulled into a soft smile when she spotted Jungkook walking behind everyone with another tall man, realizing he probably belonged to the same group and so he had already had his lunch.

Jungkook's head hung low as he focused on his phone while a friend of his animatedly talked right next to him as they walked. Chaeyoung decided to snap a picture of him from her car and send him that with advice to keep his eyes off the phone while crossing the road. When she lifted her phone with the camera open, her thumb stopped right before she could press on the button when a woman turned around to link her arm with Jungkook before she dragged him, trying to make him walk faster.

Chaeyoung put her phone down, the soft smile she had on her face completely vanished when she realized it was the same woman who had repeatedly chased her away whenever she wanted to see him in his office. Her teeth dug into her bottom lip as she looked away, not wanting to witness more of what had ached her heart as she quickly pulled out of the parking and went straight home.

Jungkook always chose to be about five to ten minutes early when picking up Chaeyoung because he didn't like the idea of her waiting for him. But for their dinner that night, he was standing right outside her door 30 minutes before 7 p.m., hoping that she would let him in just so he could watch her prepare. He pressed on the doorbell as he hid the small bouquet of roses behind his back. When the door slowly opened revealing Chaeyoung, a small smile crept onto his face.

"Hi."

Chaeyoung merely stared at him for a moment. "You're early."

"Just thought that I can wait here while you get ready," Jungkook said and slowly pulled the three roses hiding behind him, giving the bouquet to her. "For you."

Her eyes dropped to the bouquet and spent a few seconds to look at it before he heard a soft sigh. "Thanks," she said and took it.

Jungkook was about to follow her inside when suddenly, she appeared back with her handbag and he caught a glimpse of the bouquet just lying on the coffee table.

"I'm ready. Let's go."

With furrowed brows, Jungkook stepped back to give her space to exit her house. He almost asked if she was really ready or if she needed some more time, but as he eyed her from head to toe, she seemed to be done with her makeup and hair and even donned a nice dress. Chaeyoung started walking without looking at him and he stood in confusion for a moment before he quickly matched her steps. When he purposely grazed the back of her hand with his, she lifted her hand to hold her handbag for the rest of the walk toward the elevator, and into his car.

Chaeyoung was quiet throughout the drive to his parents' place. Most of her responses were merely soft hums or one-word answers. When they finally arrived and were welcomed by his mother, he finally saw her smiling. She spoke to his parents and acted like the usual, but Jungkook did notice that she avoided his touches and wouldn't look at him when he tried to slip himself into the conversation. She didn't laugh when he pulled a joke, but easily chuckled when his father funnily argued with his mother.

Jungkook cut the meat and placed pieces of it onto her plate, but she fed his mother every piece. When he placed an arm around her backrest, she shifted forward and refused to lean back. He noticed that she leaned back in her seat only after he removed his arm.

When it was time to leave, Jungkook took her handbag from the seat and held it close to his chest as he stood there with a hand in pocket, watching her talking to his mother before hugging the latter goodbye. She turned around and saw her handbag he was holding, and just like that, a frown settled onto her face as she swiftly yet gently took it from him before she walked away, not forgetting to wave her hands again to his parents.

As soon as he started the engine, Jungkook glanced at his fiancée for a moment, waiting for her to turn to him to at least yell at him, but she did none of that as she continued to stare forward. With a sigh, he started driving in silence, knowing well now that she didn't want to talk to him. Yet, the longer they were silent around each other, the more uncomfortable it became.

"You okay?" he gently asked when they stopped at a traffic light.

She did not respond right away, but when she did, it began with a heavy sigh. "Tired."

If he didn't notice the annoyance on her face, he would've believed her. Did she have a bad day after her meeting with the client? Did it not go well? A beat passed, and Jungkook carefully tried to ask, "You want to talk about it?"

Another sigh. "I don't want to talk about anything. I'm tired and sleepy. I just wanna go home."

The light turned green and Jungkook turned his head from her, trying to focus on the road. That was the longest response he received from her that day, yet it sounded upsetting.

Chaeyoung briefly argued with him when he chose to find a parking spot instead of just dropping her off. She stood far from him in the elevator, and even walked faster so she wasn't walking beside him. When they finally reached her door, Jungkook said 'good night' but Chaeyoung responded with nothing with her eyes fixed on the floor, and just lazily tried to close the door on him.

Jungkook blocked the door with his hand. "Let's not do this."

Chaeyoung looked up and raised a brow at him. While crossing her arms, she responded, "Oh?"

He exhaled softly. "I can't read minds, Chaeyoung. I don't know what goes on in that pretty head of yours. So let's talk about it. Tell me what I did that pissed you off."

"Who said I'm pissed off?" she scoffed.

Jungkook chuckled softly. "No one has to say. Your face makes it obvious. And you ignored me all night."

Chaeyoung took a deep breath, rolled her eyes and looked away. "I'm just tired. Go home, Jungkook."

"Okay, I may not be a mind reader, but I sure as hell can feel if something's off. I won't leave until you tell me."

"Why do you even bother? Don't waste your time here. The night's still young. Maybe you want to go and have fun with your secret girlfriend."

Jungkook furrowed his brows. "Secret girlfriend?"

"Or maybe it's not so secret after all, since you flirt with her in the open."

"Flirt? What the hell are you talking about?" he tilted his head, amused and confused. "Who did I flirt with?"

Chaeyoung stared at him long, her eyes sharp. "Who knows about us? About you being engaged?"

His brows further knitted. "Everyone."

"Including the people at work? Do they know?"

"Yes," he nodded. "Everyone."

Jungkook didn't make an announcement that he was engaged, but right after the revelation he made to his receptionist, Yugyeom confronted him for not mentioning about being engaged. Days later, almost everyone he met in the office congratulated him for his engagement.

Chaeyoung crossed her arms again and looked away. "I finished my meeting quite early today and was just near your workplace. Thought I'd go and look for you, maybe get lunch together. But you were heading out with your colleagues. And..."

Jungkook's jaw went tight. He had someone in his head who could be the cause of his fiancée getting upset. "And?"

"And this beautiful woman just couldn't keep her hands off you. I didn't want to assume anything about it, but she's the same woman who repeatedly asked me to leave because I didn't make an appointment to see you when you were the one who asked me to come over at your office," she pouted and Jungkook tried his best to stay composed as he listened. "Is she your ex-girlfriend? Did you guys date before we got engaged? Let me guess, you broke up with her right after we got engaged? Or was it before? Why don't you just marry her then?"

"No..." Jungkook sighed softly and shook his head. "No, no, no." He inhaled deeply as he thought on how to explain to her who exactly she was. "Look..." he said and took another moment before he resumed. "Okay, listen. She... used to have a crush on me, confessed to me like a couple years ago, can't remember exactly when. But I wasn't interested, and I am still not interested."

"Used to, huh?" she let out a scoff. "Boy, I think she still has." Chaeyoung pouted further and let out a heavy sigh. "Why aren't you interested? Is it because you have a fiancée?"

"Not only because I have a fiancée, but also because I'm heavily interested in one woman only and she just happened to be my fiancée."

Chaeyoung blinked at him and he swore he could see a tinge of pink tainting her cheeks. "You're annoying."

Jungkook smiled. "Am I in the clear now?"

"Good night."

"Can I get a good night kiss?"

The door closed on his face and he laughed, shaking his head. He stood in front of the door for a few moments as he thought of the shy expression on Chaeyoung glued to his mind, the smile stuck on his face before he eventually turned on his heel and began to walk down the hallway. Jungkook took out his phone and typed his good night text to her, and just right before he pressed 'Send', he heard the sound of the door opening.

When he turned around, Chaeyoung was running barefoot toward him before she threw herself into him, causing him to stumble a few steps backward, and his arms immediately wrapped around her body when he felt her lips pressed against his.

When she broke the kiss, Jungkook's smile slowly spread before she slowly mirrored him.

"Am I forgiven?"

Chaeyoung shrugged. "Who knows?"

He rolled his eyes at her, earning him a soft chuckle coming from her. "Was that my good night kiss, then?"

"That was a 'thank you' kiss."

"Thank you kiss?"

"For being honest," she shyly smiled.

"Can I give you a 'you're welcome' kiss?" he asked but didn't wait for her response as he leaned forward and captured her lips in a gentle kiss that left her smiling.

Chaeyoung uncrossed her wrists from behind his neck. Her hands then cupped his face, thumb gently caressing his skin. "And this... this is a good night kiss." She kissed him softly on his mouth and Jungkook held the back of her head to deepen the kiss. They were kissing until he was bending her backward, his hand pressing her waist to his body and only broke the kiss when they had almost fallen to the floor. Chaeyoung laughed as she gripped his shoulders while he steadied them both.

For almost a minute, they spent it staring into each other's face, soft smiles playing on their lips before Jungkook tilted his head to capture her lips into another kiss. The kiss started soft and heart fluttering before slowly it turned hot and needy on both sides. Jungkook had to stop himself when he realized that he was about to lift her dress up in the hallway, his fingers gripping her waist tightly.

"Do you..." Chaeyoung breathed against his face, her face contorted. "Do you want to come in?"

Jungkook would have answered it by kicking her door open as he swept her off her feet if it hadn't been the reminder he received from his assistant about a meeting he had to attend tomorrow.

"Not tonight..." he sighed.

A soft frown hung on her face. "No...?" she pouted and it took all his might to stop himself from telling Yugyeom to postpone that meeting. But it had been postponed three times.

"I have an important meeting tomorrow," he explained and her face showed understanding. "I'm afraid I won't wake up in time."

Chaeyoung nibbled on her bottom lip as her smile slowly widened.

"Can you take a week off next week?" Jungkook asked.

"A week?" she cocked an eyebrow. "That seems too long..."

"Please?"

"Why?"

Jungkook caressed her tiny waist with his thumb. "I want to take you with me to...somewhere."

"Somewhere? Do I know where that somewhere is going to be?"

"Pretty sure you don't," he chuckled.

"So where are you taking me?"

"Where's the surprise if I tell you now?"

Chaeyoung playfully narrowed her eyes at him before her big smile was back on her face.
