Chapter 2

"I love you."

"Okay."

"To the moon and back."

"Okay."

"I'll choose you over anything else in life."

"Okay," Chaeyoung repeated. "Over your boyfriend?"

"Know your place," Jennie playfully pinched her cheek before she smiled widely. "You look gorgeous, Chaeng."

Chaeyoung looked at herself in the mirror after Jennie finished blowing her hair. "Shit, this won't do."

"What? Why?"

"What if he falls for me?" Chaeyoung asked with a teasing smirk.

"Then, he's all yours," Jennie winked.

"No, did you hear what I said? What if he falls for 'me', aka Kim Jennie?" Chaeyoung asked with her brows knitted, a tiny smile playing at her lips.

Jennie gave it a thought. "If that happens, I will expose myself as Kim Jennie and tell him that you are Park Chaeyoung."

"If that happens, he better be hot," Chaeyoung said. "How does he look?"

"I don't know," Jennie shrugged. "My mom never showed me what my blind dates look like, including this one. All you and I have now is the restaurant's name and a table reserved under her name."

Chaeyoung clicked her tongue. "That sucks," Chaeyoung put on the stilettos Jennie bought for her birthday last year. "At least if we know what he looks like, I could have better preparation. I could decide early on whether he's worth it or not."

Despite all the jokes that Chaeyoung threw together with Jennie about this whole thing, Chaeyoung was nervous when she entered the restaurant. She was just supposed to act as Jennie and leave a bad impression, but she couldn't help the natural instinct to look good and show everyone her best behavior as she walked toward the table where she could see the back of the man who was already waiting.

Chaeyoung swallowed hard as she stood behind the man for a few seconds before she inhaled deeply and slid her hand across the man's shoulder and she could feel him tense under her touch for a few moments.

"I hope I didn't keep you waiting for too long," she said with her best elegant laugh that people praised so much. Her insides cringed at the fakeness she showed him, especially when a few people from other tables were watching.

The man's head turned to where her hand was and didn't turn his head even after she took a seat. Chaeyoung's mission was to annoy him, and the expression on his face told her that she was one step onto success. Although, when the man brushed off the area where she had touched him with an expression that was close to either disgust or annoyance, she felt embarrassed and hurt at the gesture.

"You're late," he said flatly and when he turned to look at her, a heavy frown decorated his face.

"Only five minutes late," Chaeyoung chuckled. "I wanted to look the best, so I figured that the five minutes I took to fix my dress and makeup for you would be worth it."

"Sounds a lot like poor management skills," he said, again with that flat tone. "If you can manage time well, you wouldn't have to spend an extra five minutes to do that." He rolled his eyes and took a sip of the wine.

Oh wow. It didn't seem like it was even necessary for her to be there until the end of the dinner. She could tell that she had successfully annoyed him to the core with lesser effort than she thought she would have to put on. She should feel happy that their plan was working, but somehow, she felt none of that.

Once the waiter took their order, Chaeyoung stared at the man who leaned back with his arms crossed over his chest.

He was undoubtedly handsome and anyone could tell that he took great care of himself. Despite having slightly longer hair than she imagined his hair would look like, he looked great, although the 'great' seemed to be an understatement.

As Chaeyoung ran her gaze through his outfit and tried to feel his whole vibe, she was sure that young and rich definitely matched him well. After all, almost every man Jennie's mother selected to be her blind dates are young CEOs or heirs of reputable companies. Chaeyoung was convinced that this man had his bodyguards somewhere inside the restaurant, or a lavish car waiting for him outside before he even made his way out.

He was staring back at her, his brows furrowed as he eyed her up and down that caused Chaeyoung to inwardly panic. Did she look that bad? She was sure she looked beyond great for a blind date, Jennie told her she looked amazing and she trusted no one else but Jennie when it came to that, so why did he have to look at her like she smelled and dressed in a trash bag?

Chaeyoung tried to recall the small information Jennie gave her about this man at the last minute while they were on their way to the restaurant. Information that Jennie got from her mom after a thousand times of her begging to reveal more about the man.

He had been in multiple relationships but none ever lasted long. It wasn't much of an information, but it was good enough to say what she wanted to say next.

"So, when was your last relationship?"

He raised a brow. "You don't even know what my name is, and you want to know when my last relationship was?"

Chaeyoung pressed her lips into a thin smile. "Alright, what's your name?"

"I go by V," he said, his face showing disinterest as he sipped on his wine. "Your turn."

"That's a weird name," Chaeyoung commented. "Well then, I go by J."

She should have just told him that she was Kim Jennie, as planned. But Mr. V seemed like he didn't even want her to know anything about him. Jennie hit the jackpot with this one, he was as interested in her as he did a rock. Just as Jennie had negative interest in this man.

"You don't look like a J," he said.

"You don't look like a V either. More like a... D," she said with a laugh before she added. "If you know what I mean."

V narrowed his eyes. "I don't know what you mean."

"Dimwit," Chaeyoung muttered under her breath, which obviously didn't go unnoticed as the man leaned forward with a tilt of his head.

"Excuse me?"

"I mean," Chaeyoung sighed. "You look more like a D to me, because you remind me of dicks," she said.

The man watched her with amusement and raised his glass to his mouth and sipped. "Well, I literally have it," he said and there was a hint of smugness playing around his lips when he placed the glass back on the table.

"Obviously, but I meant figuratively," Chaeyoung replied and didn't break eye contact as she took a sip of her own wine.

Just like that, the smugness vanished off his face. The man's jaw clenched and Chaeyoung knew she hit a spot. She didn't have to act like Jennie or act like a mad woman with this one. He got annoyed pretty easily.

"You didn't answer my question," Chaeyoung said. "When was your last relationship?"

He looked like he wanted to answer the question with another question to avoid it again, but eventually he did answer though it came out nonchalantly. "Three months ago."

"Ooh, someone's fresh from a heartbreak," Chaeyoung teased. "Let me guess, she dumped you because you lectured her on everything she did wrong."

"First of all, I didn't get my heart broken. Secondly, she didn't do the dumping. I did," he defended himself although he remained calm. "Want to know why she got dumped?"

"Nah, that would be too boring," she waved her hand. "You're obviously just going to be defensive for being a toxic dick of a boyfriend."

Chaeyoung noticed the way his jaw twitched and clenched again at that remark. Her smile spread on her face as she rested her chin on her palm, staring at him. "Seems right."

V stayed quiet for a moment. "I can be the best boyfriend one could ask for —"

"Ah... a narcissist, toxic dick of a boyfriend. Perfect combo," Chaeyoung said, even when the waiter came with the food. "It's no wonder that none of your relationships ever worked out. I understand why the girls left. Congratulations to them, though. They should all gather and celebrate the fact that they have escaped you."

V leaned forward and held her gaze. "Do I somehow remind you of a past lover? Because it seems like a natural instinct for someone like you to shit on your exes and act like you did nothing wrong."

At the mention of 'past lover', it was Chaeyoung's turn to feel her teeth clench.

"So I was right," he chuckled. "When was your last relationship, J?"

She should have answered six months ago because that was when Jennie's last relationship was. But nothing about Jennie came to mind as she was reminded of her former boyfriend who had left her three years ago.

V let out another series of soft mocking laughter. "It seems to be so long ago that you've forgotten how long it's been since you last dated someone." A huge smirk was displayed on his face. "Funny how you have no luck in love after your last relationship ended, and yet here you are trying to bitch it all to me. Aren't you supposed to feel lucky that I am at least willing to go on this date that you, I believe, have been craving for so long?"

Chaeyoung exhaled slowly, trying to calm herself before she could grab the wine and splash it onto this dick's face. "Well, I'd rather spend a long time being single than jumping onto relationship after relationship. Unlike someone, who acts all tough but can't stand being single because he's so afraid of being alone. Yet, none of his thousands of relationships work," she said calmly.

V was quiet for a long time, his brows furrowed the longer their eyes locked onto each other. "Well, J. If you're fine being single, why are you here tonight?"

Chaeyoung took her phone out and texted Jennie that she wished to end the dinner earlier than expected. "Doing someone a favor," she answered before realizing what she said. When she did, she tried not to swallow the hard lump in her throat. Shit.

"Doing someone a favor?" he questioned. "What could that mean?"

Chaeyoung placed her phone away and faked a calm smile. "Doing my mom's a favor, obviously. She is the only one feeling bothered by my single life."

V nodded and Chaeyoung softly released a sigh of relief.

Chaeyoung sipped a bit more of her wine. "Well, Mr. V, it's been a real pleasure," she said and tried to think of a last minute plan to make this night as terrible as it could get for him. She displayed an insincere smile. "But I'm afraid I have to go somewhere."

And for the last one, Chaeyoung made sure that V could see that it was her intention all along as she bumped into the table and his wine glass fell, the liquid pouring onto him. V cursed under his breath as he stood quick.

Chaeyoung purposely stood beside him as he took off his jacket, roughly wiping the now wine-stained dress shirt of his with the napkin.

"Aww, I'm sorry. I'm sure this is all really embarrassing and I swear I'd offer you a ride to get you a brand new dress shirt, but I'm really late," Chaeyoung said with her best act of regret and couldn't contain her smile when he glowered down at her.

"You—"

Before he could finish his sentence, Chaeyoung sprinted out of the restaurant, feeling half-guilty, half-proud of what she had done to him. It wasn't like she did something extraordinary. She didn't even act out as planned. But he was being a prick from the beginning, and she couldn't help but respond to him by being rude.

Chaeyoung looked around and cursed inwardly when she didn't see Jennie anywhere around. Jennie's 'otw' probably meant that she would be on-the-way half an hour later. Not wanting to waste more time, Chaeyoung waved her hand for a cab.

"I heard that my blind date tonight was supposed to be the heiress of one of the largest companies in the entertainment industry."

Chaeyoung's hand froze midair as soon as she registered the voice. When she turned her head, V was walking toward her, folding his jacket nicely before hanging it on one arm.

"I expected that the rude, spoiled rich lady I was on a date with would have at least a limo waiting for her outside." He stopped walking when he was standing just right beside her.

Chaeyoung was convinced that her face was now red. "My driver is coming, and I was only... chasing away some mosquitoes..."

Just then, two vehicles came to a stop in front of them both. One was a black SUV with heavily tinted windows. One was a cab. V looked over at the cab, then to her and smirked.

"Exactly."

Chaeyoung's jaw dropped and a scoff rolled out of her. "Asshole."

V stopped in his tracks and turned around. He smiled with his eyes first, and the smirk tugged his lips further. "Have a good night, J."

Chaeyoung narrowed her eyes. "Have the worst night, V."
