Chapter 29 - Devin

I heard the doorknob being turned. The door was opened split-seconds later. There stood a man, about six-foot-three. He had jet-black hair, all spiked up nicely (pic above). He had a soft, yet semi-deep voice.

"Hey," he smiled.

"Hi. I'm Chloe, your half-sister," I introduced myself.

"I was thinking that's who you were. Come in!"

"Thank you," I muttered.

"Alexia!!" He called into his apartment as we walked in.

"Yeah, Devin?" A woman about his age walked out from the hallway.

"This is my half-sister, Chloe. Chloe, this is my girlfriend, Alexia," he introduced us to each other.

"It's nice to meet you," she hugged me.

"You as well," I smiled, and she walked back into the hallway.

"Sit," Devin motioned for me to sit beside him on his couch.

"So, how have you been?" I asked.

"Great. I just met my dad about a month ago that I had never known about."

"Yeah, my dad too."

"He's really nice."

"He is. Actually, he was a drug and alcohol addict for about five and a half years. He's been drug and alcohol free for about four years now."

"Wow."

"Yeah."

"What made him start into drugs and alcohol in the first place?"

"I'm not actually sure."

"Well then what made him stop?"

"Him and my mum were both into them, and they both realized that I needed parents, and that I would need help in my life."

"What did you do in those five years? You would've been nine when they started?"

"Eight. And I was a mini adult. I worked for my neighbors to make money for everything I needed."

"Oh my god. Was it hard?"

"Really. It got easier when I moved in with one of my neighbors. She took me in, and she was like a grandma to me."

"I'm sorry for your loss. I'm guessing she passed."

"She did. It's alright."

"Well, I don't have a great past, really. My mum met my stepdad when I was two, then they got married when I was four. My mum had my half-brother when I was five. I graduated high school, and I'm in my second year of college now."

"That's good. When did you meet Alexia?"

"I met her about a year ago in college. She's a year behind me. Also, I saw that you have an engagement ring on? You're only eighteen, right?"

"I am. I'm newly engaged, just last night. My fiancé is in the car if you'd like to meet him."

"Could I?"

"Of course."

I got out my phone and called down to Ashton. He picked it up and immediately asked about how it was going, even though he didn't know who I was talking to.

"It's good. He wants to meet you. You can bring mum, dad, and Kaely too. I think he'd like to meet mum and Kaely too."

"Okay. We'll be up in a few minutes."

"See you then babe.. Bye."

"Bye Chlo," he said before hanging up.

I hung up also and turned back to Devin.

"Is Kaely your sister?" He wondered.

"No, she's not. I don't have any other siblings."

"I didn't think you did. Dad only mentioned about you."

"Yeah, I didn't think he'd mention about Kaely. He probably was letting that to me."

"Oh, okay.." I think he was wondering who Kaely was. I wanted to surprise him.

Ashton, mum, dad, and Kaely found the apartment, and I heard them knock. Devin got up and walked over to the door with me behind him. He opened it and let them in after greeting them.

"So you're Audrey?" He asked mum.

"I am," she smiled, "it's nice to meet you."

Devin moved onto dad and hugged him before walking towards Ashton who was holding Kaely.

"Who is this, Chloe?" Ashton asked, pulling Kaely closer to his chest, I loved it when he was protective.

"This is Devin, my half-brother. No need to get protective."

"Hey, I'm Ashton. This is Kaely," Ashton told Devin, holding his hand out for Devin to shake.

"This is Kaely?" Devin asked while looking at me after shaking Ashton's hand.

"Yeah."

"Is she a cousin? Please don't-"

"She's my daughter."

"say she's your daughter," he mumbled, finishing his earlier sentence.

"Devin, she's not Ashton's. It's a long story."

"Is she the reason your parents quit?"

"Yeah, actually."

"If she isn't Ashton's, who's is she?"

"Devin, I was raped at thirteen."

"What?!"

"That's how I got pregnant."

"Oh, I'm sorry Chloe. I didn't mean-"

"Devin, it's alright. I get this all of the time."

"She's beautiful, though. How old is she?"

"I'm four," Kaely interrupted.

"Well, Kaely, I'm your uncle Devin."

"Uncle Devin?"

"Yep," he smiled, reaching his hands towards Kaely, wanting to hold her. Kaely gripped onto Ashton even more.

"Maybe not yet, Dev," I told him.

"Okay. I get it," he agreed.

All four of us walked into the living room where mum and dad were waiting. Dad started talking to Devin.

"So, the other day, you said to me about a girlfriend.. Does she live here with you?" Dad wondered.

"She does.. Alexia!" Devin called to Alexia. She came out again and met everyone.

"Devin, what's going on here?" She asked.

"You met Chloe earlier, and this is her mum, Audrey. This is our dad, Travis. This is Chloe's fiancé, Ashton. Finally, this is Chloe's daughter, Kaely," Devin smiled as Alexia sat on the couch beside him.

"Daughter?" She wondered. We explained to her, and she understood.

I still couldn't believe I had a brother. I never thought I would have siblings. As we left, Devin told me that I could come over any time I wanted. I was going to like having a brother to go to.

------

We went back to my house, and mum and dad left.  Ashton, Kaely, and I went to his house to spend the night. Anne Marie also wanted to hear about the proposal. Lauren wanted to hear about it too, and she wanted to see my ring.

Harry is my little buddy. He loves me, and I love him. He really likes the fact that Ashton and I are getting married. He's wanted us to get married ever since we got together. He's always liked us as a couple.

Ashton, Kaely, and I stayed the night at his house. The next morning, we just went to church from there, then went back there. In the evening was our second-to-last youth group meeting. It was the last real meeting, because the next week, there was going to be a graduation party for people graduating instead of a real youth group meeting. I didn't want to leave the group. People there had become more like family to me since I've been going there. It's been amazing. I love them, and I don't want to leave, but I'll have to. I have two more meetings, though. I have to savor the time there.
