Aurora Rising

Genre: Sci-Fi, but it doesn't seem like it, and this book also has a very humorous side as well.

*I'm proud of this summary, I feel like I did the book more justice than the actual summary :)*
Summary: After trapped in 200 years of cryo sleep, Aurora wakes up to being rescued by a Legion officer. Things have gone wrong, starting with she never got to the destination she was supposed to be going. That destination has mysteriously disappeared off the records, and everyone is telling her that it doesn't exist. Moreover, she was the only survivor of the ship. Auri's been having strange hallucinations and visions ever since. And they can only lead to one thing.
A goose-chase across the galaxy.

Meanwhile, Tyler's brave act of heroism doesn't mean anything good for him. He was the highest ranking officer in the Aurora Legion, and could have had the pick of any squad he wanted. But rescuing Auri has left him to face some hard choices, and that means being stuck with the people no one would have wanted.
——
The Alpha.
The Diplomat.
The Brain.
The Warrior.
The Pilot.
The Gearhead.
And, of course, The Mystery Girl, Auri.

Someone's out to make it seem like Auri's never existed, and Tyler's Squad had been caught up in the middle of it all. All they have to do is make sure to avoid a huge war, stay on the run from all the major governments that are trying to kill them, and try to stay alive.
And, don't forget, most of this squad never wanted to be stuck with each other.

No pressure.

Title: I read in the last Illuminae Files book that the authors would originally going to name the series "The Andromeda Cycle", I'm glad they went with "Aurora" because it's shorter and a little more modern than "Andromeda" (but this is science fiction of course so I can't complain what names are "in-style" at that time 😂) 5/5. (Update: I watched an interview and found out why they changed the name. It's because this book is set in the Aurora section of the galaxy (if you read it you'll know what I mean) so they named it Aurora, and before, the section was set in Andromeda, which didn't work out, after that they were going to name the trilogy "the Milky Way Cycle" but then they thought it sounded like a candy bar so they went with Aurora :)
Cover: 5/5, nailed it.
Summary: Honestly, I didn't even look at the summary before going in. I would truly read anything Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff wrote, as long as it's set in space. I decided to give it a try after some friends told me it was good, and I needed something good to read after Illuminae Files. Now, looking at it, I feel like it it could have done better and not be so "exaggerated". 4/5.
Hook: I have to admit, it could have done better. The authors kind of need to work on their hooks, I never really get interested by them. In fact, I was reading the first few chapters of Aurora Rising, and it was so boring, I was like "bruh, this is not what it was meant to be" and almost abandoned it for reading Twilight, for the first time.
Now I'm so glad I didn't do that and continued reading. 3/5.
Plot: There isn't exactly a solid plot for this book. I can't tell without spoiling, but although it's mainly one thing, it IS really interesting. And there's also a humor factor in here. Being honest, I never knew the authors were comedians. Sometimes I was laughing out loud and sometimes I was trying to process the insane plot twists and the tactics used in this book. The squad is really smart. 4/5.
Character Development: I admit, some characters had more character development than the others. Though I think all of them did progress a little from their original...way. 4/5.
Originality: 5/5. No questions asked.

What to remember when reading/what I wished someone told me before reading:
First of all, the beginning is really boring. That's all I have to say for this. So just keep reading and all the action will be there, I promise.

Second of all, be prepared to laugh out loud. Yes, this book is supposed to be serious and "we have to stay alive!" But that doesn't mean the characters don't have a bunch of sass/humor in them 😂

Third of all, I read this because I read Illuminae Files, and I was thinking it would be kind of similar. That's not exactly the case, although there will be subtle references to some aspects of the Illuminae series (since they're the same authors) and some characters will seem the exact same as the ones in Illuminae, but toward the middle and end I was thinking of them as different characters, rather than "they is so similar!"

I think that's it, for what you may want to know. But wait, I forgot.

Fourth of all, as some reviewer on amazon said, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are the type who'll put a banana peel of a plot twist in front of when you're walking (or reading, in this case) and hide behind a tree, cackling as they watch you fall for it. Being a huge mystery fan when I was younger, I have a habit of knowing how to solve things (in books) and what will happen, but this didn't happen for this book. This one event came as a a TOTAL surprise to me. The characters are also good actors, don't forget that :)

All right, that's all.

This book is for those who enjoy science fiction (duh), and humor. I think you would like this book, even if you weren't a huge fan of science fiction. It also helps that this was released last year and the second book was released this year! And there will be a third book coming up, next year. (2021) I haven't read the second (or third) book yet but I'm going to soon!

Characters:
There are too many characters in this book so I'm only doing the very main characters and a very short description.
Tyler: The Alpha and the Leader/Commander of Squad 312.
Scarlett: Tyler's twin sister and the diplomat. She cares about everyone like family, though she doesn't always show it (and she's pretty cocky) but she's really sweet.
Cat: The amazing pilot, nicknamed "Zero" for never missing a target in flight school. She's a master of sarcasm.
Zila: The brain, and the expert in science and anything medical. She doesn't talk a lot, but she's super smart with a genius IQ. She...also has a passion for shooting her roommates, but that's not important.
Fin: The techie who's too smart and sassy for his own good.
Kal: The warrior. He....is a warrior. (And he's not funny on purpose, but he probably makes me laugh the most in this book)
Aurora: She's mainly called "Aurora" though she mentions that she prefers being called "Auri". She's like 200 years old and is definitely not normal. As in, for some reason, she's getting strange powers she doesn't know what to do with, normal.

Another thing I forgot to mention: The POVs are always switching in this book. Although Auri is on the cover, that doesn't necessarily mean she's the main character/the one who's POV is always there.

I'm off to read Aurora Burning! I swear, at some point, I WILL stop having so many sci-fi books here. Eventually. Maybe I should just make this "book suggestions" book a "sci-fi book suggestions list", lol.

But really, even if you don't like sci-fi, there are good books of every genre out there. Sorry for not uploading new content, it takes so long to do these reviews 😂 maybe I should just make them shorter.

Let me know your favorite genres so I can do more "undiscovered" books of that genre! :)
