"The Umri Gene" is a fictional novel written by Preety Kaithwas that revolves around the various characters of the Umri Village in Allahabad. The village not only piqued up the interests of all researchers but also that of our author. Intrigued by the twin village she weaved her story making Shubhadra the main protagonist. The story takes place in Umri village and Delhi. The author has depicted the social discrimination, child abuse, female infanticide, the submissive role which women played in the olden days and the emotional turmoil that they have experienced.

The author has very well expressed all the scenarios. Through her simplicity she makes the message reach all the audience. Each and every scene; emotion; trouble; hardships are beautifully portrayed. Readers can feel the emotions of each character. The author's words connects us to the characters of the story and makes us travel along with them. Equal importance is given to all the characters. This story gives us an insight of how women were being treated in the olden days and how much ordeal they had to deal and face and what women had to go through even if they were right.

Characterization, writing style, narration, all fits so well in the novel. The author has fused science and fantasy giving us a wonderful book to read. Once you pick this book you would never put it down without completing. The title and cover for the book looks good. I couldn't find any errors and any negatives in this book. Even if there were any, it could be easily overlooked due to the story. The author has really done a good job in fulfilling her objective of writing this book.

I'd suggest everyone to read this wonderful fiction.
