Book: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

Summary (Including Spoilers)

We start off the last book of the mortal instruments series by being introduced to Emma Castiers and her best friend Julian Blackthorn. (Both of whom I am extremely excited to get to know!!!) Along with them the entire Blackthorn family; Helen and Mark (both half siblings - both part fairy.) The twins; Tiberus - hella smart and Livvy, Dru - 8 years and Octavius - 2 year old baby. Their mother died and they're living with their father in the LA institute. 

We're immediately thrown into their story when the institute is attacked by Sebastian and all the kids are left alone in the training room. While trying to get the kids to safety, Emma stumbles upon Sebastian and watches as he forces Mr. Blackthorn drink from a cup, causing him to turn into an endarkened. Luckily she escapes with Julian and the kids through a portal to Idris. Unfortunately, upon their arrival, Emma finds out from Helen that Sebastian killed both of her parents and their bodies were found washed up on a beach.

When everyone realizes that Sebastian is attacking institutes they all leave to Alicante (everyone from all the institutes around the world), assuming that they'll be safer in a larger group. When everyone is gathered together in Alicante, a meeting is held where the Blackthorn children along with Emma, are questioned with the Mortal sword (which is very painful and causes the person a lot of pain.)  Because Julian is the oldest, its used on him and this angers Emma, she grabs the sword from him and tells everyone what she saw Sebastian doing. After she gets upset and runs away causing Clary to follow her and they have a very cute bonding moment. 

We find out that Sebastian and the Queen of Seelie have something going on, obviously meaning that she betrayed the Nephilim. 

Simon is captured by Maureen's vampires and Raphael breaks him out on condition that  he acts as a vampire representative to get help with the whole Maureen situation. 

Maia and Jordan are summoned to the praetors headquarters, in which they find the building on fire, with a whole lot of people dead. Sebastian shows up and stabs Jordan, killing him and tells Maia to send a message to all of the downworlders that this is what will happen to them if they align themselves with the Nephilim. 

A fight breaks out and Shadowhunter's go through the portal to try and retrieve their loved ones, not knowing that its a failed mission. Jace and Clary go through and try to either get people back or to help them. During the fight, Sebastian shows up and stabs Jace, but fire erupts from the wound, burning the sword as well as Sebastian's hand. Sebastian vanishes and Jace bleeds fire, Brother Zachariah ties to help him but the fire burns through him and spreads throughout his body which effectively turns him back into MY BABY JEM !!!

The fairies have a dinner for all of the downworlder reps which includes; Luke, Magnus, Jocelynn, Raphael as well as Merlion. The fairies drug them and Sebastian holds them hostage in a demon realm. Sebastian asks Raphael to join an alliance with him but to Magnus - Raphael's oldest friend to prove that he's serious - when Raph disagrees, Sebastian kills him. 

While Luke's away; trouble arises in the pack and Maia becomes the new Beta. She finds out that all the Downworlder reps have been kidnapped and tries to form an alliance with the New York vampires. She meets with Maureen -  and tricks her, killing her with the help of Lydia - who in turn becomes the new vampire in charge which also allows an alliance to be formed. 

Emma shows up in-front of the gang and gives them vital information about Sebastian (which she kept from the counsel because she doesn't trust them) and about a place called Edom (a demon realm) that can be accessed through the fairy court. At the fairy court Alec kills Merlion and they run into Mark Blackthorn - who has joined the wild hunt because he thought his whole family was murdered - Jace tells him to warn his family and the Nephilim about the fairies betrayal. 

In the demon realm, Jace goes to inspect a suspicious demon who makes him really angry which causes him to  burst into literal flames, scotching everything around him. Clary goes into the fire by drawing a fireproof rune and somehow she gets the fire under control,  saving Jace along with it. Later we find out that she actually transformed the heavenly fire into the Morgenstine dagger and uses that to stab Sebastian. Because the heavenly fire burns away all the evil, we find ourselves looking at Jonathan and Clary and Jocelynn mourn over who he could have been. Before Jonathan dies, he tells Jace where the infernal cup is and Jace destroys it causing all of the endarkened to instantly die. 

Before he does that - in Alicante - the endarkened break into the Hall of Accords where the Shadowhunter children are kept and Julian is forced to kill his father in-front of his siblings. 

Even though Sebastian is dead - the group is still trapped in the demon dimension. Magnus calls on his demon father to get them out. He send Jocelynn, Luke and Jonathans body back without a price but demands that Magnus gives up his immortality as a price to send everyone else back.  If Magnus gives up his immortality, his years will catch up with his body and he'll basically just vanish. Before Magnus can agree, Simon steps up and gives up his immortality, however the demon wants Simons memories of the shadow world (which includes Clary) in order for all of them to go home. Simon agrees and when everyone is sent back to Alicante - he's no where to be found. 

Once everything is done a Clave meeting is held where the fairies ask for leniency but the Nephilim deny it. Because Helen and Mark are half fairy, some of the Nephilim are against them and Helen is sent to some Island to study - meaning she has to leave all of her younger siblings. The Blackthorns uncle from London announces that he'll move to the London institute to look after all the kids. Emma and Julian are scared that his uncle won't take Emma in so they become parabatai - forcing the situation - even though he would have agreed nonetheless. 

A few weeks later, Magnus and Izzy stalk Simon and find out that he remembers a little bit of the Shadow world and Magnus works on getting his memories back. 

At Jocelynn and Luke's wedding everyone is there including Simon (who remembers Clary thanks to Magnus) along with Tessa and Jem!!! And it ends realllly nicely and everything is okay and happy and safe. For now at least.

I LOVED this book. Even though it was EXTREMELY long and took me forever to get through it SO much happened and everything came together so beautifully in the end. I especially Love how Jem and Tessa are back and they were together in the end and UGH ALL THE FEELS AND ALSO HOW TESSA AND JEM WERE WATCHING JACE IN SUCH A LOVING WAY. And then she gave Clary the HERONDALE RING TO GIVE TO JACE AND OMG I MISS WILLIAM SO MUCH!!!

Also the entire Jace and Clary scene at the bioluminescent cave/beach place!!!! They are so so cute and I loved that WHOLE scene and the way they came up with the whole plan to deceive Sebastian and didn't tell anyone but one another. Their relationship came so far and they are so cute and beautiful together I LOVE THEM.

WE ALSO GOT IZZY AND SIMON SCENES!!!!

There was just a lot and frankly I'm embarrassed to have only finished this series recently and not when they came out and when it was a buzz. It would have been so much fun to have been with the crowd and the fans going through all of it together - but alas this is where I am now and, regardless and I am so in love with all of these characters. I am also so so excited to read more about Emma and Julian and I JUST KNOW THE DRAMA COMING FROM THERE IS GONNA BE ABSOLUTELY GUT - WRENCHING and I'm so so excited.
