City of Ashes
Book: City Of Ashes by Cassandra Clare (Book 2 in The Mortal Instrument series)
"I've got a stele we can use. Who wants to do me?"
"A regrettable choice of words," muttered Magnus."
Summary (Including Spoilers)
~The book starts off with Valentine Morgenstern raising a greater demon that basically uses fear to kill its victims. Valentines main obsession is to obtain all of the mortal instruments which are the cup, the sword and the mirror.
~Meanwhile, Clary tries to distract her feelings for Jace by 'dating' Simon, this doesn't work well at all and crashes and burns as quickly as it starts.
~We're introduced to two new characters, Maia, a werewolf girl who had an abusive ex that turned her into a werewolf and inquisitor Herondale who is so incredibly MEAN and unnecessary. She has Jace thrown into a cell in the SILENT CITY because she thinks that he's somehow working and conspiring with Valentine. Clary, Izzy and Alec save him and then Jace is sent to Magnus to be kept under a watchful eye. However, Jace goes with the gang in Alec's stead to the Fairy Court, leaving Alec with Magnus.
~At the Fairy Court, Jace and Clary share a heated kiss due to the Queens orders. This upsets Simon and he runs away to Hotel Dumont and ends up getting killed by the vampires which leads Raphael to save him. Raphael brings him to the institution where everyone watches as Simon is turned into a vampire.
~Clary discovers her ability to create runes, creates the fearless rune and use's it on Alec.
~Simon and Maia are captured by Valentine, where he drains them of their blood. Luke, Jace, Magnus and Clary go to save them. A battle breaks out between demons and Alec and Izzy bring more Shadowhunter's to help. During the battle Inquisitor Herondale saves Jace and dies.
Jace finds Simon and saves him by feeding him his blood which causes Simon to become a Daywalker (he can walk in the sun unlike other vampires.) Clary creates another rune destroys the ship, killing the demons and ultimately saving everyone.
Rating: I'll give it a 3 out of 5 mostly because it felt more like a filler more than anything. Like there were a lot of important stuff that happened like with Simon but I enjoyed the first one A LOT more. Also the inquisitor irritated me so much throughout this book so I think that kind of influences my overall rating. I really hope we see more of Maia though, she was quite interesting. I also really enjoy reading Jace and Simons scenes! Each of them leave me in tears and I hope we see more of their interactions in the upcoming books.
