THOUGHTS ON SOUL SCREAMERS
I am re reading a whole lot of my old books now, because of quarantine, and woah did I have some bad taste in my younger years. I read this series first back when I was going through my Twilight phase and was into all things supernatural. I only own one of the books, which is what I've re read, but I remember the others, and the plot isn't exactly complicated.
(Will include covers when the internet decides to work)
Soul Screamers is a series about a teenage girl named Kaylee. She's your usual basic main character - indeterminate hair or eye colour, very white, very straight, very dull. She's a bean sidhe, or a banshee, which means that when people are about to die she gets an uncontrollable urge to scream. Her dad, AWOL until the first book, is also a banshee, and so was her mother, who is dead because she sacrificed her life for Kaylee's when her daughter was a baby.
Her weird jock boyfriend with an even weirder name is Nash, who is also a banshee, plus his mother. His brother Tod was a banshee until he died, now he's a Reaper who collects souls.
Nash is really moody all the time. He freaks out about the tiniest things, plus it's emphasised that he is super popular and how could he even notice a little nobody like Kaylee Cavanaugh, even though she's super beautiful and has guys noticing her all the time, YOU KNOW THE DRILL.
Summarising the whole series with random points:
- Kaylee is a normal boring girl until she discovers she's a banshee and then her weird family put her in a mental hospital because everyone thinks she's crazy. Then she gets out.
- Kaylee gets upset and moans a lot because of Nash or some supernatural shenanigans with demons and the Netherworld, especially including this one demon who was supposed to get her soul when she died as a baby and is still pissy about it.
- Random weird stuff happens. The plot of each book is pretty weird. In one of them, Kaylee's aunt trades the souls of young girls to a demon in exchange for her own eternal beauty, then backtracks and sacrifices hers when her own daughter is due to be killed.
Nash and his friends get addicted to a drug they call "frost," or demon breath. The friends go insane and/or die, but Nash gets off lightly because he isn't fully human.
Tod's ex girlfriend is a super famous pop star, but it's revealed she sold her soul to the demon from earlier for fame, ouch.
A literal incubus demon poses as a math teacher in Kaylee's school and seduces and rapes teenage girls in order to impregnate them with his demon sperm. Kaylee ends up killing him, but at the cost of her own life. Sadly, she doesn't fully die, just carries on as a sort of ghost, like Tod.
- Nash's ex girlfriend Sabine, who is literally a nightmare (she's a mara, who feeds on people's dreams) shows up and is all pissy and dramatic, plus continuously bullies Kaylee and makes her feel insecure because she hasn't had sex with Nash yet. Kaylee is sixteen and hasn't been dating Nash that long and Sabine is a dick to bully her about it. Honestly? Not a good message to push to young readers.
- As I said, Kaylee ends up actually dying, and also is stuck in a love triangle between Nash and Tod, aka the Stupid Name Brothers. She chooses Tod which breaks Nash's heart uwu. Then Kaylee starts working as a sort of Reaper ghost person but decides to pretend she's still alive for some reason.
- Kaylee has a terrible best friend called Emma who shows up occasionally to say weird things. She has no other purpose. At one point she dies. Yay.
- Kaylee loses her virginity to Tod in the second last book and it's oh so beautiful and rainbows and sparkles appear. Nash gets pissy because of course he owns his ex girlfriend's body.
- Speaking of, Nash spend pretty much the entire penultimate book being moody and dramatic because Kaylee dumped him for his brother. Six words: Get. Over. It. And. Grow. Up.
- Parents? Lmao what are they, none of the kids in this story have them. Nash and Tod have a mother who shows up maybe once a book. Kaylee's dad sometimes tries to be a real person but decides to give up halfway through and disappear. Sabine evidentially doesn't even have a family at all, because she spends her time going places at god awful hours of the night and randomly popping into people's houses.
- Sabine is also obsessed with Nash and getting him back. That's just basically her entire character right there.
- Kaylee has a basic boring cousin called Sophie who hates her being all supernatury.
This book series is so weird and basic I'm not sure how I ever enjoyed it. Plus, it doen't seem that well known. Anyone I ever ask has never heard of it. Have you ever read this series? What did you think of it?
