If I was asked to describe this book, I would probably use the words "unexpectedly good."

It is fair to say that I am not a fan of Emma Donoghue. Her books usually are so full of unnecessary information, weirdly detailed sex scenes and unlikable characters that I tend to avoid them. However, the premise of The Wonder - historical fiction where our protagonist, an English nurse, is sent to rural Ireland to tend to a "miracle" girl who refuses to eat - intrigued me. And I was pleasantly surprised.

There are no weird sex scenes in this book, no random info, and I found myself warming to our main character, English nurse Lib. I especially loved the relationship that develops between Lib and Anna, and the ending caught me off guard, but in a good way.

I recommend The Wonder wholeheartedly, and give it a solid 4/5.
