THE CHEMIST [part two]
So I've skipped about fifty boring pages and it doesn't seem to have done much for the plot. Daniel and Alex kiss and then Kevin rings Daniel asking about some guy.
For some reason he's now calling Alex "Oleander."
Daniel and Alex keep kissing. There's nothing else. I swear to God, I've just read three pages of them kissing and Daniel talking about how attracted he is to her. He literally says "attracted."
Then he says he's in love with her and he wants to know if she feels the same way. She says she can't answer that until they're sure they'll survive the next twenty four hours. Idek what's going on. It doesn't even make sense.
She makes a new email account and tells this Deavers guy enough is enough.
She goes to sleep, wakes up and has a shower, then goes back to bed beside Daniel.
Right. This thing was fucking bothering me during Twilight, too. Bella always went to bed with wet hair, just after a shower. That's incredibly fucking uncomfortable, especially when you have thick hair. You can feel it dripping down your back and it makes a horrible damp mark on the pillow. When you wake up in the morning your hair is even more of a tangled mess. I don't get why Stephenie Meyer keeps using this.
They have sex and then he tells her he loves her.
Kevin rings again.
I'm so bored. Sooner or later I'm going to go insane. Daniel tells her how his ex wife cheated on him.
Of course Alex is a virgin with no past experience in romance. Same as Melanie, Wanderer and Bella.
Something struck me last night, though, after I finished writing the last part of this chapter. Daniel and Alex are like the extreme opposites to Stephenie Meyer's other characters. Well, I mean there are some bits, like Alex being a virgin and all.
But if you think about it, it's like she saw the criticism she got for the Twilight series and The Host, and completely flipped the characters on their head in response.
So usually, guys are violent and creepy?
This time it's mainly Alex who fills those requirements.
The girls are weak and can't do anything except cook? This time that character is Daniel. She just goes over the top describing it. Daniel literally seems to like nothing else but cooking. It's like she's yelling, "SEE, I'M NOT SEXIST, THIS GUY IS USELESS TOO!!"
Even Kevin seems to have gotten this treatment. When I started the book I was almost sure there was going to be a love triangle, because there always is in her work. The first maybe ninety pages were just like the usual Stephenie. When Kevin dropped in, I was ninety nine percent certain that it was going to be between the twins.
But no. It's like she intended for that, but at some point was reading reviews of The Host and thought, no, I will prove that I can do other things.
Well, kudos for the effort, Stephenie, but it doesn't really work.
It's as though by deciding she didn't want Kevin to be in a love triangle she decided that that took away all of his potential as a character and just sent him away somewhere that's not specified.
They go off somewhere to meet Kevin, who brings them to probably the most interesting character in the book, which isn't really saying a lot. She's called Val, she's really hot in that way book characters are, and the only thing she's wearing is a short black kimono and she owns a massive house. For some reason Alex presumes she's a hooker. She says Daniel and Kevin can stay but not Alex.
"You know I don't like women in my space," she said in a flat voice, flicking her eyes to Alex, then back to Kevin.
"Oh that's okay, Ollie's not a real girl," Kevin assured her.
Ok? For some reason identifying as a girl and having a vagina and boobs isn't enough to make you a real girl?
Daniel takes a step towards Kevin to defend her but Alex stops him. Val quizzes Alex about torturing and shit. She keeps watching Daniel and Alex is getting jealous.
I'm maybe fifty pages from the end now and they've just kidnapped the government boss guy's granddaughter. I'm really considering giving up here. I don't think anyone gives a shit about the plot anyway, but I am seriously losing the will to live. I've nearly been reading this for a week. Do you know how long that is for me? I finished The Host, which has maybe fifty to a hundred more pages, in three days. THIS FUCKING BOOK IS SO BORING. I feel like at this stage she's not even trying to make it interesting because she knows Twihard fucks will buy anything she writes.
How she could have made it better
1: By not writing the book at all. Like The Host, it breaks no new ground, and it's so fucking boring.
2: Actually figured out what she wanted Alex's job to be because I don't think even she knows.
3: Researched about secret agents and shit because it's so cliche that it's like somebody who didn't even understand spy thrillers sat down and wrote a spy thriller. Oh wait, that's what happened with literally all of her books.
4: Given Alex a personality apart from secret agent.
5: Given Daniel a personality apart from delicate chef who can't fight and who's also the love interest.
6: Given Kevin a personality apart from more aggressive secret agent.
7: Given Val a personality apart from beautiful and bitchy girly girl who likes make up.
8: Come up with a better name for the fucking dog rather than stealing it from Back To The Future.
I'm so fucking done with this book and this woman in general.
