ROOM {no spoilers}
Well, it seems I misjudged Emma Donoghue.
I read this book a couple of years ago and didn't think much of it. I'm not sure why. Maybe I was too immature to properly appreciate it, maybe it was because it was an e-book, maybe it was a whole lot of things. But upon re reading it recently, I was pretty much shocked by how much emotion is packed into this book.
Room is about five year old Jack and his Ma, who live in the confines of an eleven foot by eleven foot shed, which they refer to as "Room." Jack has never been Outside - as far as he knows, Room is all that exists and the things he sees on TV, such as trees, clouds, ice cream and the ocean, aren't real. In the first part of the book, the only characters we meet are Jack, Ma, and a man they call "Old Nick," who visits at night when Jack is asleep and leaves food and supplies.
The story is told through Jack's innocent eyes, but the reader quickly realises the true horror of Room, and it packs an emotional punch.
I loved this book, and I strongly urge you all to not only read it but watch the movie too. Both sent me to tears.
I give this book 5/5.
