BLAZING A TRAIL [no spoilers]
I put no spoilers in the title, though this book isn't fiction.
"Dress suitably in short skirts and strong boots, leave your jewels in the bank and buy a revolver."
"I have acted, punched, swash-buckled and shot my way through an absurdly masculine profession .... I made my mark on my own terms."
"I have too much to do to be afraid."
"We cannot live by bread alone, and it is a poor heart that never rejoices in art."
This book is the stories of 28 Irish women who each changed the world in some way - from fearless pirate queen Gráinne Mhaol to 19th century surgeon James Barry - who was really a woman named Margaret Bulkley.
This book is a beautifully illustrated warm, witty tribute to 28 wonderful Irish women who each made their own mark on history, through art, politics, sport, the suffragette movement, medicine and many more.
I adore this book. It's beautiful, and I'm going to buy it properly as soon as I can. I would recommend it to absolutely everyone, but especially people who want to see just how much of a difference women have made in history. It's astounding what women have achieved even during their oppression.
I would give this book 5 stars out of 5.
