I expected this book to be bad.  What I didn't expect it to be, however, was boring.

13 Reasons Why is a book about a teenage boy named Clay, who listens to 13 tapes his friend Hannah Baker recorded before she committed suicide. Each tape is made for a different person, with the ultimate theme supposed to be that these people all pushed Hannah towards suicide.

THE BASIC PROBLEM

"If you're listening to these tapes you're one of the reasons why,"

The entire concept of this book is so fucked. Blaming other people for your suicide is so incredibly selfish and callous.

It's almost as though Hannah committed suicide for the sole purpose of revenge rather than because of actual depression, which is incredibly insulting to actual suicide survivors.

The author can go on and on all he likes about "starting a conversation" about suicide in teens but the basic fact is that Hannah was an awful person who seemingly killed herself just so she could ruin other people's lives.

The things the others did, with the exception of the rapist, were all just  very basic.

#1) Alex said Hannah had the best ass in school

#2) Courtney ignored her a couple of times

#3) Tyler was a peeping tom

#4) Marcus felt her up

#5) Jessica stopped being friends with her

#6) Justin broke up with her

These things are all shitty behaviour, but to blame them for her suicide?

THE OTHER CHARACTERS

None of the characters have any depth or any personality. The main character is Clay, and all he is is Hannah Worshiper no#1 who just goes on and on about how beautiful she was and how much he was in love with her.

Clay is a stupid name for a kid tbh. My aunt used to have a dog called Clay. Not relevant but where my mind wandered during this dull book.

HANNAH

Hannah just goes on. And on and on and on. At some points I skipped entire pages of her boring rambling. She is exceptionally whiny and annoying and ultimately unlikeable.

At one point she abandons Courtney at a party she was supposed to be giving her a lift home from. Hannah is supposed to be the victim in this situation.

Instead she comes across as what she ultimately is - an absolute arsehole.
