Review:
Everything, Everything is a story about eighteen year old Madeline, who has severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Due to her condition, she has to stay inside of her home in Los Angeles, where she lives with her mother. A single breath of the outside air could be fatal for Madeline. Her companions consist of only her mother, who is a physician, and her nurse Carla who takes care of her all day, everyday. Madeline fills her time with watching movies, studying and most of all, reading. Until a distraction over the road takes her mind away from it all. When Olly and his family move into the house across the road from Madeline, she can't help but watch them, studying their habits and ways of life.
I think Madeline is a very well developed character and over the course of the story I really felt as though I got to understand her, and her ways of thinking. She is quite a typical teenager, enjoying movies and reading and wanting to spy on boys instead of doing her school work. I think many readers will be able to relate to her, in different ways. Olly, is really funny, and caring. He doesn't have things easy at home, yet he doesn't let that get in the way of what he strives to do. I like his determination and loyalty towards helping Madeline. I also really liked Carla, I felt really disheartened when she left Madeline. Not only did Madeline need her physically to care for her, but I think she depended on her mentally too, they seemed to have a very strong bond having spent so much time together.
I absolutely loved reading Everything, Everything. I finished it in a matter of hours, reading the full book at once, which is really not like me. I think what made it really stand out from other books, was the illustrations which filled many pages of the books, pictures of Madeline's thoughts and dreams, emails and notes. It made it really fun to read, making it a lighter read with the text being broken up. Overall, I cannot fault the story, I loved every moment of it. I think the ending was very well fitting, and it came as a surprise. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who enjoys reading young adult fiction.
