Chapter three

The above song, Her Last Words, is the theme to this book.

Zoey woke up in flashes, each one bringing a swift wave of pain, only to fall back asleep, to the internal darkness. Each time Zoey woke up, she could hear her mother crying on loop, a never-ending cycle that brought pain to her heart, knowing that she was the cause of her pain. Zoey let tears fall, unable to do much else, so great was the pain. 'Mommy,' Zoey thought, whimpering as the whitewashed walls lured her again to a deep sleep.

A darkness swirled around in Zoey's mind, one that made her scream in fear. "Someone, help!" Zoey cried, tears falling as a stabbing pain went through her arm, making her scream yet again.

Zoey woke up soon, gasping, tears streaming out of her eyes as the mind-bending pain went through her small body. "Doctor!" Zoey just heard a voice cry; she managed to see through the tears that it was her mom. "Mommy," Zoey whimpered, her eyes falling shut once more, falling

Falling

     Falling

            Falling

                   Falling

                              Falling

                                                          Falling

                                                                                    Falling

Zoey bolted up, screaming, only able to calm down when she lost all her breath; the only other sound was the heart monitor, beeping rapidly as it kept track of her racing heart. Zoey gasped for air, looking around rapidly, fear making her body shake. She was alone... but not. "So, the princess finally awakens..." a deep voice smirked, a shadowy figure looming in the corner. "G-go away!" Zoey stuttered, fear clear in her voice; the figure laughed. "Not till you do," the voice replied, changing to that of her mothers, making Zoey sob. "I-I can't; I am hurt," Zoey replied, shaking her head. "Oh dear, and who is it that did that to you?" the fake Zanna-voice asked, smirking. "YOU!" Zoey yelled, able to remember that much. "You are right; it was you," the figure said, its voice now back to its normal tone.

Before Zoey could respond to it, a flash hit her, one of a memory; she could see herself getting up from the bed, walking like she was in a trance to the kitchen before drawing one of the few knives they had, letting out a tear as she felt the kiss of the steel blade, looking down at her arms before she broke down altogether.

Suddenly, the room was filled with light, Zanna rushing to her daughter's side, holding her as she cried. "M-mommy," Zoey sobbed into her mother's chest; she had not called her Zanna mommy since she was six. Zoey was unable to hold back her tears as she felt a crushing guilt, knowing that she was the cause to her mothers stress for the past couple of days. "Shush, dear. You are going to be okay. You are going to be okay," Zanna whispered a slight tremor in her voice. "I- I am so sorry," Zoey said, holding her mother close. "Shush; you did nothing wrong," Zanna replied, looking at down at Zoey with a desperate love in her eyes. "No, I did; I did THIS to myself! How can you say that?!" Zoey yelled, snapping away from her mom with a loud voice that was not like her, a tone of betrayal underlying it. "Z-Zoey," Zanna whispered, reaching for her daughter, but Zoey just held herself away, shaking her head, sobbing. "N-no, mom. I can't... feel anything!" Zoey yelled, her eyes at last opening to reveal her eyes glowing a dark blue, one filled with depression and inner turmoil. "GO!" Zoey yelled, her mother looking heart broken before she ran out the room, crying loudly.

Zoey froze for a while before looking up slowly; a mirror was held at just the right angle, one that she knew her mother must have bought for her. Zoey started to sob harder when she saw the shadowy figure sitting on her bed, smiling at her before vanishing.
