Hanging On

Hanging On

"I've never seen

a little girl like her daddy

           so much"

He never forgot.

Hung onto these words,

A smile

     or a sneer

On his face

     every time he reminded me.

That was years ago

Somehow the fact that

It has never been said,

And never will be said again

Doesn't affect him.

It doesn't bring him shame

To cling onto one statement

About the naive love

Of a child.
