Change

Older!Hiccup x Older!Insecure!Reader

You walked away from what you could've thought as the worst conversation to walked into. You rubbed your eyes to avoid any fallen tears. Your lip quivered as your thoughts were filled with nothing but your boyfriend's words.

"There's something that needs to change about her."

You choked a sob in, not wanting anyone hearing you but unfortunately, a woman from the village saw you. You were well known among the village because of the dragon riders you were apart of, so you weren't surprised when someone saw.

"[Name], what's wrong?" she reached out but you turned away and ran.

You ran home catching eyes of the villagers. You covered your face, knowing tears were already streaming down your face. You got to your home being greeted by your worried mother when she saw you crying.

"[Name], what's wrong?" she asked kindly. She began hugging you and rubbing your back as you collapsed to the floor.

"He-," you choked out, "he said he wants me to change."

"Who wants you to change, [Name]?" she cooed.

"Hiccup," you choked out harder.

"Sweetie," she pulled in tighter, "I'm sure he didn't say that."

For the rest of the day, you stayed home teary eyed while your mother treated you.

~.~.~

For the past few days, you avoided Hiccup and anything that had to do with him. You didn't avoid the group. They noticed you were avoiding any interacting with Hiccup. You didn't go on any missions with them unless it was a severe case and you didn't bother to ask if they needed help. They were understandable to not ask what was going on.

Hiccup...well, not so much.

When you were about to leave from the Great Hall early knowing Hiccup would be there soon, you bumped into someone, someone who you were planning to avoid.

"Ah, uh, sorry, Hiccup, I didn't see where I was going, I'll see you around," you didn't look him in the eye. You tried to run away before he said anything, but his grip on your arm said otherwise. You tried to slip away but his grip tightened.

He gently pulled you to his chest but that didn't stop the small bump and small squeaking noise you made. He wrapped his arms around your waist with your arms trapped. He leaned down with his breath on your ear. "You've been avoiding me."

You didn't say anything. You didn't look him in the eye when he pulled away but he still held you. You squirmed in his grasp trying to get loose but his arms held you tight. You could feel his muscles contrast to hold you. You were getting tired and you could tell Hiccup was getting slightly irritated. You started hitting your fists on his chest. "Let me go."

You felt his hands on your waist suddenly and you went airborne. Your view went from Hiccup's chest to his backside. You figured he was carrying you over his shoulder. "Let me go," you repeated, yelling behind your shoulder.

He brought you outside and didn't put you down until he got to the side of the building. He pinned you by blocking the only exit with slamming his hand near your head. He towered over you with a frown. You simply looked the other way.

"[Name], look at me," he demanded. His voice didn't sound intimidating at all. It sounded more desperate if anything. You still resist the urge to look at him.

He curled his finger around your chin to guide it but  you pulled away. Instead he held one side of your face and his other hand joined when your were facing his direction. You felt his thumbs caress your cheekbones.

"Why have you been avoiding me?" He asked gently.

Your breath was taken away when you saw his eyes was glazed over and seemed a bit puffy red. In his eyes, you saw the green tint was screaming sadness, desperation, rejection, and lonesome. He had been crying for you this entire time.

One look into his emotions and you broke down. Your knees became weak but Hiccup held you up with the help of the wall behind you. He wrapped his arms around you once more with one arm holding your waist and the other with a hand combing your hair. He whispered sweet nothings while you cried into his chest. After a while of crying, you calmed down, only a little.

"What did I do wrong?" you choked.

You felt him shift a little, trying to pull you away to look at you. "You're the one who's been avoiding me. Shouldn't I be the one to be asking that?"

You shook your head. "You said you wanted me to change," you sniffed, "you said there's something about me that needs changing."

Hiccup furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "Changing? I didn't say any--" then he stopped. His eyes widened as his eyebrows were raised. "Oh..." His hand that was in your hair suddenly went to rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, still holding onto you. You looked up in confusion as you saw a red hue taking on his freckled cheeks. "You heard that..."

Your sight went downwards when you heard your beliefs was confirmed. "Well, tell me then that needs changing. Let me guess; my hair, my looks, maybe my body." With each word, you wanted to wail more. You couldn't take the pain anymore.

"Your name."

You stopped your mental pity party when you heard him speak. "I'm sorry," you asked.

He cleared his throat. "Your name; I want to change your name."

"Hiccup, I'm stuck with my name for the rest of my life." You deadpanned. "I'm sorry you don't like it, but--"

"No, not your first name!" By this time, he let you go and started messing with his hair. As trying to get his simple point across.

His point was not simple.

"Well then, the only thing I can think of changing my name would be my last but that would mean I would have to get--" you stopped when you realized what he was trying to get across. You looked back up to him when you felt his hand entangle with yours. You found his other hand still rubbing his neck but a melt-on-the-spot worthy smile was adoring his features. "You mean, you want to..."

"Marry you, yes," his hand hand came down to meet your cheek again as his hand held yours tighter. "The conversation you heard was Astrid and I talking about my proposal plans to you. We sort of got sidetracked when Snotlout heard and started commenting about 'women start changing after marriage' and such like he knew what marriage was of course." He rolled his eyes as he mocked his cousin. "I sort of went off at him saying you didn't need changing because you were perfect." Both of  you smiled lovingly at each other. "When he left, I thought too myself, 'maybe, there's something that needs to change about her.' I promise you I only meant it for the name."

"Oh, gods," you covered your face, wanted to cry again, "it was all a misunderstanding this entire time."

"Hey, hey, don't cry," he cooed while touching his forehead with yours after taking your hands away, "it was an honest mistake. It happens."

"I'm sorry, Hiccup," you were cut short when Hiccup had enough of sorrow from your lips. Instead, he kissed you, missing how you felt against him, in his arms. You sighed in bliss, missing his loving touch. He pinned the hand he was holding next to your head with his fingers still intertwined in yours. His free hand lingering on your waist. He pulled away with his lids heavy staring into you. You tried catching your breath before he dove for another, but all too soon he let go. He went from your lips to your ear.

"There might be another thing I want to change," he whispered the rest in your ear.

You squeaked and blushed hearing what he said. He only chuckled and brought you closer as he saw you trying to get away.

"When you're ready, of course," he whispered again.

"Hiccup!"
