"Isn't this amazing?" She exclaimed, placing a well balanced step enthusiastically on a rock. She gestured grandly at the spread of mountain ranges dusted with snow.
I shrugged my backpack off my aching shoulders, getting a good look at the lush green valleys dotted among the mountains around me as I soak up the calming bubbling of the river. Sparkling shimmer of scales caught my eyes as I stooped down to observe the rainbow trouts flicking their tails lazily in the water.
Leandra was always dragging me to explore the wild, and this time was no different. The only difference this time round was, there wasn't a guide to bring us around. Which I protested. A lot. Yet somehow, she managed to convince me to join her on this expedition. I could have been at home, snuggled in my blankets, sipping a nice cup of tea, accompanied with a fascinating book on physics.
The view was breathtaking, but I would never admit that to Lee. I simply grunted at her question, not wanting to give her the satisfaction that I enjoyed the view. Her ego was already big enough.
"Who knows? This could be an adventure, Alice." Her lips twitched mischievously into a smile, "Legend said that the first few apple trees grew here." She paused dramatically, eyes twinkling, "You like apples, don't you?"
I narrowed my eyes at her, nodding grudgingly as I scowled. She's exploiting my admiration for Isaac Newton again! Curse my obsessed soul! Ever since I learned about Isaac Newton and his discovery of gravity, I fell in love with all things physics and...well you guessed it, apples. How could you not? Such a small object that changed the world. It's impressive. This was how easily Lee convinced me to travel all the way to Southern Kazakhstan: apples.
Ignoring my death glare, she dug out a worn out map, squealing, "Let's go to Almaty!" She jabbed her finger excitedly at a city near mountains. "It's through this forest" she pointed blindly towards North, "...um that way!" I peered at the map over her shoulder, "Don't you mean South?"
Lee whacked my nose with the map, earning a sharp whine from me. "Am I ever wrong?"
"Ye-No!" I replied hurriedly, eyeing the rolled up map cautiously.
"Let's go then! We might even make it for the Zelyony Bazaar!" Lee hefted her backpack, "We're going on an adventure!" She hollered to the trees, diving into the thick forest. "Last one there is a rotten apple!"
I couldn't help but chuckle at the LOTR reference, her excitement was infectious. Lee was long gone by the time I managed to balance my backpack on my shoulders. "Wait up!"
"Lee! Leandra!" I called out. It's been ten minutes of hiking into the forest and I've already lost track of Lee. "Lee! Where are you?"
A flash of red caught my eyes. Lee's shirt! "Not funny Lee!" I warned, jogging after the streak of red, sweat dripping profusely down my face. I blinked rapidly, the salty drops invading my eyes. "When I catch you, I swear I will-"
I pushed through a patch of overgrown bushes and the sight before me stopped me dead in my tracks. Oak trees as old as time and as tall as skyscrapers stood regally beside each other. Branches peppered with glistening emerald moss stretched out, curving elegantly towards the sky. Rays of sunlight danced through the little gaps that broad green leaves could not cover. Multi-coloured birds flew gracefully overhead, calling out to the sky gleefully. I craned my neck to try get a glimpse of the constant drumming of beak against bark from a woodpecker. There was a gentle humming, as if the forest was alive. It felt so surreal, like a page out of a fairytale book.
I whipped my head around as I'm suddenly struck with a sweet fragrance that caught me off guard. I would recognise that smell anywhere. Trudging deeper into the clearing, I followed the familiar and intoxicating scent blindly.
I wasn't disappointed.
In front of me stood the most magnificent apple tree, with perfectly shaped rosy apples hung tantalisingly out of reach on sturdy branches littered with jagged-shaped leaves that flashes a dark shade of green in the sunlight. It looked both dangerous and delicious. I whistled appreciatively, stepping closer to examine the tree, basking contentedly in it's enticing scent.
"ALICE?"
My head snapped to the direction of Lee's voice. I scrambled to reach her, failing to notice a root in my pathway.
The next thing I knew, my face high-fived another nearby root, the air crushed out of my lungs. I grunted in pain, trying my best not to breathe too hard, for fear of inhaling in dirt and god knows what bugs. Mustering what little strength I left, I forced myself to sit up, rubbing my bruised face tenderly. If Lee saw that, I would never hear the end of it. At times like this, I hate gravity.
I hate apples. A thick British accent grumbled in my head.
My eyes widened. That voice...
"Issac Newton?!"
A/N: This is a short writing of a prompt, not my best work but heh, I tried. Did you know the Apple is known as the forbidden fruit?
Also, Almaty's old name Alma-Ata means "father of apples" in Kazakh, which is super cool
