So for this kind of math questions,you have to find X and Y.

For this we are gonna use substitution method even if I can use two other ones. :/

You first label your first two given equations as 1 and 2 so you won't get mixed up in the later part of steps.

In order to use the substitution method,you need to have to make the subject from an equation.

That is why I used equation 2: 3x=-6-8y to find one X which is  X=-6-8y/3

To make one letter the subject,you have to throw the other numbers,or letters over the equal sign.

You than label your new equation as 3.

Afterwards you sub it into another equation. Do note that you cannot sub it into an equation you made it from.

So you sub equation 3 into 1 which would give you.

-2(-6-8y/3)-5y=3

With this new equation,do you notice that there is no more X?

As such,with the equation above,you solve it to get Y

The next step is to expand and solve which should end up with Y=-3

And since you found Y,you can go back to find X.

The last thing to do is sub Y=-3 into equation 2

Which would give you 3x+8(-3)=-6

Next you just expand and solve to give you X

Therefore,you have the final answer of X=6,Y=-3

To check just sub the numbers into the equations to see if they give you the number at the beginning.

And that's how you find two unknowns using the substitution method
