Chapter five

I woke up the following morning with my head on Josh's chest, his heart beating peacefully, telling me that he was still asleep. I could not help but smile as I sleepily snuggled closer to him, wrapping my arm around him possessively, closing my eyes again as I drifted back to sleep, his body nice and warm. What woke me up the second time was a light stroking on my head, Josh rubbing the fur between my ears. "Did I wake you up?" Josh asked me as I yawned widely. "Nah; I had woken up before, but your heart lured me back to sleep," I responded in a murmur; I heard Josh sigh in relief. "Alright. What do you want for breakfast? I have eggs, bacon and pancake mix in the fridge," Josh said, listing off what he had. "Sounds perfect to me; do you want me to help you cook?" I asked him as I shifted, letting Josh get out of his bed, his fur ruffled from sleep. "Nah, I got it. You go ahead and get ready for the day, okay love?" Josh asked me, giving me a peck on the cheek before leaving the room, leaving me blushing.

I went to my room and got dressed as ideas of what Josh meant went through my mind, a small smile creeping up on my face at each one. Putting on a sweater and jeans, I put on a pair of socks on before going to see what Josh was making. The scent of eggs with bacon filled the air, drawing me to the kitchen to see Josh scrambling the eggs and flipping the bacon with a grace that I wish I had; I can cook, but I can only do at most two things at a time, but definitely not with one paw per pan. I took a seat at the countertop as Josh flipped a pair of pancakes, the cooked side a golden brown as he worked on the eggs.

I could not help but smile as I watched Josh cook, my boyfriend moving the food along like it was nothing. Soon, a plate was set before me of four perfect pancakes, two egg-selent eggs and four strips of beautiful bacon, the strips cooked wonderfully. "Bon appétit, amour," Josh said, his French lessons kicking in. I smiled at him as I picked up my fork, taking a bite of the eggs first. "Wow," I said, my usual response when I take a bite; I don't know how he does it, but he can make eggs do wonders on my taste buds, sending ripples of flavors all over my tongue. Josh just smiled at me as he started to eat as well, though he did get up to put a glass of Oran berry juice in front of us, one for the both of us. "Thanks," I said, Josh, nodding in response as he smiled.

"I could not help but notice that you wanted me to get ready for the day; do you have plans for us?" I asked, silently remembering that I had the day off today unless I was called in, which I hoped would not happen. "Yes..." Josh replied, smirking at me as I asked what were his plans. "Sorry love, I can not say; it would ruin the surprise," Josh responded, getting me to pout. My love laughed slightly as we continued our meal, the rest spent with idle chit-chat. I offered to wash the dishes as we finished, telling Josh to go get dressed. "'Can't wait to see what you have planned," I told him with a small smile, giving him a peck on the cheek before starting on the dishes.

Josh walked out of his room a few minutes later, decked out in a pair of jeans and a thick sweater, surprising me. "You feeling alright? I thought the cold did not bother you, Elsa," I said cracking a joke at one of Josh's favorite movies. Josh just smirked at me as he put on a pair of winter shoes, I did the same, both of our shoes blue with white stripes. "So, where are we going first?" I asked Josh as we prepared to leave the house; I had run back to my room to put on a necklace that Josh had bought me, one of a tree of life within a circle. "Come with me and find out," Josh replied, leading me outside for me to see that it was snowing. "It's snowing!" I said excitedly, pointing out the obvious as Josh chuckled. "I know; it has been snowing all this morning. Why did you think I had the blinds closed over the windows?" Josh asked me. I gave him a look, but I knew what he meant; I loved the snow and would spend all day playing in it if I could.

Josh led me to the lightly covered car and we got in, Josh in the driver's seat and me in shot-gun. The radio turned on as we reversed out of the driveway, the song Hey Brother just starting a song that we both liked. I smiled to Josh as he started to sing lightly.

Hey, brother!

There's an endless road to rediscover.

I sang the next line, thinking of Jessica.

Hey, sister!

Know that water's sweet but blood is thicker.

We both sang the next lines together, both of us taking each other's free paw.

Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you

There is nothing in this world I wouldn't do.

The next line I knew was painful for Josh, as it brought up how his brother reacted when Josh came out of the closet.

Hey, Brother!

Do you still believe in one another?

I thought of Jessica and her boyfriend Eric, a Luxray who I had never liked, silently wondering what it was that she saw in him.

Hey, sister!

Do you still believe in love I wonder?

I knew that Josh was singing for his brother, as I was singing for my sister, who I would defend with my very soul if need be.

Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you,

There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do.

I cast a look at Josh, seeing a single tear fall down his eye.

What if I am far from home?

Oh, brother, I would hear you call!

I had to take a deep breath as I thought of the fall-out between my sister and her boyfriend, remembering that she had cried for weeks afterward.

What if I lose it all?

Oh, sister, I would help you hang on!

Both: Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you,

There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do.

I knew of Josh's hard relationship with his brother, Zack, thinking of him as a complete stranger, nowhere near being his brother.

Hey, brother!

There's an endless road to rediscover!

I could tell that Josh was thinking of what his brother had said to him; I could remember how I had rushed to his side, a bloody cut on his arm. Josh had sobbed hysterically into my chest while I yelled at Zack, telling him to rot in hell before I took Josh to the hospital to get him patched up; he had to get stitches because of it.

Hey, sister!

Do you still believe in love I wonder?

I had to close my eyes to prevent my tears from falling down, hoping, praying that my sister would find love soon; I did not want her to live alone for the rest of her life.

Both: Oh, If the sky comes falling down, for you,

There is nothing in this world I wouldn't do.

I felt Josh's grip tighten during the last stanza; I held it tightly in my paw, giving silent reassurance.

What if I am far from home?

Oh, brother, I would hear you call!

I knew that Josh would fight for his brother, give his life for him even.

What if I lose it all?

Oh, sister, I would help you hang on!

I remembered all the talks I had with my sister, having to give comfort to her on the day's our parents were too busy to do so; I had no doubt she was on the verge of suicide. She didn't know that I saw the sleep pills in her dresser and that I had taken them from her.

Both: Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you,

There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do!

The radio drifted off to silence for a few seconds before the host came back on. "To Zack's brother Josh, I hope you heard this number. Your brother wanted to say that he was sorry for all he had done to you," Star said before the next song started; I looked at Josh to see that he was smiling with happy tears in his eyes, his paw on the steering wheel shaking slightly. I leaned over and gave him a kiss. "Everything is fine, don't worry," I said, giving him a smile to help him feel better. Josh gave me a smile back, squeezing my paw harder for a split second before releasing my paw.

"And here we are, the first stop of many," Josh said, putting the car in park as I looked out the window on my side.

Alright, Chapter five is done, but I do have a question to anyone who is reading this; what would be a good first stop for a date out on the town? Any suggestion would be welcome.
