Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young prince lived in a shining castle. He was known by all as a kind, just prince, raised by his loving family, and was beloved by all. But unbeknownst to all, the prince was sad and lonely.

Then, one fateful night, an old beggar woman came to the castle, and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. From the kindness of his heart, the prince allowed her inside, offering her comfort as she stayed for the night. However, the old woman wanted so much more from him, things he could not give.

And when he refused to give her what he had, the old beggar woman's face melted away to reveal a beautiful and evil demon. Horrified, the prince tried to protect his family and servants, but it was too late, for the demon had blocked any and all exits. As punishment, she transformed the prince into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there.

Repulsed by his monstrous form, the betrayed and heartbroken beast concealed himself in his castle with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his twenty-first year. If he could learn to love another, and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.

As the years passed, he fell into despair, and lost all hope. For who could ever learn to love a Beast?
