Book Scares

Guys, Fictional deaths are a terrible thing.
But you know something almost as worse?
Killing a character and then bringing them back.

Am I ungrateful? Possibly. But It's completely cruel on an author's part to terrify us by getting characters, killing them, and bringing them back.

Let's go through a scenario-
Me: *reads*
Favorite character: *dies*
Me: what???
Me: no
Me: no
Me: no
Me: *sobs*
Me: *throws book against wall* (I'd never do this but I've been tempted)
Me: *curls into ball*
Me: *cries even more*
Me: *dies*

^ see that's probably how it's like for most of us with fictional character deaths, especially the most dear to us. Then all of the sudden the character is alive again in some miraculous way!

I love that the character is back, y'know? But still, it's a mean thing for authors to do.

They anticipate tears and sadness and pain, they probably enjoy it. They want us to fall in love with their characters, and it works! Every time.

But we can't help it. So we leave ourselves vulnerable.
Instead of killing characters completely, what do authors do?

Hmm, I wonder what the reaction would be if I kill so and so, then bring them back so I don't receive too much hate?

I'm not saying it's like this in all situations-- because sometimes it's crucial to the plot.

But most of the time it's for drama.

And authors, I'm getting really upset with it.

I spend so much time crying and sobbing over characters only for you to redeem yourselves at the very last second?

I don't want you guys to put me through scares. There's almost nothing more painful for me. Except for real fictional deaths when they don't come back.

Still, why freak out your audience? Is there a purpose, are you guys becoming lazy and fake killing someone so that it adds extra pages?

It's not right at all.

I'm always eternally happy when I get a character whom I adore back-- who doesn't feel happy when that happens?

But I've been thinking about it for some time and realized that there's been a pattern of Scare the fangirl audience!

I'm upset, Writers. If it doesn't add to the plot, don't add it. Stop making us cry hysterically and scream our hatred only to bring them back so you don't get too much hatred.

Does this make any sense or am I being stupid?

Do any of you agree or are you like 'nope CBG, stop your complaining'.

And again for clarification, I'm not complaining about keeping characters alive. I'd never do that. I'm just getting tired of sobbing and realizing later that going to such crying extremes (like crying so hard I threw up, which happened) was unnecessary.

And I think that crying during books is good, if I cry during a book that means it touched me so much that I'll cry for my characters and become them. There's really only a few stories that are like that, tbh. And I consider myself so lucky to have found my favorites of all time, the ones when I connected with the characters the most.

But I just really hate when writers just kill a character because they can, then bring them back because they're bored.

I've seen it happen a lot, and I'm not liking it anymore.

Again, I'm always so happy when I get characters back, but why kill them in the first place if they're gonna live in the end???

Comment your thoughts, and whether you agree or not!

Okay byeee!
