R.I.P. Jay Briscoe (1984 - 2023)
Imagine this: you just finished dinner with your fiancée, you're doing the dishes with her, and now you're watching some TV before heading off to bed before receiving the news that Jay Briscoe, one half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions, a twenty year veteran, just passed away in an accident at 38.
I'm at a loss for words. I didn't expect this after a good day at work.
The Briscoes were one of the first teams I was introduced to when I started watching Ring of Honor and now, I didn't get behind the fact that they had confederate flag bandannas or whatever (it was because of their heritage and not for racial reasons, based on my research), but what I saw was their passion for wrestling, not just tag team wrestling, but wrestling as a whole.
I thought Jay was the cool guy while Mark was the insane one who was just trying to create heel heat however he could. There was also something about Jay that drawn me to him and how he made the gimmick look cool. I considered him my favorite over Mark because he had the charisma that I loved while watching him.
Last month, I watched ROH: Final Battle where FTR and The Briscoes had their Dog Collar Match for the ROH World Tag Team Championships and seeing them all bleed throughout the match made me feel like I was watching the old days of ROH, even though I started watching it at the end of my senior year (yes, I was a senior citizen), and I really enjoyed the work that they've done.
I might've loved what they did and there were some matches that I deeply enjoyed, but their recent Collar match with FTR was probably the best match I've ever watched, and seeing Jay bleed like a stuffed pig got me invested because I love blood in wrestling, especially when there's a hardcore match and to me, it got me hooked.
But I can't express how sad I am to hear that my favorite tag wrestler just passed and I cannot believe that he's gone.
Rest in peace, Jay. We will miss you.
