Chapter 20

Meera was sipping on her coffee whilst reminiscing her past, particularly the day Keshav rejected Meera. Had she not been silly or immature, she'd probably be happily married to Keshav today. Meera now understands what Sakshi went through after Sakshi's and Nikhil's divorce and can connect with her more deeply today. Furthermore, Meera's parents have started to pressure Meera to get married, Meera's father constantly sends her pictures of different prospective grooms, but no one tends to attract Meera. The only person Meera ever wants to be with is Keshav, although Meera never agrees with it publicly.

Sakshi will be discharged today from the psychiatric hospital and be shifted to her house with Damini, and Shreya, Sakshi's niece. Hence, Meera got herself ready, and once she looked presentable, Meera left for the hospital to help with the discharge process. Nikhil, Shradda, Damini and Aarav were already there, waiting outside Sakshi's room for the doctor to confirm Sakshi's discharge. After greeting all those who were present there Meera scanned the place, particularly in search for Keshav. Understanding who Meera was searching for Aarav said 'he couldn't come today due to work'. Meera just looked at Aarav bizarrely as if she didn't care about Keshav and his whereabouts.

Soon without delay the doctor confirmed that Sakshi can leave. Due to the fact that Sakshi can be intimidated seeing the crowd just Aarav and Meera entered Sakshi's room to get Sakshi prepared to leave. When they entered the room Aarav and Meera saw a Sakshi who was sat near the window sill observing her surrounding. Meera gently tapped on Sakshi's shoulder, quickly Sakshi looked behind her and burst into tears seeing her dearest friend. Both Sakshi and Meera hugged each other immediately and cried their heart out. Aarav watched them getting equally emotional.

After a good few minutes Meera broke her hug and gently placed her palms on Sakshi's cheeks.

"It is ok to feel weak Sakshi. It is ok to be afraid. The important thing is that we face our fears. That's... that's what make us strong. We are all with you Sakshi ... We will fight this together." Meera said and tried to comfort the poor soul.

"Meera ... I am a broken girl so lost in despondency that you know even if I find my way out of this labyrinth in hell, I will never see, feel, taste, or touch life the same again" Sakshi replied tearfully.

Hearing this Aarav interrupted the conversation "there isn't any timestamp on trauma Sakshi. There isn't a formula either that can be inserted into yourself to be healed from the horror to be healed. Be patient. Take up space. Let your journey be the balm... I know its easy said than done but look Sakshi we are will with you in this journey called life. We will all fight with you till you get justice."

Sakshi was forever grateful for all the support she was receiving from her friends but Sakshi had no more strength to fight. She was fed up of everything.

Advocate Supriya's POV

I was living in Bangalore the day they gangraped her in a way no one could fathom. I still remember the day I woke up to the news, there was fear and anger. Twelve girls from our cohort immediately left the city because there parents were terrified. I was gutted. I cried uncontrollably thinking about her; about what she went through. When more details started pouring in, something in me moved.

Very soon the whole country became aggressive. She went through a torture that we can't even imagine -- and we all felt the pain. At that point, had any of us seen the accused we would have shred them to pieces. Where we were housed there was approximately 50,000 youth in and around the area -- we decided to protest. I was at the forefront of the protest. I'd climbed the gate to tell the crowd that we needs to fight to get her treated outside the country. They sprayed water cannons on us; lathi charged us -- but we didn't sop. I attended every protest from the beginning till the end. I can't explain how I felt when we found out that Sakshi had suffered a cardiac arrest in the air ambulance on the way to Chennai for a better treatment. But eventually felt relieved when I found out that her physical health was slowly becoming stable.

After that incident, I followed the case like a hawk and attended every hearing, even though I wasn't Sakshi's counsel. My blood was boiling seeing the progress of the case, Sakshi clearly wasn't getting justice. My last straw was when a well known politician publicly stated that if Sakshi was his daughter he would have had thrown petrol over her and burned her in a channel debate. After this incident, I learned that Sakshi had once again attempted suicide, my breath only fell back to its normal pace when I learned that Sakshi had survived that agony as well.

Finally, I spoke to Sakshi and her friends Keshav, Aarav and Meera and promised them that I will fight for Sakshi and make sure she gets the justice she deserves. And just like that I took over Sakshi's case.

Sakshi's POV

Life wasn't the same. Sometimes I wonder what is the point in living like this? Why is all this happening to me?

When it started to feel as if I was regaining my life back, a random Wednesday changed my life forever. The emotional and physical pain and the public humiliation I went through can never be justified. What did I do to go through all this? Did all this happen because I betrayed my ex-husband Nikhil for my brother? There has not been one day where I haven't cried since that incident. Honestly, I feel disgusted with myself. I don't feel worthy of living at all ...  Every time I think about suicide, Aarav visits me (as if he knows I am up to something) and gives me the energy through words to fight no matter how much I beg him to forget me and concentrate on his life. Of course, I know that Aarav has feelings for me, but how can I welcome him into my life when I know that he deserves better?

Not to mention my friends Keshav and Meera have also been supportive in this difficult period, sometimes I wonder what I would have done without Aarav, Meera and Keshav in life? I haven't known Aarav, Keshav and Meera for long but today they are my three pillars of strength, without them I am a big zero. I am forever thankful and grateful to God for giving me them three in this journey of life. However, one thing that is upsetting me at the moment is whatever happened between Keshav and Meera. I just hope that they set aside their differences and become one as no one deserves to be together more than them.

Just when I closed my eyes for a nap, my silver phone vibrated and the screen flashed 'Nikhil Calling'.

"Hello, Sakshi. Hope you are not busy. Can we talk?"

"Yes sure" hesitantly I agreed

"Actually I'm outside your front door. Do you mind letting me in?"

                                                                           . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

To be continued ...

What might be Nikhils motive in visiting Sakshi?

Any opinion on Advocate Supriya?
