Ch. 1: The Worst Birthday
CHAPTER ONE
THE WORST BIRTHDAY
Lilian looked around and noticed that Hedwig was back. It had been her second summer with her Godfather, Severus Snape. She was used to the silent treatment besides the time when they would eat food together and she would bother him with thousands of questions. She had bugged him to allow Hedwig to stay with them, since the Dursley's absolutely hated her.
"Please, please!" She begged. "I won't ask you for anything else."
"Unlikely." Her Godfather said.
"But the Dursley's don't like Hedwig." She said and whispered "And Harry."
Severus Snape looked up and sighed. He was slowly giving into her, after all her Godfather did care about her. Most of the time he yells and scolds her, but she knew it was out of love.
"I won't bug you about going anywhere!" She yelled. "I'll limit my questions!"
"Fine!" He hissed and took his newspaper, the Daily Prophet and slammed his door shut. Lilian didn't bother flinching and smiled.
"I wonder how Harry's doing." She asked Hedwig, the bird gave her a look and nipped lightly at her fingers. "Not good? I wish I had an owl..."
Hedwig made an annoyed hoot and Lilian laughed. "Don't worry Hedwig, you'll always be my favorite owl."
That had been 2 months ago.
A large, jet black owl flies in and Lilian recognized him immediately. "George!" The owl lands on her shoulder and drops a letter. 2 other owls fly in. A large Eagle owl with orange eyes lands on the table and it's perched with two front toes facing forward. A Great Gray Owl flies in rather clumsily and makes into the black owl which angrily hoots and nits at him. "Errol, Abraxas."
All 4 owls drop down letters and gifts.
"Dear Lilian,
How are you? I asked Ron if I could use Errol to talk to you. He said yes. How are you, I haven't heard from Harry even though I've been writing for weeks. Are you having any luck? Yes. No. Well, Ron isn't. Happy almost birthday, I sent Harry a gift and I thought since your birthday is a day after his, it would be a good idea to send you yours as well.
Hope you like it,
Hermione."
Hermione gave Lilian a necklace with her name on it and a book from Obscurus Books called 200 facts about charms and more!
She picked up the next letter and gift.
"Hello, Love
Fred here and George. Happy Birthday, Ron and Percy are being gits. Wondering how you've been. Mum wants to know if you want to come over, we asked Harry but he didn't answer. Doesn't Hedwig go to you and then Harry? Do you know what's going on. Hey Ron what are you- Sorry about Fred and George... and Errol. Bloody bird! Happy early birthday, Heard from Harry? Mum's bugging us about inviting you, maybe you can get Snape to let you go? We haven't heard anything from Harry, we're gonna go get him
Love,
Ron, Fred and George."
There was a large bag of brownies and cookies and a handmade red dress from Mrs. Weasley, absolutely beautiful.
The next gift was from Draco Malfoy.
"Father's making me do this since we're related. Hope you're having a horrible holiday, expect me to be over your house next summer. Snape's my Godfather and we'll have to learn how to get along.
Happy Birthday,
Draco Malfoy."
Draco had given her an expensive jewelry and hair pin. Lilian humphed but shrugged, at least it was nice and not horrible.
The last letter and gift was from Daphne.
"Dear Lilian,
Hello, I'm sorry I couldn't invite you to my house. My family went on vacation, but Happy Birthday. Astoria said hello. Hope everything's going well. Sorry the letter's short Mother's shushing me. See you at Hogwarts
Sincerely,
Daphne."
Daphne had given her an expensive dress and a book about Hexes. She smiled and gave the owls food and wrote her response and watched as they flew off into the distance. Lilian knocked on her Godfather's study and noticed he didn't answer and opened the door.
Severus Snape's study was dark and had one small window that had curtains over it. There were books that traveled upward to the ceiling. Cauldrons were flying over the place with unknown substances in it. There was a small light over the large desk where her Godfather sat. Fumes where lifting up towards the ceiling and changed color.
"Um..." Lilian said, she never went into his study unless she asked for a book. "I wanted to know if I could go to the Weasley's..."
There was no answer. Her Godfather's back was facing her and she couldn't see his face.
She moved closer.
"Are you awake?" She asked and her Godfather looked sharply at her.
"I thought you 'weren't going to bug me about going anywhere'" He hissed.
"Well -- I -- I mean --" Lilian was trying to find an excuse but couldn't find one.
"Fine." He said and waved his hand. "How long are you staying?"
"How long should I stay?" She asked.
"Until they tell you to leave!" He snapped. "Get out!"
"Ok!" She squeaked and hurried out the room. She groaned and tried to ignore her awkwardness. She couldn't count how many times he yelled at her. As long as she doesn't get in trouble everything would be alright.
Lilian ran to her room and looked at the calendar. It was September 31st, Harry's Birthday and she hadn't received a letter from him. She shook her head and tried to think positively about the Dursley's but it was impossible. She looked at the time and it was half past seven in the evening. She looked over at the phone in her room, the only phone they had.
She dialed the Dursley's phone number and listened to it as it rung.
"Hello?" She asked.
"Lilian, is that you?" Harry's voice whispered. "Why haven't you been sending me letters?"
"What are you talking about?!" She yelled. "I've sent you over a dozen letters!"
"Don't yell at me!" He yelled back. "I haven't received a letter from any of you!"
"Upstairs! Harry!" Mrs. Dursley's voice yelled.
"But-"
"Now!" She snapped.
"Bye!"
"Bye!"
They hung up the phone and Lilian looked out the window. It didn't make any sense. Why didn't Harry realize they wrote letters to him?
